A GIRL AND HER GUN | Omeleto

Фильм және анимация

A tormented girl finds her late father's gun and stands up to her bullies.
A GIRL AND HER GUN is used with permission from Paul Holbrook and Sam Dawe. Learn more at paulholbrook.co.uk.
A neglected 12-year-old girl faces down her father's impending death, leaving her vulnerable to the tensions and threats in her environment. She's tormented by bullies at school who grind down any sense of value she has, and she's woefully overlooked by her guardian at home, leaving her prey to her guardian's menacing boyfriend.
The girl's only solace comes from TV, where she watches classic Westerns, which allows her to experience vicariously a sense of dominance and power. But when she finds a gun among her dad's belongings, movies and real life start to blur in possibly dangerous ways.
Directing team Paul Holbrook and Samuel Dawe's tense drama combines "kitchen sink" gritty realist British drama with the almost theatrical tensions and silence of the classic Western genre.
The combination of the styles is fascinating, but serves both the story and the main character, who develops a vivid imaginative life to find relief from the depressing financial and emotional poverty of her real life.
The story takes time to set up the unnamed girl's circumstances, but once the storytelling kicks in, it powers forward, ratcheting up the tension to an almost unbearable point. The short is anchored by a strong main performance by the young lead Matilda Randall, who seethes and suffers, often in silence. She never "indicates" emotion, beautifully underplaying the dark undertows of her grief, sadness and anger. And when they finally bubble up to the surface in the final gripping confrontation, her actions and decisions are soul-crushing, both for her and the audience.
A GIRL AND HER GUN juggles both an audacious aesthetic experiment and heart-wrenching social commentary, posing fascinating questions about the enduring pull of violence and its intersection with social disenfranchisement. The craftsmanship of the film is impeccable, with taut camerawork and excellent acting, but ultimately the main impact of the story is emotional and visceral -- and memorable for its devastation.

"Darlin' some ppl might say 'Your dad was a bit of a hero'". If ppl would listen and watch this film with some degree of concentration we would not have this ridiculous claims that the Helpers in this film were uncaring! It is important for children to be in school to get away from violence at home but when the violence in school is there too and no one speaks up including the victims of bullying than we need to change that! Whistleblowers are heroes! don't fight the helpers!

This is very accurate, when it comes to bullies in today’s schools and social services/councils. I was avoiding going to school and missing up to months of school, social services were at my door non stop threatening my parents constantly (they were not the issue, they were supportive) but the teachers, council and social services saw me as another statistic, another box to tick. The only thing they cared about was me attending school, just the percentage. Not why I wasn’t going. Social services in the UK really suck.

Lesson learned: never tell someone to kill themself weather it’s to show off in front of your friends, or anything really. Just don’t do it. Bullying is seriously a problem. A lot of people kill themselves because of bullying. In fact, most teens that DO kill themselves, is a result of bullying. If you bully someone, it’s never the right thing to do. I don’t care if it’s to impress your friends, or anything of that matter. It’s not right. And if you deal with bullying, tell someone. Trust me, it makes everything 100 times better when you just talk to someone.

When I watch something like this, it makes me want to go back in time to my youth and rescue all the bullied kids I knew growing up (including myself). It's amazing how cruel kids can be. It's as though we humans are born cruel, grow up cruel, then adopt some civility as a shallow veneer just to get along, more out of fear of punishment or retribution than because we inherently realize what the right behavior is. People today laugh and deride organized religion, forgetting that such religions arose in times of great barbarity, when men treated each other savagely and mercilessly. Religion brought about the concept of sin, and divine retribution, and the notion of treating others as you would have them treat you. Right down to the present day, though, we are still quite vicious toward each other. Yet, there is in most of us some kernel of goodness. This girl knew she was being treated unjustly, she knew her mom was bad, her mom's boyfriend was scum, the school bullies were vicious. She saw how such people were dealt with in the simple good-versus-evil scenarios of westerns, and she fantasized bringing such vengeance on her own tormenters, but in the end she could not hurt others. She simply decided to leave the world.

This really struck a nerve. I grew up with an abusive father and was bullied by both my peers and teachers (I didn’t have it as bad as her thank god). Everyday was agonizing. I came so close to hitting or punching my bullies and my father but I always held back for some reason. Years later until my diagnosis of borderline personality disorder and ADHD, I would resent myself for not fighting back. But working with a therapist for the last year and a half, I learned that not fighting back didn’t make me weak, it made me stronger. I did the right thing. With BPD comes rage that is really suppressed pain. All the years of not acting on my urges prepared me to deal with the illness that would one day show up as a consequence of surviving my childhood. Today, I am a graduate student and I will be 25 in three days. I’ve an amazing support system and appreciate each day, even the bad days.

I know depression. I'm grateful to God I got through. It stemmed from bullying and more. But the one thing I figured out. Suicide is a permanent solution to a treatable problem. PLEASE KNOW I UNDERSTAND, BUT IT DOES GET BETTER, JUST HAVE FAITH AND HOLD ON. I pray for all those tonight, who feel so alone. Whether you believe it or not...YOU ARE WORTH IT....No matter how big or small problems/issues you are chasing. I've been down that road to many times. Tired of hearing all the voices, eyes always on me. Yes I know I am different but that doesn't mean I don't feel, don't bleed. As the tears pour down my face, the only way I know to be, to hide my feelings and dreams. But one day, wind was so cool on that summer day, when I knew music was my calling, writing , my gift. Because of my family was always put down. Having a famous family and trying to do it on your own. So I kept on..But I stopped letting other people hurt me. Turned it into a melody. If you are true to yourself....that's all you need. I know it can be hard and terrifying . Feeling hopeless and so done. Tears won't ever fall for you again, and I'm standing on my own. On my own. © BMI 2018 Sally G

I’ve watched this multiple times. I relate so much to her desperate need to escape mentally from what was going on around her. This young actress portrays the devastation of Sarah’s life so poignantly without barely speaking a word. The choice she took in the end sadly makes perfect sense to me. Such a truthful short film- pulls no punches, sugarcoats nothing with a single grain of sweetness- this is reality. For too many kids.

Level 14 just please don't do it the way she did You are important and valuable ❤ when people bully you, do stand up for yourself and try to not let them push you around. Kids who bully are looking for power, but the power lies with you. ❤ i know it can be hard though, so i hope you stay strong

This brings back bad memories. I was bullied in school, all the time..and I always thought in my head, different ways to blow my bullies away. I am glad I never went through with my thoughts. Sad but very real situations in this film. Bravo to the file director and to Allen. Thank You💜🤗 PEACE.

That had me really sad from the beginninG..and teary eyed. I hope it’s a lesson not just to school bullies..,but bullies of the” world “. You just never know what someone is going through. Do you want to be that person that pushes someone over the edge? Or be the voice of reason and understanding? Some people don’t have to think too hard about that. Some people do. I feel sad bc I know this is a situation so many people go through.
