Today's gin cocktail is perfect for Valentine’s Day - the Juliet & Romeo! An original recipe created by Toby Maloney in 2007, this has been a Valentine's go-to of mine ever since. If only Romeo and Juliet could've tasted this drink before the play ended, maybe the outcome would've been less tragic. Anyway, here's to all the couples out there! Cheers!

THE JULIET & ROMEO RECIPE
2 oz. (60 ml) Beefeater London Dry Gin
3/4 oz. (22.5 ml) fresh lime juice
3/4 oz. (22.5 ml) simple syrup (1:1 sugar:water)
4 drops rose water (1 drop for garnish)
optional .25-.5 oz aquafaba (see notes below)*
3 slices of cucumber
Small pinch of salt
Sprig of mint
3 drops Angostura Bitters
Mint leaf with rose water, and bitters for garnish
*NOTES - THE FOAM IS A BIT TRICKY
Due to this cocktail not having an emulsifier, getting that foam on top seems to be a bit hit or miss. My theory is that it depends on the cucumber. To solve this issue, adding .25-.5 oz of aquafaba will help ensure a foam on top, onto which you can place your bitters.

EDIT: I've been hearing from some folks saying they aren't able to get the foam on the top. I'm thinking it's the cucumber. I recently tried it with two different cukes (of the same type) and one came out with foam and the other did not. A solution to this is to add .25-.5 oz of aquafaba and that should help emulsify things. Either way, it's gonna taste good so don't worry too much about it! Speaking of pink liqueurs and Valentine's Day, could you do something on Sloe gin? I'm in Ireland where it's kind of a thing, and while I love the flavor I think I'm doing it a disservice with my current mixing practices.
This looks great. I think this is the cocktail I’ll make for my wife and I! I feel like swirling through the dots with a cocktail pick or tooth pick to make hearts could up the Valentine’s Day factor.

This seems heavily inspired by an older cocktail, the Southside (london dry gin, lime juice, mint, simple syrup, angostura), augmented by the cucumber and rosewater. The Southside and Tom Collins are my go-to drinks for turning people on to gin.

I believe the eastside has both mint and cucumber. The southside I believe only has the mint. The difference for the J&R is that it also adds rose water, salt and bitters. I could be wrong though
@vincenth2782

Yep southside just mint, then eastside mint and cucumber. So the R&J is just a twist of the eastside

This is a wonderful and fresh cocktail. I can see myself holding one of these more or less constantly during the summer. Since I'm not a huge fan of rosewater I've started replacing it with creme de violet and with great results. You get the same flowery notes but without the rose, it works really well. As always, thank you for the great content!
Another new one for me! I can't wait to give this a try this weekend! Thank you for highlighting these lesser known cocktails!
I just started trying gin again thanks to your videos and I love this recipe. I made it for my friends today and they loved it too. Thanks for sharing this terrific gin cocktail!!
Love it! Thanks you two!! Happy Valentine's Day 💖
Another great video. And love the background stories you always share. Going home to make this tonight (love that it uses common bar ingredients).
I just tried this and an instant favorite in the house. The cucumber flavor is absolutely superb!! Hoping for more speakeasy cocktails
Made this for Valentine’s Day, the boy loved it! New favorite of ours for sure. Thank you
Oh, I'm obsessed! 😍 Very excited to try! Thank you for this!!🤗
This sounds so fresh and fragrant. I know I will love it. I hope you and Az have a great Valentine's day. 😊💘
Love the presentation of the rose water drop on the mint leaf! Can't wait to try this one
I appreciate this channel. I’ve already got all the ingredients for this drink, and can’t wait to try it!
Made this today.. It is absolutely fantastic! Thanks for this! My wife and son loved it too!
The hubs and I love your videos! Your personality shines and we always learn something valuable! Thanks!
You, sir, are psychic. Just this morning, I was thinking that I hadn't made a gin-based cocktail in a while and needed something new to try. And you delivered!
Took a Violet Hour cocktail class here in Chicago where they taught us how to make this. It’s amazing. The floral notes from the rose water, wow. Takes a bit of time but absolutely worth it.
made this for my girlfriend last valentine’s day, since then i turned 21 and i have now been bartending since june, revisiting this video as i’m going to make it for her tomorrow ! thank you for this great video anders !!!
I LOVE this cocktail. My wife and I hold Shakespeare dear; gin, mint, and cucumber are just about my three favorite flavors. I've also made her the grey fox when she's been pregnant-thanks for spreading the word about these wonderful cocktails and devising other ones!
Saw this and had to make it. I had the ingredients at home except for rose water... But I had orange blossom which I used in please of the rose. I think it worked great. The salt, sweet sour and floral notes played so well against eahc other. Loved it! Thanks Anders!

This looks delicious! I'm adding it to my list of cocktails to try.
Never heard of this one before, but let's try it. Happy Valentine's to you both!
Looks great!
Yum! Cheers!
It taste amazing ! Thanks for sharing!
This is a staple at The Patterson House in Nashville (another Toby Maloney speakeasy bar). It's a beautiful color. It's probably the most refreshing cocktail I like. I have asked for this recipe before and made it at home. I like it with Hendrick's.
Happy Valentine's Day to you two too!
Looks good. Thanks
A cocktail i will definitely will try at home! Love gin and love cucumber in cocktails so it's gonna taste great!

What a beautiful cocktail! As a Shakespeare nerd and lover of gin, I will be making this for my girlfriend and myself this weekend. Cheers!
Really reminds me of the White Linen, a summertime favorite in Sacramento CA. Gin, lemon (or lime, depending on who you ask), cucumber (and maybe mint depending on who you ask), simple syrup, and St Germain for the floral/sweet component. It's really refreshing and aromatic without being overwhelmingly floral.

I drink gin from time to time and always have a bottle or two on hand. I just made a gin cocktail yesterday using Hendrick’s, Grand Marnier, pineapple juice (Dole), passion fruit juice (Goya), and grenadine with crushed ice. It was delicious!
Oh Anders... what a great cocktail! I just replicated your recipe today and let me tell you that this is now a favourite of mine. I had a hard time in the past finding good gin cocktails, despite loving to drink gin. Rum was always my base spirit for cocktails. But this Juliet and Romeo is delicious! One to make over and over and share with many! Cheers!
Definitely gonna try this 👌🥂
tomorrow i wll start my day with this recipe tasting. Thx a lot man!
omg! I love the violet hour! what a great find
Great drink! Made it for my wife (who ironically doesn’t care for cucumber but does love gin) and she loved it! Thanks!
This looks very good. Making this weekend!
!!! This is a slight variation on my favorite cocktail: Eastern Standard, slight riff on the Eastside Rickey (no soda). Picked it up when working at Soho House, though they use bombay for the herbaceous quality. I am absolutely trying this with the rosewater and bitters, very smart with the salt too!
Sounds similar to the English Garden cocktail that has been around for a few years and uses gin, cucumber and mint. The Angostura and rosewater are new in this one, though. I'll give it a try - looks a great summer drink.
Trying this tonight! Thanks
It’s to my great detriment that I’ve never really enjoyed cucumber in cocktails… especially considering it was so commonly used in Petraske’s drinks that I’m sure heavily influenced the early VH menu. I did learn something really interesting here though. I didn’t realize VH opened just in 2007… I thought it was far more established by the time I was frequenting in ‘08 because I moved to a place down the street. Sadly haven’t been back in years (as in, maybe once since big star opened) but always have fond memories and appreciate the impact it’s had on our local cocktail culture. In fact, just finished a paper plane prior to watching this video. Cheers, keep up the excellent work.
Definitely going to make this for my super low key at home valentine's day.
I'm always down for a gin based cocktail so I'm excited to try a new one!
omg, I will try it right away
I worked at this bar over the summer. Love The Violet Hour
Can't beat Anders! Cheers.
Really love the rose water on the mint leaf. It’s like dew! Def gimlet, south side, east side adjacent. Classics are a great starting point for making new drinks. Sub this, add that. Usually ends up at least interesting and good even if you choose something that sounds odd.
@phrides

Yeah, perhaps more overlaid upon than adjacent to the Eastside, since it's just adding rosewater and salt (the latter of which I already include in my Eastside). Add the presentation, the occasion of a new bar and holiday, and it certainly deserves some local fame. I'll have to make some rosewater when the flowers bloom this spring and the mint is bursting forth to test Anders notion that it deserves it's own place as a unique cocktail beyond the immediate environ of the Violet Hour.
Anders this looks really good. Thank you.

Very nice garnish, Anders. Cheers
Very cool so pretty much an Eastside with the addition of the rosewater and bitters. Def will try. Recently made a mint collins and added some bitters on top and it really did add another dimension to the drink. Didn't think bitters and gin were a think until that.
another great video!!!!!
Worth trying. Eastside + rose water.
I made this last night and it was such a hit! A friend whose fave drink is a Southside thought this was better. Thanks for the recipe!
Definitely going to try this out tonight, interested in how the salt and rose water interact with everything else. The drink that immediately came to mind when I saw the ingredients was the Kentucky Maid (from Sam Ross who's actually from my hometown of Melbourne, Aus!). Very similar and I LOVE that cocktail. Very refreshing.
This is one of my favorites!

A cocktail full of British taste influences (cucumber & mint) with Beefeaters gin (one of the best and very underappreciated gin) that shouts summer and could have easily been invented a hundred years ago. Nice video

You can, but it's going to want to stick on the bottom of the tin - so I add the ice on top of the muddled cucumber and shake it hard to break everything up. Cheers!

A cocktail made almost exclusively from ingredients that you're likely to already have at home, that alone makes it a great recipe. And it sound delicious too, gonna try it this weekend. The only thing I'd need to go and buy is rosewater, and that basically doesnt have an expiration date so once you've bought some its on hand forever.
