As someone who has served these drinks to the tackiest of people (horse racing enthusiasts and the nouveau riche) for years now, I really appreciate this. Doubly, as someone who lives in Baltimore, I REALLY appreciate the Preakness cocktail and the Black-Eyed Susan (as awful a drink as it is and thank you for including the context of the time period being what makes the drink laughable) being included and getting their due. From what I know historically, the Preakness cocktail was the OG official cocktail of the race, before the vodka drinkers ruined everything. Thank you Anders, much appreciated!

The Preakness was awesome. It's like a manhattan meets an old fashioned, but the use of benedictine as the sweet component really brings so much dimension to the party. I also love the use of Old Grand Dad bonded here... it's my absolute favorite for old fashioneds. Although, Mellow Corn makes a mean one as well.

Funnily enough, for the Black Eyed Susan, the bourbon got somewhat lost in the cocktail even though I used 2oz of it rather than a 1:1 split with vodka. Perhaps my shaking wasn't on point, or maybe it's kind of inevitable with this kind of drinks, but I didn't predict a full 2oz of Evan Williams BIB getting overshadowed by this much. I added another 0.5oz of bourbon to the completed drink, stirred it up, and I liked it much more. Nonetheless I think it's a very accessible and refreshing drink. I'll probably try this one again with barrel proof bourbon. It's got potential.

As always amazing line up of cocktails you show us Anders. It would be awesome to create a cocktail with Blanton's Bourbon since it's cork topper has a jockey on his thoroughbred but, I understand it's a cardinal sin in the bartending world to use a higher quality spirit in a cocktail. 😅 P.S. nice lemon coil garnish at the end there always a crowd pleaser.

The Black Eyed Susan is interesting. Not a huge vodka guy, but using it as a means of adding subtlety to certain spirits is a useful application. American whiskeys are strong in both proof and character, so it's sometimes nice to tame the base spirit with something besides sugar and acid -- the same relationship as gin and vodka in the Vesper. Vodka and bourbon also sounds like an interesting and more desirable alternative to vanilla vodka.

Anders, does ZBiotics advise women to take a double dose? Women are genetically deficient in Acetaldehyde Dehydrogenase, so they are much more ravaged by excessive drinking. That aside, I live in Louisville, and at one point I lived about 200 yards from Churchill Downs. Derby Day is a Baccanal, and the Mint Julep is a large part of that. The "Preakness," on the other hand, looks and sounds delicious! Where's Az?

I had a triple sec once that was sickeningly sweet. Thought it was such a crappy addition to drinks for that reason, and made a vow to never use it in anything again. But you're saying they're supposed to be DRY?!!

Dry is relative here. Triple sec is still a liqueur, but traditionally they're less rich than curaçao. Unfortunately, quality and sweetness levels vary because there aren't strict rules for orange liqueurs.

@@AndersErickson You can say that again! When it comes to orange liqueurs, I just default to Cointreau.
