A garbage dump turned green oasis | WIDE

Welcome to Al-Azhar Park, Cairo’s Central Park, containing 30 hectares of water features and elegant pavilions. As strange as it may seem, classic oriental gardens are rare in the city of a thousand minarets.
When Al-Azhar Park was unveiled in 2005, it was a revolution for the inhabitants of Cairo, as well as a magnificent architectural feat.
It’s difficult to imagine, when immersed in the singing of the fountains and the scent of jasmine, the terrible fate that this terrain just barely escaped; by taking the place of an immense landfill containing 500 years of accumulated waste.
This garbage dump transformed into a magnificent garden gives the Egyptian capital a verdant heart that is now the most frequently visited green space in the city.
