    Funny thing about the in-game armor slayer is that in FE games that use the weight system, where a heavier weapon will slow down a unit who lacks the proper strength, the Armor Slayer is almost always the heaviest sword in the game. So the fact that this real-life equivalent is also really heavy is actually pretty cool.

    In some games, the armorslayer also has less accuracy than other swords, so it makes sense why it wouldn't be a sword characters would regularly use and why it's good against armored foes because it has the weight and the foes have the slowness

  • @matthewmuir8884

    @matthewmuir8884

    Yeah; it is very cool. I can only see one area where it doesn't translate between real life and game very well: the kind of armour it can slay. I can't see this sword doing very well against a plate-armoured knight, yet plate-armoured knights are the units that take bonus damage from this weapon.

  • @JCPRuckus

    @JCPRuckus

    4 жыл бұрын

    @@matthewmuir8884 - How so? Compared to a "normal" sword this seems much more practical against an opponent in plate, at least until you're grappling. For one, the flared spikes on end of the blade actually have a chance of directly penetrating a plate (like a war pick), something that is extremely unlikely with more typical sword designs. And secondly, even if that doesn't happen, it's likely heavy enough to generate a decent amount of percussive force on impact, which is actually one of the better ways to damage someone in plate (and which swords are typically poor at doing). Now, obviously you won't be half-swording this and sticking the point in the gap under someone's armpit. A "standard" blade would be infinitely better for that (and that's usually the type of way swords would be used to actually kill someone in plate). But in plate, standing up, swinging swords at each other, you'd probably be doing much more damage blow-for-blow than an opponent wielding a standard cut-and-thrust type blade.

  • @matthewmuir8884

    @matthewmuir8884

    4 жыл бұрын

    @@JCPRuckus Those pick-like points on the sword, even if they do poke a hole in the plate, then have to also get through the arming doublet underneath, and I don't think even they would be able to do so. Not only that, but there's a good chance they could get stuck, which is bad. Swords are very poor at percussive damage, but there is a way around it: the mordhau. You gab the blade with both hands and strike with the pommel or crossguard.

    I'm gonna give you some advice, since I'm most skilled with oversized weapons. Circles. At the end of your strike, you use a slight circular motion to *redirect* the force. You do this every single strike. Never try to stop your momentum with oversized weapons- ever. Use it for your next strike. This isn't just martial advice, as much as I'd love to see you use this in a hema competition; stopping an oversized Sword is way too hard on your body and joints. You could literally hurt yourself trying to stop it- and i have. So yea, there's my advice. Love your work, man. Keep it up.

    Figuring out how to actually fight with this thing effectively would also be very interesting... maybe a wooden or plastic version of this can be made for HEMA practice? It would be interesting to see how it fares against more traditional weapons like other great swords, short swords, axes, spears, ect. Its a bit odd yet interesting because the weight and motion of it is much more heavy, so you would typically use it like an axe, but its entire edge is also a cutting surface, so that definitely plays a role in your ability to attack and defend with it. It would be interesting to see.

    Many African martial arts focus on attacking and counter attacking, and deflecting and blocking to a lesser extent. Miracle The lower durability would be what I'd go with for a general statement, they seemed to hover just a bit higher than steel swords in most games (PoR was a big jump in WT though, but Str was generally better than con) which could still be heavy but not as much on their end. The early games also had lower MT to contend with.

    Dear skall, I know this video is unrelated, but wanted to talk about your opinion on the nagamaki. I have a bias opinion as the nagamaki is my choice eastern weapon and even taught my wife how to use it......basically.......its a katana with a spear handle. See a katana is held towards the bottom of the handle for more control and to aid in the whipping action a katana should be swung with. It's like a pivot point. So, by extending the handle.....you increase the snap of the strike. And with a longer handle, you can execute more full body or full power swings from a bit of a safer distance. I even attatched a yari pike extension to the handle of my dueling lightsaber, to effectively turn it into a nagamaki. The extended handle also provides easier field use for calvary men. Love all that you are, all that you do, and everything you represent. Your the best. Take care.

    im just thinking about how the added mass at the end would bolster cutting power of the center of the blade in my mind. i imagine a good swing that caught someones neck with the last half of the blade (before the large point) would make the head *fly.* That think would cut deep, at least in my mind.

    Holy crap I want one. I'm really attracted to historically accurate swords but this seems so good and within the grasp of reality that I love it. My only concern is the ability to carry it. I know that you can't really go out in public with it, but I wonder how you'd be able to sheath it?

    I literally just thought about it. How does half-swording work with it? With the way it looks, I'm pretty sure you could hook a weapon or shield(or even an arm for what I know) with the flared-head and throw a devastating strike with the guard while half-swording. In fact, I'm pretty sure this design could open up interesting techniques.

    @@Artameful There is if you are against an armour spear formation since you have to get inside that poking range to hit them. Similarly with pole arms but a pole arm fighter can choke up on their weapon easier.

    Actually where it would really shine is on light cavalry. On horse back you could break shield or weapons with well timed swings. Which comes down to it's biggest con which is the weight. You have to be very strong to be able to use this weapon since on horse back you will have to use it one handed mostly.

  • @Artameful

    @Artameful

    5 жыл бұрын

    @@Ontarianmm well my reasoning is its weight will already fuck up armor. The point of half swording is to gain a more maneuverable point and edge, albeit with less range. If it's too heavy, you dont much advantage since the speed you can will become moot. I get what you mean when you have to get inside a poker's range, but at that point you're fighting with a sword, a personal dueling weapon, against a *L O N G B O Y E* a 'go-away weapon. Half swording for this weapon *in particular,* in my untested and understandably questionable opinion, is not as useful as just two handing it and blasting through their guard with extra range than half swording, having to get in range, and possibly grappling.

    no Frostmourne is a two-hander. When the Lich King kills Saurfang, he swings two-handed. Same when he fights you in the ICC raid. Most of the rest of the time, he's using the sword as a magical focus. A functional version would have a slimmer blade, and be stripped of the ridiculous decoration. So...www.swords-and-more.com/shop1/images/40344_600_3.jpg Which given the references to LoTR in the questline to reforge Frostmourne, is exactly what the devs were going for. Interesting comment on Tolkien's ideology.

    Well if you go solely on WoW Lore and Quests. there are more Games that have Arthas in them. I am pretty much talking about the Warcraft 3 games, where Arthas aquires Frostmourne the first time in Northrend and he swings it twohanded as a Paladin at first, but later in the Undead/Scourge campaign he swings Frostmourne one-handed (he swings it also for magic, but i think hitting stuff in the Face is considered Combat, which he does). So i would argue that if it would be reforged, it should be in length between an Arming sword and a 2 handed Sword/Greatsword(/whatever-you-want-to-call-it-sword), so it could be used, one and/or 2 handed. And propably get a much flatter decoration above the handle.

    the armorslayer was used , in game, to slay Armor Knights, knights with incredibly low speed but insanely high defense. The armor slayer was super effective to armor which made it possible for a sword wielding character to take them out if mages were not around, magic ignoring armor stat and instead being stopped by resistance, wich Armor Knights had very little of. But yeah, its a heavy weapon, one you would not take into battle unless you REALLY thought you needed to take out a slow moving heavy armor. Its like armor piercing rounds in sword form.

    I think with heavier swords like this the idea was to use the momentum of the over swing to set up for the next, like you did at 7:32. Most likely the design was to use as little force as possible in each swing to either attack relentlessly, or tire your opponent out faster than yourself

    Although this is likely too late, one historical comparison could be the Khanda. I heard about it through the show deadliest warrior. The tip is entirely blunt, and tapers towards the end away from the hilt to generate more force in the cut

    This sounds a lot like the the Man at Arms channel. They do recreations of a ton of fantasy/movie/game swords (sometimes with modification, sometimes not), and then show them off. They don't really analyze them the way Skall does, though. Might be an interesting collaboration?

  • @Yourantsally

    Larry Garfield no, because all their swords are practically useless. If you watch the videos at the end you see they can barely lift the things. Also they never actually forge the weapons, just carve them out of sheet metal, so they aren't tempered or hardened correctly

    Have you... have you seen the show? Some of the swords are indeed oversized (by design) but a lot are functional. They almost always forge everything as well, what with everyone worshiping Ilya's prowess. And they most certainly temper their weapons. I doubt they mess up on that part since, you know, they're professional blacksmiths.

    Well it would be interesting but I think Skall is more towards discussing swords and possibilities of them in real combat While man at arms wants to provide enteertainment and knowledge about the art of blacksmitthing (and others). Some of the bigger or strange ones are useless from the point of real combat in man at arms, but I would love to see a discussion on that Viking sword Ulfberht (I remember Skall speaking about danish axes more than 1 times). If a collab would be made, I would love it to be more towards the future, how could blades, shields and armor (Ilya as a armorsmith) compete in a world made of guns and vests. Heck even without a collab I would love to see more of that, how could these weapons of old compete with the evolution of gunpowder.
