Faster Hands & Feet (in 10 days)
In this lesson, Jost Nickel is going to teach you the approach he developed to aid himself and his students in the creation of unique and effective drum fills. This method will make your pattern creation way more fun, easy, and above all else, varied. Jost will also teach you ways to utilize and transform the drum fills you already know so you'll have a nice toolbox of ideas by the time you've applied these concepts!

About Jost:
Similar to his friends Benny Greb, Marco Minnemann, and the newly emerging Anika Nilles (one of Jost's students), Jost Nickel is one of the new breed of drummers emerging from Germany that are taking contemporary drumming in a whole new direction. Jost is currently a part of German supergroup Jan Delay & Disko No.1 whose last CDs went straight to #1 in the charts. He has appeared as a clinician and educator in many drum festivals including the Meinl Drum Festival, PASIC, and the Montreal Drum Festival, and has also recently published his first book, "Jost Nickel's Groove Book", which offers a deep insight into his thoughtfully crafted playing and deep pocket.

Since I‘m German, I‘ve known Jost for years. How have I not seen this video before? Anyway, I’ve seen him live with Disko No. 1 a couple of times. I could never wrap my head around his fills, but this lesson made it so easy! Wow! What a great method (although Dave doesn’t seem too convinced 😅). Thanks for inviting Jost to Drumeo, Drumeo. 🎉

What a great concept. One could use any rhythm, sticking or grouping and the possibilities would be limitless. You hear fills like this all the time and think " I've got to learn the entire phrase to play like this". The danger with that approach is that you never end up improvising. Jost is such an incredible educator cause instead of teaching the fill, he shows you how to make up your own.

What an incredible lesson. Jost is so creative and a superb technician. Those two add up to genius in my view. And the solo at the end. I normally don't like drum solos and I am a drummer (trying). But I found myself smiling all the way through to solo. His kit and it's tuning. The cymbal chokes, the I do not know what you call the buzzes and clacks on the snare. These combined with rhythm and a "one" that grounded the solo that came through. And then grooves and fills in a solo context. Wow one just has to listen and watch. The solo is hard to describe but it is just brilliant. Cheers to Jost and Dave and Drumeo.

One thing about Jost I've noticed that I really dig is that he has incredible hihat volume control. Some of my favorite drummers sorta bash away at the hats most of the time. Simon Phillips comes to mind as another person who is careful here. A lesson we can all learn from or be reminded of. Now, I'm not saying it's wrong to chunk the hats but they are very powerful and can easily take away from the groove if they are loud and proud. Ok, that's enough of my opinions I'm going back to practicing.

    Super cool, these patterns are in a Gary Chaffees book. But going with the Jost' exercise, I've made these combo: 1.- R l l K, L r r K 2.- R r l K, L l r K 3.- R l r K, L r l K . We can use it applying the Jost' number system, its fun.
