Every drummer has their own vocabulary and way of expressing it on the drums - that's why solos are so personal, and why there's no one right way to go about playing them. You wouldn't tell an author how to write a book, right?
However, Mark Kelso has some tips you can use to pull out ideas that you already have in your toolbox. Here are five things to keep in mind when you're soloing (that you didn't know you already know):
00:00 - Introduction
01:02 - Dynamics
05:03 - Maximizing One Idea
08:06 - Melody
11:29 - Switch Up The Tempo
14:09 - Design by Subtraction

Mind-blowing and inspiring, Mark... and it's very kind of Drumeo to share this outside the platform 👏
Great lesson. Being a groove drummer mainly, have shied away from soloing when possible but now here's loads of ideas to change all that! Thanks Mark
The tips not only applicable to Solo but overall musicality, creativity and swing of moods! Great great video👍👏
Dynamics and flow are paramount for me. I usually can't stand watching drum solos because they tend to blast you with a wall of notes without actually making it interesting.
The best teacher alive, I am so happy to have studied with u mark!
Great lessons! Thank you Mark Kelso, Jared Falk and all the crew at Drumeo!
this guy is definitely a good teacher - all the analogies he used and explained how to use them and how they applied and then throwing in some Bruce Lee reference on top....nice job!
1.Who is this guy?????! 2.Whyyy have i never heard of this guy before? 3.Why is he sooo good? THIS GUY IS AWESOMEEEE
One of the best videos I've seen in some time. I've not taken the time to develop my solo chops but your video has given me some great ideas. Well done a d thank you

Been playing for a long time, myself - this lesson is solid advice- and this dude is a great player. OK but now back to my blast beats and 32nds around the kit until my neighbors close their windows and blinds.
Thank you for the tips I've been trying to explore more ways to expand my solos thank you and thanks forthe confidence post. I'm pumped and ready to try this out and see what I can come up with

Good teacher and fantastic drummer................very happy I found this video!!
That switch tempo😳 magnificent!
Very nice tips, this will help my upcoming drum solos. Thank you Ser Mark Kelso and Drumeo. Keep it up 🤘🤘🔥.
Great lesson, it's about time somebody shows these Young Bucks that drumming is more than crash boom bang, there's more to playing drums then Hard Rock Style like he said, learn your Dynamics on your drums, learn Melody then you'll have it all he's been playing for 40 years he said, I've been playing for 60 years since I was 8 years old, you do the math, he's just trying to teach you your craft and understand it much better he's a very good instructor!

17:48 is sooo awesome... I love cross stick clicks
Mark is the best!!!!!!!
Fantastic content
You are the guy Mark 👊🏽 what a killed tip bro
Yeah; just like Vinnie said about the new crop/KZread players. "Yeah, there's a lot of facilities out there..." Didn't really mention being intrigued, or anyone catching his ear. 🤔 This is a great teach. ✌🏾🥁 This gentleman is 🔥, my new #1 drumeo video.
“Dynamics!? I’m already laying as loud as I can!” 🤣 I have to say that to the guitar players in my classic rock band.
That "missing" part of the 16th solo part I had learned from Dave W. When I went to one of his clinics. He basically said the same thing you did!!!
The whispering analog was great. I'd never thought of it like that

Great Lesson 100%
Great video
I love this guy
Good stuff. and yeah, the death of dynamics in crash cymbal playing has bummed me out for ages: smash.
solid advice
Thank you
Congratulations on the lesson and thank you. Where could I find the transcript of the whole solo, from the end? Thank you.
thanks a lot!
Very nice
very good
Your nailing is too deep. Inspired tonight. Got to put few chops up with minimized notes . Thanks Man 😊
Yeah brother your video is real talk !
Yoooo! This is the truth right here. Bravo!
Awesome.
Good teacher
Bad or ordinary solo's are created on a concise level trying to impress good solo's are created from the subconscious allowing dynamics and creativity to happen naturally without thinking
Some of the best training I do is to play a solo at ghost note level. Rake the stick on a cymbal sometimes for some unique accents.
This video should have millions of views. The fact it doesn’t proves one of the very first thing he says. I’m gonna track this guy down for private lessons.
1:20 Eric Moore always

YIN and YANG: "In the softness there's power and in the power there's softness. If that's the case it's power all the way, baby. I'm delivering both at once, apparently.😄 Jokes aside, I enjoyed your demonstration. Lots of practical food for thought. Thank you.
