A Flour Mill Over 200 Years Old Closes In Liverpool, Wilson King,Mill Street *Contains Swearing*

there has been a flour mill on this site I'm told for 300 years....i thought it was just over 200
most of the original site was demolished in the 60s and the wilson tower was built
some of the old buildings still remain and i have been very lucky to take a look inside one of them before the place closed and will maybe be lost forever
for this area it is definitely the end of an era.......
there is more history on this place to be found online this is just a little snippet

In 1871 my 2x Gr Grandfather, Peter Hayes was a rice miller and Foreman at Edward Hutchinson's Flour Mill Burlington st. EH died in 1895 Holly Lodge. Took a long time to dig up that info. The family lived @ 38 Henry St. In 1881 Peter died from a burst blood vessel while working in the mill . They were living @ 47 Cornwallis. The family then went down that inevitable slope with the mother dying and the youngest 2 children being sent to Canada. My g grandfather was 14 and that's how my mother's family ended up in Toronto. Thanks for the video

The pond that you mentioned was used as an Emergency Water Supply. To supplement this supply there were 6 special fire hydrants, (5" outlets rather than the regular 2½"), at strategic points on the surrounding roads. I remember the pond having a couple of swans on it.

That’s a great video lad. Just found it after coming across your channel yesterday. I grew in Tillotson close just of Grafton street in the early 90s. I remember the smell from the milll and the noise to. I was also fascinated with the gasometers on Grafton street. Me dad would take me along the mill fields so I could get close to the mill. Great memories.

Hi , I used to be micks supervisor at the mill, I was there for 20 years. It's a pity mick didn't take you down to the old side basement, colloquially known as the catacombs, you would have been well impressed, try again just for that little video, the iron works and stonework is phenomenal. Good luck, brought back strong memories.

I worked on that roof a few years ago, well probably at least 10 years ago. I added a couple of the Telecoms cabs you can see as you enter the roof. We had a crane to lift everything up. I remeber the guy telling me about 'the pond' - it collected water that would be used by the mill fire system in the event of a fire. Apparently it was teeming with fish, they had to get them removed periodically. Not sure if it was in use when I was there, I think the old system had been replaced with mains water and pumps. Funny, this site just popped in my mind, great to see it on youtube, was almost something I'd forgot.

Fantastic video mate, I’ve always been interested in this place from the noise outside, the size and the reservoir in case of fire etc (which there was one on the site many many years ago) real shame it’s closing and as you said very unusual.. I used to work for ADM, I left around ten years ago and as part of my role, I was normally at this site a few times a year, starting from when we bought it from Spillers. It looks no real different here to how it did when I last saw it. I only found this video after seeing on their web site that the Liverpool mill isn't listed any more and I can't find any information as to why it closed and exactly when. From what I remember, we bought the Spillers mills in Liverpool, Newcastle and Tilbury. ADM closed the Newcastle mill and now it looks like the Liverpool one has gone as well. I suppose with Seaforth just down the road, it's not too surprising considering the economic climate. I got on very well with Carole who was the GM when I was working there.
