A first look at the Kvetun two-handed Swiss Sabre

Спорт

A first look at the Kvetun two-handed Swiss Sabre. This was a commission by instructor Michael Thomas for a sparring ready version of the beautiful sword held in the Wallace Collection in London. This sword is an impressive beast, with hand protection that doesn't impede technique while looking as beautiful as it is effective. The blade has significant distal taper, and a slight curve, with a sharp long edge, and clipped weak.

    I was extremely intrigued by that Wallace collection sabre ever since its footage was shown on scholagladiatoria channel. It would be great to hear more in the future about its usage in historical context from you, and also what is extremely interesting is to hear what kind of two-hand-sword techniques cannot be used with it due to hand protection bars and “single-edged-ness”

    Very beautiful. If I were rich, I would get both a sharp cutting version and a blunt sparring version. But most of us can't afford to throw hundreds of $ every week on tatami mats and similar cutting targets, so of course a sparring version is the more practical choice, as it's more likely to be used.

    Re duty, it would be nice if a bunch of hema celebs/KZreadrs could get together to sort out the duty issue. Maybe get together to fund a formal legal advice on what the rate should be on particular kinds of swords and weapons, and a standard reference letter that we can send to the customs when they are trying to overcharge us. My feeling based on the various rates I've been charged over the years is that the customs operatives themselves don't have any standard approach and basically make it up as they go along when they encounter an import. Lovely piece, and thanks for presenting it to us.

    Just went back to rewatch the Tod's Workshop vid where he took his replica of this sword back to the Wallace to have it compared side by side with the original by Tobias Capwell. My first impression when I saw the original again was that the guards were a bit more delicate, but having gone back and forth a few times I think it's mostly just the extra space and grip length to allow for gloves. I think if I were to get one I'd have the original size grip and guard spacing, which would bring the weight closer to the original. We usually use only padded leather gloves when sparring with more protective hilted swords, and with my friends I'd be willing to do that with longswords as well, with this guard. Slight risk, but life is better when you knowingly take a few properly weighed and controlled risks, imo. I can understand why you've gone for full protection, though. Means you can use it with a wider range of sparring partners. And tbh your version is still a fantastic looking piece, anyway.

    What a beautiful sword. Your opponents will really enjoy looking at that sword🤩as you give them an extreme close up 😂 If I had that sword I would not have any metal removed from the blade just yet. Spar with your bro and nick that blade up first and you will have to remove metal to get out the nicks anyway. Plus when you get used to it heavy, it will feel real nice if you do remove some weight. I have some heavy ones and I just file the nicks aggressively to speed up the weight loss without doing anything too drastic. Thanks for showing us the sword, and don’t worry about your eyes in the camera 😉especially when showing a sword close up. Great vid, cheers

    I would love to see some of the sparring! Customs is the biggest issue with ordering from kvetun, but the stuff we got was great, and we "only" had to pay a fifth of the cost of the swords for customs and delivery, with the sword being stuck in customs for 1.5 months for no real reason.(This is for sweden before kvetun had a dedicated European delivery price, not sure how it's now.)

    It looks lovely, thanks for the video. I suppose that, normally, the extra metal in a blunt is balanced by making the blade narrower (profile wise) than the original. In this case, wanting the sword to look like the original made that solution impossible.

    Just a few random questions that came to mind regarding these types of swords: does the guard of the Swiss saber allow you to put fingers above the crossguard into the rings like a rapier? If so, how many fingers can you fit up there, and in sparring do you feel that doing so aids or hinders using the sword for certain techniques? P.S. Since you said "if I've missed something and forget to put it in the description, stick a comment in the comment's section" at the end... What's the blade and grip length of the sword since currently in the description it's "TBC" whatever that means... ;)

    @@AcademyofHistoricalFencing , Thank you for the reply. I probably sounded a little sanctimonious, for which I apologize if so. My collecting philosophy is heavily influenced by the fact that I am not a HEMA practitioner at all, I simply collect the swords for their aesthetic appeal. One could then argue that I might as well just collect more affordable "wall-hangers" if they're only going to be collected for display. However, for me at least, the "realness" or "fakeness" of a sword definitely makes a difference in terms of looks, and it's "battle-readiness" is definitely a factor that informs my appreciation of the weapon. Part of the visual appeal is looking at the thing, and knowing that it at least COULD be used in battle if it had to be. Anyway, I'm rambling, but considering the fact that you definitely do practice HEMA as a sport, it's understandable how that would lead you to a different philosophy when it comes to collecting.

  • @AcademyofHistoricalFencing

    @AcademyofHistoricalFencing

    @@andreweden9405 Really not a problem, I didn't take it that way. And you're right, my focus is on HEMA, so I put my time and money into the gear I can use. I also collect NeoGeo games that sadly cost more than swords, so space and money is limited. So as you say, we approach collecting in different ways. I probably have about 40 blunts right now, but I've owned and sold on easily twice that number. I've got original schiavona and dussacks on my walls, and a couple of Albion sharps (I'll review them some time too). Plus 52 NeoGeo games that are worth more than all the swords combined. One day I'll have the space and money for sharps, originals, blunts and all the NeoGeo games I can find! :-)
