A Few Good Men: Didn't dismiss you HD CLIP

Ойын-сауық

What’s happening in this A Few Good Men movie clip?
Lt. Daniel Kaffee (Tom Cruise from Top Gun and Mission Impossible) in questioning Colonel Nathan R. Jessup (Jack Nicholson from The Shining and Batman) in court about the death of a Marine. The Colonel dismissed the Lieutenant’s questions as being unimportant to the case, so he stands up heads to the door to leave the room. However, he is stopped in the action as the Lieutenant says that he didn’t dismiss him and is asked to go back to his seat for further questioning. The conversation intensifies when the flight records are brought in. The Lieutenant asks the Colonel why his man was in danger when all the orders have to go through him. The Colonel explains that he did what was best for the country and his men and does not need to explain himself.

What’s the A Few Good Men movie about?
Tom Cruise (from Top Gun and Mission Impossible), Jack Nicholson (from The Shining and Batman), and Demi Moore (from Ghost and Charlie’s Angels: Full Throttle) star in Rob Reiner's unanimously acclaimed drama about the dangerous difference between following orders and following one's conscience. Cruise stars as a brash Navy lawyer who's teamed with a gung-ho litigator (Moore) in a politically explosive murder case. Charged with defending two Marines accused of killing a fellow soldier, they are confronted with complex issues of loyalty and honor, including its most sacred code and its most formidable warrior (Nicholson). Superbly directed with a trio of powerhouse performances and an outstanding supporting cast including Kevin Pollak (from The Usual suspects), Kiefer Sutherland (from 24 and Designated Survivor), and Kevin Bacon (from Footloose and Apollo 13).

Don't forget the judge in "My Cousin Vinny." Yale or Harvard grad, very professional. In fact, that whole movie avoided the "evil southern redneck" trope. One of my favourite parts of this entire scene is how Jack Nicholson reacts with embarrassment and resignation to the Judge's clapback at 1:58. The way he quickly looks back and forth, speechlessly, before slumping into his chair with that deep sigh is such brilliant characterization. There's real complexity in conveying narcissism so deep that he'd absentmindedly betray his own principles by disrespecting military rank and order, which means everything to him, before quietly submitting in acknowledgment of his mistake. Narcissism that prevents him from apologizing, and pride that compels him to obey.

Jessup through Kendrick played up the Marine's loyalty. Remember when Dawson said their code was "Unit, Corp, God, Country"? This plays into the adage that you can't serve 2 masters. These men were conditioned to put their unit and the Marine Corps above God and that was their folly in this case. They were ordered by their commanding officer(in this case Lt. Kendrick) to give an alleged inept Marine a "code red" because in their mind he was a threat to the unit and the Corp because he snitched. Jessup could have easily transferred him off the base and given whatever excuse he wanted and it wouldn't have upset the apple cart, so to speak. But Jessup's ego got the best of him and wanted Santiago "retrained". Downey was naive and simply followed what Dawson vis Kendrick told him but he like the rest were brainwashed into the "unit, Corp, God, country" mentality. Dawson though could have been a leader but because orders are followed, he couldn't disobey his commanding officer again especially on the heels of the Curtis Bell incident mentioned in the movie. Sadly, Dawson got it in the end but too late for Santiago. He said it was their job to fight for those who couldn't fight for themselves. By not only failing to protect Santiago and ultimately taking part in his death he understood that the dishonor was his and the dishonorable discharge was justified. Lcpl. Howard Dawson was a good man. He just listened to the wrong people.

Fortunately, he recovers just in time and starts to risk it a bit more by upping his game. And it pays off. And I think that's fine. Having a small moment of weakness doesn't take away from his badassery one bit, IMO.

Jessup didn't slip up. There are certain types of men who believe they are above the law, especially powerful white men. They don't want to hide who they are. lol a small gigantic point is that at least 80% of Jessup's "testimony" is beyond the scope and would be stricken: asking the attorney questioning him if he has actual questions that could get his clients off, other than "phone calls and foot lockers"; asking him if he's ever served in an infantry unit etc.; the entire long diatribe monologue at the end (not shown here) about Santiago's death "while tragic, probably saved lives"; not to mention his early refusal to answer Kaffee's question, and cutting him off, saying "Check the Tower Logs, for Chrissake" (objection, argumentative, sustained). Jessup's statements that would actually get on the record are probably about two minutes total in this whole long scene. But then it wouldn't make for one helluva smashing film.

Another bozo amateur "film critic". This is such a sh!tty scene. 99.9% of people cant see the stupidity that Hollywood regurgitates. @1:52 Tom Cruise is SOOOO damn nervous he's quaking like a nervous little girl while drinking water, then within 5 seconds, the time it takes him to turn around, he instantly, magically transforms into a smug, ultra confident, pointed litigator. Its garbage writing and acting, but people are too stupid to ascertain it.

Rule One of the Courtroom: The Judge has every bit of authority they need to screw you and your case or defense from here to kingdom come. It is important to remember this at all times, and not piss them off. The judge controls what you can and can't present as evidence, use as a line of questioning, call as a witness, basically everything to do with the procedure of the case. A large and crucial part of courtroom strategy, and success, is keeping the judge inclined to rule in your favor as much as possible. So, pissing the judge off is tantamount to literally throwing the case whether you are innocent or not, because if you have to admit something unusual as evidence that's not immediately and obviously relevant or take an odd or seemingly unrelated line of questioning to make your case, you will be cut off before you can start.
