Yeah, people who don’t live in a country with a federal system seem to think Federalism is a jump straight to fully centralized rule and not the compromise BETWEEN centralized and local rule that it’s always been. The whole "accept more 'refugees' out of solidarity for the south" argument is such a strange line of thought. If mass migration of Middle Easterners and Africans is indeed such a horrible plague, surely the answer is not to encourage even more migration by rewarding those who successfully make the trip, but to discourage it by returning them to their countries of origin. I'm aware that the 1951 Refugee Convention, written for the completely different context of WWII, are seen by some as Holy Gospel, but an increasing segment of the population is growing exasperated with this endless self-flagellation. In Germany, they were once relatively good, then there were scandals, e.g. with Gerwald Claus-Brunner: "On September 19, 2016, a suicide note reached Claus-Brunner's constituency office,[32] whereupon the police were notified. The latter found Claus-Brunner and 29-year-old Jan Mirko L. dead in Claus-Brunner's apartment on Schönhauser Straße in Berlin-Steglitz. A homicide squad and the Berlin public prosecutor's office began an investigation.[33] The autopsy revealed that Claus-Brunner died by suicide. The victim, Jan Mirko L., was himself a member of the Pirate Party,[32] had been acquainted with Claus-Brunner for several years, and was at times a staff member in his constituency office. Claus-Brunner is said to have been romantically attracted to the 29-year-old. The latter lived in a relationship with a woman and apparently did not return Claus-Brunner's feelings.[34] Jan Mirko L. had filed charges of stalking against Claus-Brunner in the spring of 2016, but these were allegedly not pursued further, as L. had not responded to police questions in this regard. [35] In addition, there had been a complaint by Claus-Brunner against L. for defamation.[2] The police investigated that on the evening of September 15, 2016, Claus-Brunner killed L. in his apartment in Berlin-Wedding by blunt force against the upper body[36] or by strangulation[20]. Claus-Brunner is said to have then taken the body to his apartment.[37] Five days after the two bodies were found, police were given a package that Claus-Brunner had sent to a former partner before his suicide and that had not reached the addressee. It contained a document in which Claus-Brunner confessed to killing the 29-year-old, as well as personal items. This document contained information about what the prosecutor's office called the "highly personal" motive. The public prosecutor's office then discontinued the investigation because dead bodies are not being investigated and further participants in the crime were ruled out.[35] During his last plenary speech on June 23, 2016, Claus-Brunner had said to the deputies addressed, they would for him "in the current legislature [...] at the beginning of any plenary session times may stand up and be silent for a minute", which was interpreted in retrospect as a hint at his later suicide.[38] According to the then chairman of the Pirate Party Berlin, Bruno Kramm, Claus-Brunner claimed to suffer from a chronic disease that leads to organ failure. According to a doctor's statement, he still had a life expectancy of about one year.[39] The Berlin public prosecutor's office stated that the autopsy showed no evidence of such a disease.[32]" Then a very leftist woman took over the party leadership and it went downhill with the polls, also because she had very specific statements about men, etc., which she voiced privately. For a few years now, the party has come out of oblivion again, because they have led a campaign against Article 17 and the other Eu plans and have organized protests. But they will not get over the 5% hurdle, because for most people they have become too left-wing and for leftists there are already the Greens and the Left.

I feel like there are a lot of misunderstandings about volt trying to take all power away from national governments. That is just not true. Volt advocates for federalized Europe in which topics of European scale (climate change, migration, foreign policy etc) are addressed by a European government while other topics still get solved on the Regional or even local level. This also won't mean that people will have to give up their culture, tradition or identity. Also Volt is very much a Grassroots movement and despite them having a shared (top down) platform the organizational culture is built around citizen empowerment and engaging with topics on all levels of government. This is why Volt is also very active in local politics and started multiple citizens initiatives.

I think if this was to even happen it would need more than just two levels being National and Europe. There’s probably need to be European regional levels too, like Northern (Scandinavian) level, Western, Mediterranean (perhaps a separate Iberian one idk) to focus on regional European affairs. So you’d have the Federal European level that has laws that cover the entirety of Europe. Then you’d have the more Regional European level which would be a bit bigger but the laws would only affect the countries in that region. And then a national level which would focus on nation specific things like local taxes and building houses and healthcare and stuff.

While I see how creating safe conditions and stable jobs in the countries of origin of the migrants would be the optimal solution (as it tackles the problem at it's root), I think it is far more realistic to look for solutions inside the EU. The reason simply being that the EU has no jurisdiction and limited influence in third countries and therefore all efforts in those countries would be much more difficult, hard to push through and hard to maintain. Not saying we should not also persue those efforts, since migration to the EU is a symptom rather than the core problem, however there should be a back up plan in case the EU can not convince third countries to stop their wars or civil wars with the "Oh, come on, please?" method. (I know the EU has some more influence, but if a country is not interested in genuine cooperation and they don't depend on access to the EU markets, there is not much that can be realistically achieved.)

Seeing their success, I am quite a bit more likely to vote for them in the next election. Their goals are going to be hard to achieve, but I am firmly on board with the federalisation of Europe. While I believe the EU can survive without it, it cannot do so as a fore-runner in global politics. Europe will be overtaken economically and in population by China, India, and other developing nations in the future. Europe's strength is crucial to ensure these nations eventually develop to embrace the ideals (human rights, social mobility, universal healthcare, etc) that have made the EU one of the best places to live on earth (for the average person). I am a Volt Member in Germany and think it is amazing, that you talk about Volt. And unsurprisingly I do indeed think that today we need to think politics from an EU level. Just like it was right to base partys on a national level before the existence of the EU. For Example in Germany after 1871. But the world has changed and many problems require bigger solutions. Which is why we aim for a federal European state that can more efectively deal with those problems. While of course leaving issued which dont require a european response at the other political levels. In my opinion more european integration is also necessary to enable Europe to be a counterweight in the world against China and the US, which boath have very different ideas about core issues of the future, like data security and privacy, as compared to many in the EU. But all of this is of course a long term goal and will be difficult to achive. But then again, if we dont try it, nothing will happen.

The oldest nations currently probably exist for a thousand years, having gone through a lot of changes in that time (for example France today vs France 500 years ago or France 1000 years ago, big difference). Some empires (like the Romans, Byzantines, Ottomans, ...) lasted for several hundred years, longer than several large nations today (US +-250 years, modern China +-70-100 years, Russia +-500 years, ...). Now, if we look at why these nations fall, it usually is more due to corruption and internal powerstruggles together with outside pressures then ethnic and cultural differences, these usually started to really cause trouble once the empires already were in decline (essentially when things go great/fine, people don't really care, but when things start to go more difficult/badly, they start to look at reasons and often they use culture and/or ethnicity as a possible solution, even if this is not the best thing to do).

I do believe Volt's way of doing things is the best way to tackle climate change and a lot of other issues. So I do hope they'll be able to get elected because frankly at this point I think climate change is almost the only political issue that matters, we need to change how we do things fast. But I still don't think it's gonna save the EU, I think it's gonna do the complete opposite. Let's say Volt's become very popular in the Netherland and Germany as well as somewhat popular in France, Belgium, Austria, Ireland, Portugal and Spain which I really don't think is that unlikely. Then let's say this allow them to get a good share or even a majority of the seats in the EU parliament. The problem is, they still aren't and will never be popular in Poland, Italy, Greece, Hungary, Sweden and the Balkans. Now, this won't stop Volt from becoming powerful but given that their plan is to use that power to change the laws of countries that never voted for them, well, I just don't see how that's supposed to save the EU. That kind of thing is already what fuels separatist sentiment in all of those countries. Mind you, might say if they don't want to change their laws they might as well leave anyway and sure, it might be better to just rip the bandaid off and stop trying to compromise with countries that don't want to follow the EU laws. But my point is, this will fracture the EU even more, not save it.

I wouldn't expect Volt to gain a foothold in Ireland tbh. Young voters who desire radical change are likely to vote for Sinn Féin, a left wing nationalist party which would not be supportive of a Federal EU. Also climate change is very far from the only important political issue at the moment. There's wars, famine, genocide, racism and a whole lot else going on in the world atm. Even in the west, multiple countries have housing shortages and a homelessness problem. You go and tell a homeless person today that the only important political issue is that rising sea levels will make them homeless again in 20-30 years. They already have serious issues now, they're not going to give a flying fuck about problems of migration or whatever in 30 years. And that's only one serious issue, there's hundreds more in each country. Climate change and other serious issues need to be tackled hand in hand. Focusing on just one won't cut it.

The EU exists to solve EU-wide problems. If EU-wide problems persist, then the EU isn't fulfilling it's purpose that's it's employees are paid for. The fact is across the EU the democratic electorate don't want asylum seekers invading their communities, so why not respect that and stop accepting more of them? Apply some logic to the problem: root cause analysis. The problem with asylum seekers isn't with the EU, it's with the failed states the asylum seekers are leaving. That's what needs to be fixed, otherwise those failed states will persist.

European parties must mainly operate at a European level. It is not desirable for many countries to bring European affairs to a national level. This would mean that a country's culture has to adapt to the whole of Europe. The Netherlands without drug regulation? Spain without Tomatia partying? Germany without Indeterminate speed on the autobahn? Small countries such as Ireland, Luxembourg, Belgium and the Netherlands, which are not allowed to have tax benefits, suddenly have nothing to say anymore. Strange, because Volt uses the position 'it doesn't stop at the national border'. That's right. But the European tax system is not a solution for tax havens. it ensures that tax havens move outside the eu. By the way, the small countries are not tax havens according to the law, but simply champion bookkeepers. They transfer money and profit margins back and forth..which is just legal. So you can choose to "make a little money and create work" or make no money and lose jobs".

One key reason for my voting Brexit at the time was that there was no direct voting for policies at an EU level because there were no EU parties asking for a democratic mandate at an EU level, so the EU was inherently undemocratic. Parties such as Volt (but importantly, not a single party, but many such parties) are a key to legitimising the EUs democratic credentials. That's what I thought when I was younger but now I think the exact opposite. Instinctively it is logical to think "the bigger we are the more powerful we will be" but in fact it is different because the EU is not a country, does not have a European people but is made of nations with different histories, languages, cultures and interests. Today and for years, Europe is the economic zone with one of the lowest growth rates in the world, while very small countries such as Switzerland, South Korea and Israel are doing very well economically because they show agility and strategy. Since its creation, Europe has been a vassal of the Americans at all levels, military, economic, cultural, political and diplomatic. Besides, this is the original goal of Europe, to create a block powerful enough to resist the USSR and be allied to the Americans. I think that more federalism would continue to precipitate the decline of Europe and that in order for us to get out of the water we should return to inter-state cooperation, besides all the great European successes such as Airbus or even the ESA are inter-state projects and not community projects.

  • @RafaelW8

@@Spallding75 You are wrong. If the EU doesn't federalize, it will fail. There are big issues that smaller countries can't face themselves. If there is no EU and no EU democratic values, single EU member states will be susceptible to Chinese, Russian and US interference, like they have been for decades. Furthermore, looking inwards, like you suggest, will cause in-fighting between member states. This is the worst thing that can happen, we don't want a repeat of WW2 and I sincerely hope people who share your opinion will never be in a position of power to make those changes. Nothing personal to you, I just wholeheartedly disagree with your analogy.

It would be interesting to see. Just as the us breaking up would harm the global economy and themselves, so too would the EU breaking up. Perhaps the EU needs a Shay's rebellion to actually create a federation like it did in 1787 US (previously a confederation). The other thing to look at is a compromise: libertarian-style minimalist govt (preferably regional, national, and EU wide). An EU that can only handle immigration quotas/border protection, monetary & fiscal policy (we've seen what happens without), and self-defence (Japanese-style article 9). Nations could handle culture & tourism promotion, zoning guides to keep the national look, and incorporation of businesses. Local govt could implement the zoning guides, education, and healthcare. As for other non-criminal(?) laws we have now, business associations and unions would need to negotiate for 3-5 year contracts on policies (some done by govt now) and could do so EU-wide as those contracts would only apply to the businesses and their workers.

Countrys are not just places where random people live. And this is main idea that defines country. To culture or nation to stay independent they need to have an independent country. And countrys have different natural resources that can be beneficted on people. Country who dont have its own energy production will be dependent on they trade partners good will and if they trade partners think they can force some rules or behavior by denying necessity it will take away independence and uniqueness. And when all uniqueness of people and countries are revoked then there will rise question why we need contrys why we need rules what countrys impose on people and what right they have to impose those rules. Every country is different on their main idea. Big proportion of countrys are established to defend they national identity without this people could ask why they need a country to tell them how to live and tax them. Some countrys are established as economic communions to stay on people well being and some main idea is stay for they own people civil rights. But there is already clear pattern. Some countrys revoke they own people civil rights and try to expand foreign right by own people expense. Thouse people could ask what loyality they own to country who have betrayed them?
