Cases like these make me extra sad because this was an honest accident. He wasn't being dumb and fooling around with medicine, taking 10 times the normal dose on purpose for a joke or to impress someone. He knew what he was doing and it went wrong because of something outside of his control.

I hate to say it but he was dumb. You should not be handling one animal in a crush with other livestock loose in the yard around you...especially if they are about to calve! It's basic health and safety in a farming environment. An accidental needle stick is the least of your worries. A grumpy 500kg cow can easily kill you by crushing you against the rails or ground. I've been a farmer for 50 years. Sadly you see lots of stupid dead farmers....

Reminds me of something that happened to an old chef I worked for. He was a cattle farmer and also used chewing tabacco (this will become relevant) and had a similar experience with one of his cows. He got kicked in the chest so hard that he went into cardiac arrest and was barely able to call his then girlfriend to get on the phone and call 911. He ended up in a coma and seemingly made a full recovery. Fast forward a week after he wakes from his coma, and he gets a lung infection. This was from the chewing tabacco he had in his mouth, which he swallowed during the kick and some got lodged in his lungs and created the infection. He went septic and was put in a medically induced coma. This time when he woke he had some sort of brain damage and couldn’t read, walk, talk, or anything. He had to relearn how to do all of that. After hearing that I was very surprised that the man is even alive today.

I was in my 30s in north central Nebraska helping some rancher friends vaccinate some cattle. My job was to inject the nearly 1000 lbs cattle with a dose of 7 way vaccine. The chute wasn't built for the size critters we were working and a steer lunged as I attempted the shot. I took the entire dose in my arm and backed the hell away pulling the needle out. Everyone got concerned and two of the cowboys led me away and sat me down. We had no phone service and I felt like crap but I wasn't experiencing any bad symptoms other than dizziness and a weird sensation all over internally. About 20 minutes later I went back to work at the chute. I never did like working livestock in poor conditions but that sealed the deal for me. I'm now in my mid 60s with that life time 7way injection. I was lucky and know it. Few people really know how hard AG producing is and it's usually a hardship that leads to an accident, God bless our Ranchers and Farmers cause I like to eat!

My wife knew this family and is familiar with the accident. Micotel has no antidote and NIOSHA recommends using other much safer antibiotics. They also recommend single dose loading of the hypodermic injector......one dose, for one animal at a time. Also recommended is a hardened carrying case to transfer the injector to the stall where it will be used. All stalls should be solid built and if possible the ones next to the working stall vacated. Lots of ways to die out here in the country!

I am telling you this as a nurse. Distraction, and not listening to your own intuition are big problems. Remember, you can always work overtime if you need to, which is usual, but you cannot go back in time. Stay as calm as possible. Somewhat reminds me of a story I once read by british zoo vet David Taylor who managed to accidentially poisoned himself when trying to tranquilize some kind of antilope. The tranquilizer in question was perfectly safe for most animals but not for primates (humans included) who were considerable more sensitive to it, so that even a tiny amount could already result in a lethal overdose. Taylor was using a blowdart to administer the tranquilizer because he couldn't get close to the animal and as he was shooting the dart he noticed a tiny droplet of cold liquid enter his mouth. Fortunately for him, the drug came with an antidote, specifically because it was so easy to accidentially poison yourself with, and in a panic, he immediately injected that antidote, right through his clothes. Just in time as well, as the drug had already started taking effect and since it was an opioid (might have been carfentanil, I don't quite remember) he started tripping balls and drifting out of consciousness. In the end, he survived without any longterm side effects from the drug, however because he hadn't taken the time to disinfect the puncture site before injecting the antidote he ended up catching an infection there that left him incapacitated for a week or two.

I think the bigger problem is things like that need to be published as a full written case report, and that's a lot of effort for every circumstance. There should be some more streamlined process where they can just file away, Tilmicosin poisoning, patient died prior to treatment. That way also when people are searching, they don't have to read 5000+ case studies, it's just a line for line comparison, this worked, this didn’t. Makes it much easier for collating data.

For real. It's the darn complacency of people. Possible things that in theory should be impossible still happen because people lower their guard. That's all it takes. No excuses. 😔 When I was in the US Army, complacency was the biggest military sin. It was the monster to fear, yet people still became complacent and bad stuff always happened. For example, we had to have blade walkers on every rotor blade when pulling birds out of the hangar. We needed to rotate them slowly as to not hit the walls and the other aircraft. Well, one guy in our company wasn't paying attention in what was a focused, careful, slow process, and the tip of his blade smacked the hangar door. Hearing that sound is nightmare fuel.😫 Why? There shouldn't be any. Period. A blade hitting anything should be theoretically impossible if one is paying attention.😬 We got in so much trouble, even the other companies.

I was thinking the exact same thing. It really does add to the storyline by painting a more complete picture, though it is admittedly a small contribution. But when I saw the farmer on an actual farm, showing an actual "crush" (which is a term some use for the part that partially closes around their neck but won't let the head or shoulders through, and is used for hoof trimming, abscess drainage or anything else that needs the cows to stay put, but staying put is the last thing on their minds with what you're doing), and seeing other small things that they didn't _need to do_ but they did anyways, I was once again impressed with the level of research that went into the *non medical* part of the script. I was wondering who on his team takes the insane amount of time and effort to setup these shoots. Do they fly one or two people to each location or do they find someone local? Either way it's not as easy as one would think, when viewed through the channel producer's eyes at least.

It clearly says on the products and (or on the package leaflet) how to use them! Not reading or following these instructions is not a mistake, it's just stupid! @Purgatory Maybe Look at the phrasing of it. It's quite clear. He was a good man because he died for society's benefit - another, typical, disposable male. Maybe she didn't mean it that way; if not, cool, just edit the post and make it more clear. The idea of males being more disposable and less valuable than women is not a new thing, and is so heavily ingrained into the cultural subconscious that most people are completely oblivious to even the existence of such an idea. We're literally inundated to it because it is constantly socially queued from birth, to both sexes. For example, studies have shown that new parents tend to let male infants cry for much longer than female infants before doing anything about it. Discipline towards male children, at nearly all points in history and in nearly all cultures, is demonstrably *FAR* harsher than the disciplining of female children, regardless of which parent is acting upon it. In trouble with the law? Once again, study after study after study shows that women performing illegal acts are far less likely to even be charged, or convicted, than a male commiting identical acts. Assuming she's even convicted, the disparity of sentencing severity between males and females is so pronounced that some female serial killers have cited it as a motivation for them to continue their criminal lifestyle (Eileen Wuornos is a great example of this). Women demand equal employment opportunities and recognition in the workplace, yet study after study after study, regardless of geographic location and development, shows that the most dangerous and stressful jobs, however necessary they are, will be avoided like the plague by women - just let the disposable males die doing necessary yet dangerous labor and don't think twice about it! Go take a look at history and it's always been like this, literally everywhere, regardless of what it entails (other than being dangerous). My voicing of the preceding sentences? How dare I! Obviously, I must surely be a misogynist for stating such a thing, regardless of the veracity and endless fetting of such a claim. Women say they want more men to get involved in discussions of gender inequality, and yet the very moment a male opens his mouth in such a forum and voices even the most mildly dissenting or alternative view, he will be immediately silenced, reprimanded, and publicly shamed for speaking his mind, valuing his own experiences, or having his own opinion. Is it any wonder that the only men you find in such Western circles are essentially sycophantic parrots, by necessity, that have been endlessly brainwashed and gaslighted into martyring and marginalizing themselves? I'm not even allowed to have a voice of my own, should it go against a woman's perceptions. Consider the degree of privilege required to literally shut someone down for disagreeing with you, by default, regardless of the weight of their words. Worst of all, there are now actions being taken to censor such things from being said - to wholly prevent any non-fem-centric dialogue from being established. Meanwhile, a domino-line of countries either pass or are pressured to pass "femicide" laws that quite literally make a woman's life twice as valuable as a male's (go ahead, look up the penal codes). Heaven forbid I not arbitrarily, blindly put others ahead of myself purely by virtue of them having a vagina - isn't that real equality, after all? To answer your question, I'm not mad, but I think that's plenty to be quite angry about. Hopefully, with all of that in mind, upon re-reading the original post and considering the phrasing of it, you'll see why I posited such questions as I did. Maybe she didn't mean it like that. If not, cool, I'm sure she won't have a problem editing it to clarify that the guy had value as a person beyond merely being an extension of his wife and kids.

Fun fact: The cardiotoxic effects of Tilmicosin (brand name: Micotil) in humans are well known to the point that the "veterinary drugs directorate" of Canada already issued guidelines to all hospitals on how to treat such an intoxication back in 2003. The official treatment recommendation is Dobutamine, which as a beta-1 receptor agonist does have positive ionotropic effects, partially counteracting the negative ionotropic ones of the tilmicosin that are causing the heart issues. Besides accidents, another reason for human exposure seems to be people who are more willing to inject themselves with cow antibiotics than to seek actual professional medical help.
