    @@coldramen_1nah its the smart way to go, sure fans blow up but look at jordan love, even mahomes sits a yr. Being 26 in the nfl is the new 22 for qbs, if your talented youll be able to play well into the 40s the way the nfl is setup now. A qb that gets time to learn under a really good qb is where its at, throwing them in 1st yr literally hardly ever works, plus if kirk gets injured which he does alot they have actual backup. At least the Broncos actually needed QB, didn't have a second round pick, and there was only one good QB left on the board. If the Broncos couldn't trade down, there was a historic run on QBs so it was now or never to take Nix. Even if it's a reach the pick still makes sense because I wouldn't want Zach Wilson or Jarrett Stidham starting for an entire season either. The Falcons didn't need a QB, had a second round pick, and there were three good QBs on the board left. They took Penix who I think isn't as good of a prospect as McCarthy or Nix. If they really liked Penix that much they could've had him in the second round. Literally everybody knew the Vikings, Broncos, and Raiders wanted different QBs other than Penix. If the Falcons wanted the fifth year option they could've traded up to the end of the first round to take him there instead of their first pick. The Falcons royally screwed this one up in every conceivable way.

    @@TheCyberAthlete yes it would be a shame and honestly odds are pretty strong all of that could happen. Matt Ryan not withstanding Atlanta has notoriously bad luck at the QB position. That still doesn't mean there is no potential at all in this scenario though. If things go as planned the team gets back to having a winning record with Cousins while grooming their potential next QB. The idea makes a lot of sense EXCEPT the team is taking a hell of a gamble on the two QBs they are relying on.

  • @shmeebs387

    @shmeebs387

    Not really. Cousins's contract is super front-loaded. They can cut him after the second year easy if he declines, which is possible since he's 35 years old coming off an Achilles tear. He could retire in a couple years anyway. First round QBs are lottery tickets. Now they have a lottery ticket and a safe option. And the lottery ticket gets to sit and learn for a couple years while you evaluate if he can play in the NFL.

    I was hanging out in the Bootleg stream last night and EJ had a pretty good call on what might've been going on - The Falcons may have been planning to draft Cousins' replacement *next* year, but with the tampering investigation were worried they might not have a 2025 first rounder. If the plan was always to cut or trade Cousins before the '27 season (and the contract is very team-friendly if that's the route they decide to go), then Penix with 3 years of backup experience is gonna be a much better QB situation in '27 than whoever they might end up drafting in '26 or'27.

    @@goldenageofdinosaurs7192 I might be delusional, but I think he might actually be that guy. I full heartedly believe that Penix will end up being the best QB from this class. In my eyes, the Falcons just secured their future after Kirk leaves or retires. The Falcons can have Penix sit behind Kirk and learn for 2-4 years just like Jordan Love did. And we all can see how that turned out. In fact, I think the strategy the Packers have employed for QB development is the best strategy and that more teams should do this.

We were so far down we couldn’t get the WRs we wanted. And we didn’t need OTs or QBs. Fortunately many prime picks were ignored by teams scrounging for QBs. In the end we get to get the best of the 2nd round (made larger by that QB scrounging) and a couple more others we can use to make our team more youthful. It’s still fraught with risk but it’s not a slam dunk stupid move like the Falcons’.
