Ikzelf ben meerdere keren in Iowa geweest. Daar zie je het echte Amerikaanse leven ( ik moet daarbij wel vermelden dat ik in de gelegenheid was om meerdere keren bij de inwoners zelf voor enkele weken mocht logeren ).

    We were really not expecting that much culture haha Ruth had been but I(Thomas) hadn't before so I was just expecting a normal town with a few Dutch-themed things. But they're really proud of their heritage and it seemed like every business paid homage to their Dutch roots in some capacity. Y'all should definitely check it out if you're ever in that area, a lot of fun things to see and do. Pella's only a 5 hour drive from Chicago! haha

  • @ivylavoix
    @ivylavoix2 жыл бұрын

    So happy you were able to visit! I went to college in this town and the Tulip Time Festival was the highlight of the year! The Windmill is actually fully functional and you can buy the flour in the Historical Village gift shop. The Klokkenspel figures actually do things, but the Wyatt Earp figure tends to be stuck frequently haha. The figures tell the story of the founding of Pella so you will see Domine Scholte (the reverend who lead the group), his wife Marie (pronounce Mariah) crying over her broken Delftware, Wyatt Earp (he grew up in the town and his boyhood home is in the historical village!), and the figures on the back side show aspects of Dutch culture like carving wooden shoes (they are NOT clogs and Pella people get very huffy about that), scrubbing the streets, and of course tulips! I hope you can make it to the actual festival this year! There is so much to see including people in traditional costumes from the Netherlands, educational presentations, parades daily, Dutch food, tours of the city, folk dancing, and plenty of live entertainment!

    The granary had Gosselink Builders stenciled inside. They were located west of town before the town expanded and made farm outbuildings. The Gosselinks were friends of our family and we played in the buildings every time we were there. The Pella refugees landed in Baltimore, not Boston. My great-grandfather was a Pella wooden shoe maker. A pair of his wooden shoes were presented to Teddy Roosevelt when he came through Pella on a train from Des Moines to Keokuk.

    No! Shoot. We didn’t have as much time to explore Pella as we wanted, but that sounds really cool! Is it located near the downtown area?

    We call the dutch letter a banketstaaf/letter. But this looks like a simple americafied version and it should not be that dry. My mom likes to heat them up in a pan. Also the S stands for St nicholas

    Oh cool! Yeah, the Dutch Letter was delicious! We really want to go to the Netherlands sometime and see the Dutch culture there. And thanks for letting us know - our favorite thing about this channel is when people comment on our videos and tell us things we didn't know!

    It is way too weird living in Pella and knowing everything about it then watching other people's perspectives and how they pronounce names.

    great thumbnail! I had no idea the difference between a granary and a silo either. Nor did I realize there were more pigs than humans in Iowa.. I can see the eyelashes as metal.

    Yes! Hahaha Ruth had no idea what I meant when I said they looked "metal" ... glad you guys got it! And thanks so much, guys 😊 We always forget to be intentional with our thumbnails, but it's awesome y'all liked this one - that means a lot.

    @@RuthandThomas definitely get it and can see it too. Pretty sure there is a band called eyelash. Haha. We're the same with thumbnails. Tony usually has to dig into his bag of Photoshop tricks and pull a screenshot from our videos to edit. We need to be more thoughtful in that part of the planning.

    Hahaha I (Thomas) was never the biggest fan of bologna - I think it's because we ate A LOT of it growing up and then I ate it a lot in college (just because it was the cheapest meat I could find).. but these sandwiches we're really tasty. The bologna had much more flavor than the cheap stuff I would usually get haha and the melted swiss cheese just made it 👌🏼🙌🏼
