A Dump Truck Full Of Gravel Rolled Over On Our Road...

While trying to get the gravel for my septic system I called a guy to come and haul it for me. While he was attempting to unload the gravel at my place his brakes went out and nearly killed the driver. I should have been sitting in the passenger seat.... This is bad

I REALLY hope the driver's wife or employer convinces him to get checked out medically. What a blessing that neither of you were killed! (And you probably would've been if you'd stayed in that truck. Good job listening to the Spirit to get out.) Happy Birthday, Cedar! I'm sure you'll never forget this one.

Praises to God that you both are safe, that you were able to get out, and that he wasn't impaled by trees or thrown out of the truck on the way down! The lost gravel can easily be replaced. Neither you nor the driver are so expendable. I'm sure it's frustrating to lose progress on your build because of the lost gravel, but I'll bet you Cedar and your kids aren't worried about that at all right now! More likely, they're glad you came home safe to them tonight.

It is odd that he would loose his brakes like that. Those older trucks tend to have had the better systems. And if air pressure was lost you would think the spring brake would have come on. Well it sucks that it happened. Glad no one was hurt. End of the day they can build another truck.... can't build new loved ones.....

Dan... If you only knew. The passenger door was jammed when I initially tried to get out. I almost didn't get out because my truck was back at the gravel pit. There was NO logical explanation why I got out. When my door jammed, he took the hammer and got out on his side. In the middle of that I got my door open and jumped out. 30 secs later all hell broke lose... All too crazy to absorb at the moment but again, the driver is fine and I'm fine.

OMG.. am so so so happy the he is ok... God was by his side... and you... look friend i just found out about your Channel two days ago and have watched every episode binge-watch making sure to hit the like button. you are an inspiration to The Working Man. my name is Tommy and I live in Chattanooga Tennessee and I'm proud to say thank you for all that you do and the knowledge that you pass on to others. God will never let you down he'll always be at your side. the number one thing that keeps attracting me back to your show is the fact that you are a man of faith. but you're not all in my face about it you're not perfect and you're not afraid to admit it... just since watching your videos you give me the motivation to get up off of my butt and start working towards my goal and dreams to do the same thing that you and your family are doing. September 3rd I will be 40 years old. and I feel like I'm so far behind. to see what you have accomplished in such a short period of time although I do realize it's longer then whatever peers to be in your short clips in short movies. I look forward 2 years of more and just can't wait to see what that shop is going to look like when it's done. does that make me strange I'm excited about the shop house more than I am the actual house LOL. may God continue to be with you and your family PS I love your son's new old dirt bike lol I was a 77 baby myself. thank you and have a blessed day

Wow! Many people have already said what most needed to be said, which is about gratitude for being alive. I suspect though, that the driver might have been afraid to go to the hospital or call an ambulance if he didn't have health insurance. Most likely all his muscles will hurt for a few days, but it doesn't start right away. He does need to get checked out, no matter what he says. It's costly no matter what. And as someone else said, I hope you leave everything as is and get the authorities and insurance company out to look and take photos. Was it the driver's own rig? If so, I hope he has good insurance and they'll agree to pay, and maybe there's some medical on the policy too. Oh and by the way, you really shouldn't be working on the property by yourself, you've been taking too many risks.

A late reply but this was a free truck, almost certainly not registered or insured and only used to and from a neighbor's quarry...... . Betting no cops were called and no insurance claim filed. The cops would have easily written about 5 grand in tickets due to the multiple equipment violations and neither Heath nor the driver would volunteer for that. It is really really rural part of a mostly rural state on an unmaintained township stub of a road. Nope. Also, what state do you live in when an insurance investigator shows up to a rollover where the driver refuses to claim an injury?

Im an owner operator of a triaxle dump truck. Would love to know how his brakes just "failed". His truck must have been in total disrepair and wasnt road worthy putting others on the road at risk. My truck isnt brand new and in fact its an 03 peterbilt. IF one brake is messed up the rest work. If i blew a brake chamber the rest will work. If i lose all air, the emergency spring brakes come on stopping the truck. The only way air brakes usually fail is if you are on a loooong strecth of downgrade and your brakes get overheated and fade. this is clearly not the case. This appears to be an incident of a truck in total disrepair. Good thing he didnt kill you to due to his negligence. Probably why he didnt want you call 911. He knew the police would show up and Dot would have inspected his truck and he would be in hot water

That's likely the case, brakes out of adjustment to where they weren't applying at full travel anymore or so worn out that the S-cams cammed over. I looked at a dump truck in Washington I was thinking of buying once that had only one decent rear brake operating yet the guy was still driving it. There's a good reason trucks like that have to go through a bi-annual government mandated inspection here in British Columbia in order to obtain licence and insurance.

I do hope he goes and gets checked out by a medical professional - he's probably in shock. Not to fault the driver or the company, but this is exactly why there are equipment checklists before *every* job, especially hauling 14 tons of anything on narrow mountain roads. I hope the company carries insurance that will cover this. How are you going to pull that truck out of there? Can you even get a crane in there?

The key point to an experienced driver was that he was having trouble getting the gate to open. The bed was still down so he didn’t raise it to put pressure on the gate. If he was sitting there with his foot on the brakes and dropped below 60 psi the emergency brake would automatically set. However, if enough of the brakes were out of adjustment the remaining brakes would not have been enough to hold the truck on a hill.

Air brakes use air to hold hold them open , if he had no air or lost pressure from using them too much he would have a warning buzzer sounded inside truck. They would have also locked and he wouldn't been able to move. More likely unroadworthy truck

I don't know what kind of driver error is envolved with pressing a brake pedal . Other than maintenance error my brake pads need replacing

+lineflyer OK, I did not see the air tanks for air brakes on the front. And debris covered the rear so did not get a look at them. But, I'm guessing this was an older dump truck that did not have air brakes. Older units are often kept running out in the boondocks.

He had to be in neutral with sucky break pads and couldn't get it into a low gear because of engine rpm too high or low. If he had air he had brakes unless sucky pads because no air the truck won't move

A good tow truck driver who knows their equipment can get that out. They may actually need two pulling from different angles. There is a real science to it. They will have to take into account the gravel pouring out as they pull.
