When I first started collecting books a couple years ago I made a rule for myself that I can have a maximum of 5 unread books on my shelf so I’d need to read at least one of them before I would allow myself to buy a new book. It’s been working surprisingly well and thanks to this method I now own over 200 books and have read all of them :D I know this isn’t exactly helpful to people like Jesse who are already way too deep in but I figured I’d comment it anyway in case someone who is just starting out wants to try it :)

It's definitely a good method. I have something like 63 books in my to be read pile, and i try to read at least two before i buy one. I'm trying to push myself to read three books before i buy one. So I can slowly dig my way through it haha

i've actually got decent self-control with book buying. recently i got a memoir that i had been wanting to read for forever and i immediately sat down and read it and finished it within 3 days. so currently i don't have anything in my tbr atm. but i also go to the library and if it is a book i would want to reread, then ill get it to have on hand in case i want to reread it

I do have self control with book shopping. I am actually one of those people that have a lot of spending rules. One of mine is to get no more than 4 books a month. And if any of those books are above a certain price, it counts as 2. And when you have a rule like that, you do plan out the books you get and when you get them. So I usually walk away with max 2 books. And that is usually during a sale.

I don't screen shot, but I take pictures in the actual bookstore of new books on display or ones I just didn't know existed to remind myself "I'll be back for you later, I promise." The "I have no more room for books" one was especially amusing because one shelf up...oh look, books facing out that if turned the other direction can make room for more books! LOL

I'm one of the person who can go into a bookshop without buying one. XD Sometimes I find to many potential good books and sometimes I find not a single one, even when I go to more that the one big bookstore in the city. I also only ever carry +/- 20 € (the maximal price for the most books where I live), so even when I want to, I simply can not buy more than 1 book. Of the rest I take pictures to order them by my local small bookstore, if I really want them after I have read the book I have bought (and read some books on my tbr, because I doesn't have enough room for books). Plus, I only go to the big bookstore, when I am in the city (which is 30 min away with the train), which can be twice a month with my friends and a doctor's appointment. Or in 4 months not a single time. It's a good regulation for my book buying XD, I'm a very slow reader.

I went to Barnes and noble last week and only bought one book, the only reason was because I only had a $20! 😩 I would have bought more, but I only brought the $20 so I wouldn’t spend a million dollars.

Your forgot to mention the pain of trying to fight back to urge to buy the books sequels as well “I know I haven’t finished the first book….but what if I like it and it ends on a cliffhanger, that way I already have the second, third, forth and fifth book at the ready….and then there’s the prequels and spin off series-“
