Kinda happened to me. Changed meds and it caused wounds. Was healing on their own but my cat licked one. Next thing I know I'm in the hospital getting tests. Doc comes in and asks if I have pets. "Yes a cat," I say. He laughed and said I had an infection that isn't a human one, i.e. my little deathbringer. Thankfully they saved my foot where the wound and lick was, though I KINDA wish they did lop it off. Was gonna salvage it, put it on a chain and when my fiancee would pick an argument I'd say "That's it! I'm putting my foot down!" and throw that on the ground. Unrelated: Two months later a doctor misdiagnosed something, I was in the hospital again, and learned I have a flesh eating bacteria and needed immediate surgery. Unrelated but evidence I have the worst damn luck.

I think it is cultural here in the US because I've heard it many, many times. I think the reason I never believed it is because I've seen dogs repeatedly lick their own wounds and make it a lot worse.

Before the Internet explodes with concern about this, please note that the majority of people suffer no illnesses or consequences from puppy & dog kisses. Millions if not billions of dog owners, trainers, shelter volunteers, vet techs and vets worldwide have been receiving wet, sloppy, kisses & affection from dogs and have remained perfectly healthy. Don't over exaggerate the risks and don't panic. Unfortunately for this lady, probable multiple factors, led to this unfortunate infection, subsequent blood clots, and amputations. I'm sure she received many kisses in the past from her dogs, and maybe even had an open cut or sore, but didn't become infected. Sometimes, it takes the absolute perfect conditions in the body for something like this cascade of symptoms to happen. Good health to all.

This is scary and I know one woman who lost a leg due to an inflammation and one who almost lost it... One of them stepped onto something like a tiny piece of a branch while standing on her otherwise pristine lawn. That's all it took to say goodbye to her leg forever... It turned black at a crazy fast pace and no treatment helped... The other had a swollen leg (don't know the cause, but something apparently insignificant) and since it hurt, she went to a hospital but got turned back with only an antibacterial cream. As you might imagine, it got worse in no time and she tried to get back to the hospital, but they refused her saying that they had already given her a treatment and she just needed to apply it and it shall soon all be fine... She went to a different hospital, and there they told her that she should have come earlier, as it would have been just an hour or two later and she could have suffered an amputation! Lastly, every single time I got scratched by a cat, it caused swelling and a throbbing sensation. I'm so glad it neve escalated beyond that... Just a tiny scratch can still be scary enough!

I also don't ignore any cuts or open wounds I may have. Antibacterial/antiseptic and bandaids are always in supply in my household.

That's why I like cats better. I used to have a big cat that looked just like Sylvester and one day I ate a ham sandwich and forgot to wipe my face after eating it and then I laid down on the sofa and that cat could smell the ham on my lips and he jumped me. He gave me the longest loud licks on face and his tongue felt like sand paper because he was really digging in. I tried not to laugh when he was doing it but eventually I had to stop it and just laugh. I miss that cat.

To be honest, the part about the dog could have been eliminated entirely. The woman’s body went into sepsis, which can be caused by any common bacteria, such as staph. Once the body becomes septic, the infection spreads too fast to be controlled, so it often leads to amputation. This isn’t rare at all. There’s a saying that the greatest medical advancement society has ever experienced is sanitation. This can be prevented by washing your hands.
