Externally, yes; historically, yes.

Gotta admit, as twisted as Pete could get in Goof Troop, there was no denial that he had some love for his family. The facial expressions and sobs he gives when he sees what he believes to be a vision of his kids becoming crooks and gunned down by the cops are honestly a little heart wrenching.

With the Disney villains, you could say it all started with a bear that was later turned into a cat.

Too bad, no one wanted to use that as a headliner for the Disney Company. Although there was that one time in Mickey Mouse Clubhouse where they made an allusion to Pete’s origin as a different species: kzread.info/dash/bejne/kadksZeKp5CcqZs.html

It's amazing that, for a character that's been utilized as much and even predates Disney's studio, Pete is somehow underrated as far as those characters go. He did get some of the harder to find Goof Troop merchandise, and then absolutely no marketing presence until Mickey Mouse Clubhouse and Kingdom Hearts. Even today, most Pete based merch is KH based. He's truly a fascinating character and it's just strange that he's used so much, yet somehow just doesn't seem to carry a presence like the main 5 characters.

Disney has a line of merchandise specifically of villains. Actually, sometimes you can find Pete in there, but usually it's just the big names like Cruella, Maleficent, and Captain Hook. Then again, there are loads of Mickey and CO Disney characters that rarely get featured as merchandise if at all. I'm just happy with the Ducktales reboot, we've seen Scrooge McDuck a lot more recently, even in his older form. Lego Scrooge? You already know that's the first one I bought.

I'd also say that for the longest time until Mickey Mouse Clubhouse, you'd have been hard pressed to find merchandising with Mickey and Co stateside. Much as I'm not a fan of that show or the edutainment model it followed, it did see a massive resurgence of Mickey and Co merch all around, including Pete. But no doubt Japan would have more Pete stuff. They apparently have (or had) pop up boutiques that sell merchandise based on Snoopy's relatives. I barely ever saw any Spike merchandise over here, and they have stuff with Olaf on it. Olaf, Snoopy's brother who barely appeared in anything.

Pete's portrayal in the 3DS game Disney Magical World really caught me off-guard. I assume they decided to tone him down due to the fact that the game was family friendly and little kids would likely play it as well, but Pete was a straight up friend to Mickey and the protagonist, rather than a villain.

The italian comics gave Pete a bunch of relatives aside from Trudy. First came his cousin Plottigat, a mad scientist who often conceived complicated schemes. Then even came two identical nephews, Pierino and Pieretto.

I always thought Pete was a Bulldog. Julius sure does look like Felix. When they had Honey & Bosco guest star on Tiny Toons, they made Bosco look like Oswald instead.

Pete is not a bulldog. bulldogs don't chase mice. it wouldn't make sense if he chased Mickey as a bulldog.

Wait...Pete had a girlfriend before "Goof Troop"? Well, no wonder why Peg didn't take PJ with her, he was mothered by someone else. On the bright side, at least PJ ended up with that awesome Beret Girl. Come to think of it, we had never seen her interactions with Pete which is a shame. I would've loved to see Beret Girl stand up for PJ whenever Pete's being a jerk to him.

As much as I want to not have Extremely Goofy Movie be canon for reasons on how they botched the Goofy/Max subplot (making it feel like that ending from the first movie never happened), I will admit, PJ’s subplot in the sequel was the only thing I liked… that and Brad Garrett was in it. On a different note, I did bring up that PJ (short for Pete Jr, BTW) was around since Bellboy Donald, but he behaved differently back then, being more like his father. Maybe PJ has changed his attitude after getting on Donald’s bad side. The thought of Trudy being PJ’s birth mother doesn’t sound like a bad idea, though.

I feel like Pete married Trudy and then had pj aka Pete Jr and they divorced and married peg

Cat Nip honestly sounds like the villain persona name taken on by a younger character who's suffered a series of tragic heartbreaking losses and was eventually bullied so much by those around him that he became of a super edgy masquerade mercenary who frequently battles the other iconic Disney characters. But ultimately ended up being pushed to the dark side by the main cast unintentionally or carelessly treating him badly only for him to come back to haunt them as an actual threat working under a main villain. But who eventually sees himself and his own pain within those he's hurt and realizes he's become the very Monsterous person he despised. And then he ends up defying the main villains, teams up with the main cast in defeating them, and then goes on to atoning for his misdeeds by saving people in the most badass and edgy ways possible while occasionally running into the same heros from before and teaming up with them on different adventures. And his real name and reason for being bullied so much is probably something real personally awkward he still doesn't like talking about to anyone else except the main cast. Like Katelyn Izabelle Prescott or something because his parents were expecting a girl or something that deals with his tragic backstory or something. Just an idea.😅

Well this looks like an interesting video series. You really went through those older Disney villains thoroughly 😁👍. I’m excited to see you tackle the TV Disney villains in this series, since I watched more Disney shows than movies when I was a child. But I guess I should wait for that 😅, since there are a good amount of the big baddies in the movies. Nice educational video still 😁👍.

Both the X's and that Professor actually has made a few appearances afterwards. One of them had the X's use pal tones and relaxing gas to make everyone nice, all as part of a sinister plan to take over the world. In the end they got a taste of their own medicine and became nice themselves, revaling how to reverse the effects. In another the trio actually were inacting a take over the world scheme at the same time as the Phantom Blot had a similar plan, which lead to Mickey initally thinking they were working together, and also allowing Mickey to effect the computers of both villains with each other's virus, foiling both of them at the same time.

In the comics, Pete also has a cousin called Portis who is a genius scientist often working with Pete.

So technically, “it all started with a bear”

Did anyone notice how in his first appearance, the Mad Doctor is briefly seen clad in a black cloak that looks near-identical to the Phantom Blot's iconic costume?

happy 100th anniversary disney!!! :3 like how pete's dynamic with mickey mouse is like mario with bowser(funny bowser's a better parent to jr. than pete is to pj/while a blessing to him pete didn't go with him would've been really funny if from goofy's hijink's he somehow got pete to go with him too.). ,prince and the pauper/three musketeers is probably him at his most threatening though loved him in kingdom hearts & would love to see his family appear in it alongside max/roxanne. also loved the mad doctor in epic mickey(compared to the short felt like if "dr. wily/eggman was in a disney game.)/franken ollie should've gotten another appearance though his death was rather grisly(wouldn't be surprised if that alone was enough to get it banned alongside mickey basically turning into a precursor of the werehog for sonic.).

from what im aware, petes costume never actually walked around but was just used in a car in the early parades, because his costume didn't properly represent his size in the cartoons compared to everyone else, and only just now got an official walk around costume.

I freaking love Pete so much. For me, Goof Troop is where he really shines. You get to see every side of him, his crookedness, his evilness, his manliness, as well as his stupidity, his loving side, his silliness, and the way he works off of Goofy and Peg is just a blast to watch. Even despite all the awful stuff he does there you can’t help but love him. I really really love Peg too, she’s such a well written character. She is the PERFECT way to give Pete a wife in the way that she’s the only person who’s strong enough to put up with and stand up to him, and the way that she’s the only person who can truly frighten him. Man I wish Disney would use her more… the more Goof Troop I watch the more I’m disappointed she didn’t appear in the movie. (By the way, it was confirmed Peg didn’t divorce him by the creators, she just never showed up) I really love the point you made about him being a perfect rival to Mickey in the way that he’s so flexible and can be put into any situation. I never thought of it like that and it gives me an even bigger appreciation for him.

I personally see Pete as a sort of Disney version of Wario. He's big, brutish, antagonistic, versatile, greedy, funny, and all around just plain mean, but he's more of a goofy cartoonish bad guy, as opposed to the serious, murders-your-whole-family type of bad guy. He wears overalls (Most of the time), has a thriving career as a video game villain, played an oft forgotten role in comics, and is the original basis for the goofy antagonist stereotype. They're also both my favorite characters of their respective franchises, but that's just bias.

Fun fact, the three comic doctors have appeared recently in a IDW Disney Comics and Stories, 3X renamed as Professor Z while X and 2X are now Doctors H and K.

@@ColinLooksBack 4:34: I remember in a Character Commentary for Mickey’s Three Musketeers, they gave us the reverse explanation. Pete said that during his role as the villain in that story, he required a funnel to make it work, which can hurt at times. Taking the commentary into context, I can’t help but feel he had to go through the process of inserting replacement peglegs whenever one of them gets chopped during filming; and he’d probably say “Oh no, a chopped-off pegleg? I don’t want to go through this again.”

The comics in where Trudy appears is often very cute, Pete is still a thief, but he cares alot about Trudy and she for him too, she is also a thief but feom those comics I've read, it is not very often shown, but she always supports Pete.

7:37 That more serious take idea was going to be emphasized by having Bill Farmer, Goofy's VA, do the lines in his natural voice instead of Goofy's. This was a decision by Katzenberg that the rest of the staff vetoed after recording a few sessions.

I used to think the Goof Troop series was a prequel because I saw the movie first. So I believed Peg and Pistol weren't in the movie because they hadn't been created yet.

I also find it a little ironic that in the manga-adpt. of 'Kingdom Hearts', Pete is portrayed as asomewhat sympathetic flunky who clearly has a crush on Maleficent. (Seriously, he almost confesses a few times.) He even rescues her from her castle when it is collapsing, and it's implied that he's reluctant, but going along with the plan out of fear and respect. =)

Wow, I had a few VHS tapes as a kid that had old cartoons on them (never truly realized how old until now) and it had the Mad Doctor short on it amongst a ton of others. Lot of Popeye on there. Edit: Holy crap I always had a memory of Mickey getting his brain put in Pete's body and now I know what the hell that was from!

I hope one of your exceptions will be some Disney afternoon villains like Negaduck, Don Karange, and Magica De Spell.

Ah yes, Pete was the reason why I used to be scared of the police when I was a kid. Bear with me. It was from the 1936 Mickey Mouse cartoon "Moving Day" where Pete was a sheriff. Pete didn't even have gun holstered in that cartoon and he still came across as intimidating, personifying police brutality in the 1930's. Billy Bletcher's delivery on lines like "Open the door!" and him laughing after having struck a match under Donald Duck's bill drove that home. Thankfully I learned that it was something of a caricature from the 1930's.

Pete's can easily play the role of John Wayne Gacy in a cartoon version, they are similar!

You mentioned that talk that Peg divorced Pete. Honestly I would love to see a continuation where Pete wants to put his family back together and *attempts* to be a better man.

it was rly interesting with the Treasure Island adaptation they did with Mickey in the european comics, because you had Pete as Long John Silver which made his relationship with Mickey(as Jim Hopkins, naturally) a bit more complicated in that comic

Very nice video, it is intresting to see the history involving the short films too, a lot of people seems to forget them. Those were cinema too at the time. Funny thing about the gorilla, I saw those cartoons in reverse order, the Gorilla Mystery being dead last when I could find it on youtube. Pete is a intresting character, so many versions and I have never really read any comic, those old ones seems quite intresting. I will enjoy this serie.

I like your description of Pete when compared to Mickey Mouse; just like how Mickey can be placed in just about any situation, whether it be a normal Everyman or an action adventurer or hero, Pete can also be placed i just about any bad guy role, whether it be a minor thug, a scheming mastermind, or just a regular jerk. They truly are the best foils for each other, so it's only fitting that Pete would be Mickey's arch-enemy over the years.

In the 2013 Mickey Mouse series Pete got jealous over Mortimer being Mickey's enemy and it's treat like a break up , like how Gumball git jealous when Rob choice Banana Joe to be his arch enemy
