A Disappearing Career

So much was expected of this player who had enormous potential, but never quite lit up the Theater of Dreams.

Also currently, if ETH plays in a 4-4-2 with Højlund as the primary forward and Martial as a False 9, Martial will work wonders. Martial is the type of player who would have thrived in 90's and 2000's as that was the era of False 9s and No. 10s. Basiclly whah I am saying is that Martial needs someone to run upto defenders head on (which Højöund does), make runs into space to try and get behind the defense (which Højöund does) and someone who can press the centre-backs and keep their attention of him (which Højöund does, again) as Martial needs space and time on the ball. He rarely tries to get behind the defense, but tries to get the ball just outside the penalty box, dribble in and THEN shoot his shot, or play a through ball for someone. This makes him a perfect partner for Højlund, who does everything that Martial doesn't and needs. Players like Martial and Højlund are the classic 2 forward pair of the 90's and early 2000s in a 4-4-2 formation. But unfortunatley for Martial, this is the era of industrial football where the Forward is required to constantly make runs into space (when his team is in possesion of the ball) and press the defense (when his team is not in possesion of the ball). And Martial does not fit this mold and neither is he trying to adapt (by the looks of it).

Those are some good points on what role he could take to be more effective. Maybe he would thrive in a 4-4-2 set up. I like the old fashioned 9 and 11 with those profiles. There’s no doubt he has the ability. I just struggled to believe after this much time he’s only hit solid numbers twice. It’s a bit of a mystery. If he goes to Italy and joins Inter under Inzaghi, I could see him fitting with Lilian Thurman or Lautaro Martinez. But will he score more than 20 goals?

@@campfirefootball I cannot say as I only watch Man Utf matches, so I only know about PL teams 😅. But Martial needs a possession based team with a strong centre forward ahead of him to protect him and give him space and time by taking away the attention of the opposing centre halves. That has been my observation regarding him these past few years.

Bro, going by your accent I will assume that you are either Canadian or American. If that is indeed the case, can you explain why there is a sudden surge of American and Canadian football KZreadrs 😅 ?

Yes I’m American. I can’t speak for the increase in KZreadrs. But what I can say is that there are a lot of people in this country who know the game. They’ve played it and watched it since they were kids. They just talk funny to the British ear.

@@campfirefootball hahaha thanks man ! I am from India btw. Also I was under the impression that football was not popular in USA, so seeing a surge of American KZreadrs focusing on football has been a pleasant surprise.

@@riichobamin7612 It has been growing immensely. I'd say people here assume Cricket is the only sport that matters in India. So it's the same. lol. The other thing is the Messi and Ronaldo era took things to a new level. With stars like that to follow but also grow up with, the game rode a wave here. Man City became THE team to copy as the PL got massive audiences on early Saturday mornings. Yeah it's growing.
