A different approach to Attenuators! Fryette Power Station PS-100 Review

Музыка

I covered a lot of attenuators. In those videos I had a lot of questions about the Fryette Power Station. I now had a chance to take a long look at it and discover its secrets. Luckily Fryette discovered my channel and decided to commission this video! This attenuator is a whole different beast!

  • @Mike_the_Barbarian

    @@RichardReneeRachel No, the PS2 could just go in the final speaker output from any of the de Lisle units. So any of them will work. I have never switched the attenuator switch off that's on mine. Only downside with this setup.. all your amps need to be able to run at the same Ohm output. Same with your speakers. The amps could be 1 ohm and the speakers another ohm but in each group they need to all be the same. I run 16 ohm for everything to keep it easy. My speaker cabs are all Marshall 4x12's with various speakers in them. Only flaw I found with de Lisle speaker selectors is they are sensitive to strong magnetic sources nearby (like a PS2). I got Buzz in the audio when I put the PS2 on top of the de Lisle. I had to move the PS2 a few feet away to get rid of it. My amps dont trigger the de Lisle buzz, just the PS2.

    @@Mike_the_Barbarian Totally figured you’d have to match up ohms. As far as the set up, I’m following but still not quite getting it. Typically output from amps plug into “amp in” on de lisle. Then cabs plug into the speaker jacks. With the attenuator, if you plug the input into one speaker out then where does the attenuator out go? How do you get it to be inline to all of the cabs from any amp?

    Sounds amazing through that cab. What would be even more awesome is a stereo version or a version without the power amp designed to be used with freyettes power amps. Then you could use your stereo fx and use a preamp modeller and or a couple or your amps and it would be amazing. Guess you could add a stereo power amp and use the send fx and make a wet/dry/wer rig.

Remember it is no more than a personal computer that is specialized to be amp/FX rig. The one at that will replace it will 10 times better sounding than today's and be 10 times cheaper. What I've been doing recently, re: the effects, is send a line out signal to my interface for ir's, send the send signal out with my effects in line to my interface, and also mic the cab. The great thing about doing the effects this way is that you can record them separately to another track in your daw which gives you great control in the mix and even allows you to use a different ir for the effects track. Try it out!

I've tried the Helix (and even an old POD) directly line-in and it makes for a great in-the-room experience. I didn't realize the FX loop SEND could be used while the unit is running silent until I watched this video -- I'm looking forward to trying this out as well!

    Would love to see you cover the Rivera Rock Crusher (Original and Recording version). I run the original version into Wall of Sound. There was a point in time where the original Rock Crusher was considered the best attenuator load box on the market. The only shortfall was that it did not do speaker simulation on its own. This is why Rivera released the Rock Crusher Recording version which has speaker simulation. I noticed that neither of these units seem to get any airplay with all the new products that have been released in the last few years. I am wondering how these two units compare to the products you have reviewed to date.

    The rockcrusher recording is a passive load box, with speaker emulation via the 11 band EQ only. Still it works and sounds excellent. I want an fx loop in my valve amp chain without having to buy another amplifier (I can use one I already have if I'm using my tube amp as a preamp this way)

  • @bernardosilva7306

    The fact that the "Line Out" doesn't go through the "FX Loop" is actually genius because it is a known fact that the FX Loop in amps can change it's sound since it is one extra "buffer" (the FX loop buffer) for the signal to go through. So, if you want the FX direct, going from the "Send" has the FX Loop buffer, but, if you don't want that you can actually plug the Line Out to your pedals and have another option. It is actually far more versatile and the signal path is more isolated, which gives the user full control over the gain stages.

  • @FryetteAmps

    @FryetteAmps

    3 жыл бұрын

    Obviously you "get" the concept here, which is great! This is not an oversight. It's intentional to insure best performance. One thing that was not made clear in the video is that the FX loop is entirely passive (send AND return), meaning no buffers to get in the way of the signal. That's why the tape echo Henning described worked so well. That's also why you can use the FX send with the power off and still send signal to an effect input and then on to your DAW, FOH, or whatever. Most people think that if you want to use an effect, you need a loop send and return. This is true in a typical amp, but not necessarily true or necessarily required anywhere else. In the case of the PS FX Return, the idea is to get the effect signal back into the PS to be sent to the PS power amp stage - like you would in an amp. Otherwise, you're free to think OUTSIDE the box :)

    @@FryetteAmps Exactly! I am a proud owner of the PS-2 for years now and I think it is one of the best pieces of gear I ever got. What a lot of people don't understand is that it is actually kind of 3 separate things: a passive reactive load, a passive FX loop and an active tube power amp. You can totally use those pieces separated. Used on my HX Stomp and on my previous Fractal AX8. My current setup it is a Kingsley Maiden (Dumble tube preamp) direct to the PS-2 Line In. It is the best sounding thing ever! :D

    To me it’s well worth the $price, because you can take let’s say a JTM 45 and now have that glorious cranked tone at ANY volume with the added bonus of a second master volume for a clean volume boost for solos AND a effects loop to add delays and reverbs on a distorted amp that would sound like crap usually. I sold my JTM 45 because it just wasn’t giggable for me because of these things, now it would be the perfect gig amp.

I have a Two Notes Torpedo Live which worked great for attenuating my 5150 or my 100W Laney AOR Pro Tube Lead (best amp ever built) and letting me record into my DAW, but I could never recreate my real world setup which is the 5150 or Laney into a 90's Randall 4x12 with the original Jaguars. I do understand this extra extra features which are deffeintely outstanding, but how good is just the reload side? And have you ever tried the Iron Man from Tone King? If yes does it sound simular? or better? I found out for me that the reload makes a big difference if you are doing captures in the Quad cortex or any other profiler (or whatever) in the digital domain. Of course another way would be to capture the whole signal chain with the mic mic pre box etc.... - but this is than of course not as practical....

    FX out of the DI would be essential for me. I have the PS-2 and use it to power my pedal board with a KSR Ceres Preamp and Darksun delay/reverb pedal. I would use the PowerStation to power stage sound and us DI to front of house. I don't understand having DI that is un usable when you would have to use an IR in the DAW to record anyway or run to a mixer without cab sim. Just doesn't make much since. Still the best bang for buck on the market especial for a tube driven power amp with several features that are not available anywhere else. But for real. No FX or cab sim out of the DI is useless in a live setting without other external IR boxes. FYI I plug my pedalboard into the FX return and it sounds way more 3d and crystal clear that way.

    It's understandable, that you may not see why the Line Out was configured the way it is. That is related to the primary purpose and reason the product was created. The simple answer is, because it would compromise the overall performance of the primary utility of this specific product. If we had created the product as a standalone onstage monitor power amp primarily for use with preamps and pedals, it would probably have that feature. The complaint then might be "A reactive load would be essential for me. I don't understand why they didn't include that feature so I could use a head with it".

The PS-2 was used as a test platform. Several other power amps were also evaluated, but the PS-2 was the go to development platform, mainly because it was so convenient. Synergy often uses the amp makers schematic to do it for them, which the original designer then evaluates and approves. The fact that we were directly involved in the design architecture, gives us a little better insight as to the interaction between the module and base unit and how to optimize our modules performance with regard to frequency response, noise and dynamics.

  • @FryetteAmps

    @FryetteAmps

    You could as long as you maintain the recommended load on the speaker output. A 1W amp connected to a speaker would be low volume enough to get away with that as long as the amp has a Line Out. The BH amp in the vid does not offer a Line Out, but it does have multiple speaker output jacks. If no Line Out is provided, you can fashion a DIY divider network, or in the case of a very low power amp like the BH, connect one of the extra the speaker outputs directly to the Line In - again, you must keep the speaker connected.

    Class A and AB can be tube or transistor based. Class D is a whole different beast that involves alternating between two voltages of equal magnitude but opposite polarity (for example, a +10V line and a -10V line, relative to ground) and then using an analogue filter to turn that output back into a smooth waveform, and this switching tends to happen at very high frequencies which are probably too fast for tubes. The thing about needing tubes on the output is nonsense though, since if the loadbox is capturing the signal properly, you would want the output stage to simply transfer the signal to the cab, and anyone who is not an idiot knows that transistors are far superior to tubes when the goal is accurate reproduction of a signal.

    The 5150 literature and spec sheets claim 120 watts of output power. Like Mesa and many other companies, they do not state how much distortion is allowed to achieve that 120W figure. We have tested some of the most well known 100W amps using the same test procedure. At 8 ohms with a default 5% distortion figure, the 5150 delivers 72WRMS into an 8 ohm load. This is pretty common among many mass production amp producers. It is customary and convenient for amp manufactures to let the end user assume "4 tubes = 100W' and state output power specs with no distortion percentage. This allows them to justify a claim of "120W" without revealing under which conditions. Even so, you are safe since the PS-2 and PS-100 can absorb up to 200W continuously regardless of distortion percentage.
