If they did they just made a blunder and lost the win just like how patzers stalemate K+Q vs K. The rules shouldn't arbitrarily come in and protect you from one edge case (K+R vs K+N) versus another edge case (K+Q vs K).

The point is they don't wanna waste time, so that's why they see a "give up" as a win. But they should change the rule to that you lose, because you have yourself to blame for giving up.
i remember it happened to magnus and alireza otb.. alireza raged and complained to the arbiter i believe..

That wasn't about the rule per se, it was over a stipulation that says if a player can't get checkmate, but can if the other player helps him, for example, deliberately moves his king to the corner of the board, it is still considered a potential checkmate, so it is a loss not a draw.

I feel like a draw is fair in this position. But technically you could still mate.
helpful video 👏
I was also confused when I lost a game similar to this due to time. I think I had a pawn and the opponent a knight. My logic was that, if the king can't make any moves, then he can be killed by the other piece regardless (imagine white king and rook doesn't move at all and black have infinite moves, he can of course kill the king with the knight). Guess I was wrong.
woah didnt expect i would learn any new difference.. but this is actually a great observation. btw, as lichess follows FIDE, it is a win for white if it's is played OTB? as in a fide or other tournament?
@thechessnerd

In a FIDE tournament this would be a win for white, yes. in USCF tournament that is rated FIDE you would have to check with the organizer before the blitz/classical tournament.
It s funnier with king bishop vs king bishop of opposite colors :)
Now i know thank you!!
I wondered this. I thought it was a glitch now I get it thx.
Same happened at Magnus vs Alireza
There is also one more diffrence you can do any numbers of puzzles without even joining any membership and for that you will have to pay but in lichess you can do countless of puzzles for free
Alirezah is so hardworking Plays tournaments , fashion designer and makes youtube shorts explaining stuff
It is a win because it is still can be checkmate , position example : black king on a1 and black rook on b1 and white king on a3 and night on c2 it is a checkmate
I think the uscf rule is better for the fast time controles.
Lichess changed now because I remember it happened to me once in lichess. My opponent was winning with an extra rook against me ( I only had a king) and their time ran out. But it was still a draw.
