A Deeper Dive Into the Coastal Grandma Style Aesthetic

In today's video I'm sharing how we can use the coastal grandma style trend to help us establish some style goals for ourselves. We don't need to follow this trend. We can be trendsetters! But first let's learn a few lessons from the costume designers who actually created these signature looks.
This video is a little different from others I've posted. We're taking a deeper dive into a style concept, so I don't have a lot of outfits to share or even many photos. I realize it's different, but sometimes I think it's important to know the "whys" and not just the "whats" and "hows."
Let me know if you like this kind of video and if there are other topics you'd like for me to take a DEEPER DIVE into.

I have never commented on a video before. I am a 64 year old grandmother. I have been so inspired by your comments. All natural linen and cotton make me happy and I am tired of trying so hard to keep up with the younger generation. It is time to appreciate where I am in life and just be comfortable in my own skin. Thank you for your insightful comments!

My Grandma is a coastal Grandmother, an Australian one. I’ll be copying her for the rest of my life! Sometimes we’re the ones trying to keep up with you 💕 My other Grandma, who was much older than you, said the last 10 years of her life were probably her best years so I hope you can find the same happiness and appreciation in your stage of life that she did in her 80s.

Love this style!! Discovered this when my husband was very sick and we thought he was dying earlier this year. I cared for him at home. Provided total care. Mourned for him and spent time remembering our 53 years together and the life we had through the gifts of our Lord, Jesus Christ. Tried to think of what life would be without this special man in my life. With God's mercy and through much prayer he is us alive and getting better every day ❤️. But during this stressful time I began to lose my hair. Not just a few strands but handfuls. My vacuum cleaner and my Shark robo cleaner had so much hair wrapped in the rushes they were not cleaning well.. and they were not our dog or cat's hair. My daughter graciously cut my hair..It was very very short with large areas of no hair BUT I didn't care. I had previously purchased many wigs but chose not to wear them. I didn't want to waste previous time with my husband. I just wanted to wash my hair and air dry it and let it be what it would be. I love linen, I love cashmere and I don't mind if I am wrinkled. I have stopped doing lots of makeup ..no mascara, no liner, no heavy foundation. . just some face cream, a little eyebrow pencil and soft shade of lipstick. Then I am ready for the day.

I’m not a Coastal Grandma, I’m a Southern Appalachia Grandma and this video definitely resonated with me! I stopped colorIng and straightening my hair after doing one for 25 yrs and the other for 40!! I stopped wearing lots of jewelry, lots of makeup, and lots of heels lol. I feel more “me” than I ever have, and that authenticity feels like going outside on the first beautiful Spring day after a long, hard Winter.

I was able to become a homemaker in my late 30's (no more outfits, no more leaving the house every day), and within 10 years, I had developed this casual look. It takes a while to give up trying to be the center of attention, because from the 1980's, we were taught to 'DRESS FOR SUCCESS' and, of course, 'fake it till ya make it'. Now, I'm 55 years into this life of mine, and I have gone from wearing business clothes to wearing nothing but sweat pants and Tshirts and now, once again, I'm into looking casual and stylish, which has a name- the coastal grandma. I'M NOT A GRANDA MA- I never had children, but I'm embracing this style and I literally already have all of these clothes in my closets! I want to THANK KAY for this video, because you, Kay, have said everything that needed to be said about this newest concept of dressing. Explaining the movies, the wardrobe designers goals and the concept of dressing to set a tone to exemplify a profile for a person REALLY explained WHY we might want to try this wardrobe. Thank You!

Finally, a style that reflects a mature woman. The over 50 woman is the most populous category, but the fashion industry still focuses on young women (teens and 20s). I think it’s because fast fashion makes them more money and us older women don’t do fast fashion.

This video goes so beyond the particular catchy “coastal grandma” trend of the minute and resonates with me right now as I try to cull my wardrobe into something that reflects my life now. I was born on the East coast, lived in FL during early adult years, spent a majority of my years in the Midwest and now find myself in Georgia. My wardrobe has snippets of all of these places and doesn’t exactly work for my current life as a retiree. The points that you discuss are really going to help me evaluate each piece in my wardrobe and determine if it is truly reflective of me now and of the lifestyle going forward. I think that your insight reflected in this video is one of the best videos I’ve seen on KZread. Thanks so much for sharing your wisdom and insight.

I grew up in a suburb just 20 miles from Boston. I’m 62 and believe my location influenced my style. My style has always included a smart-tailored blazer that can be worn with nice jeans and a nice pair of leather loafers. I love button down blouses, suede Oxford shoes, and taylor made looking clothes. I like the equestrian feel of some pieces like black leather boots. I love simple gold jewelry. I combine pieces that look smart together. Leisure and relaxed yet smart.

Bonjour! I'd never heard of the term "coastal grandma" before and really enjoyed this video. I'm a French grandmother and we have this style in France too, or a close version of it. I love it and it's actually my stylet :) However, it makes me a bit sad that the term "coastal grandma" excludes women who are not mothers or do not have grandchildren, even though they can have wonderful personalities like the characters from the movies you mentioned: they have wisdom, experience, self-confidence, are supportive of their friends and relatives. Even if they don't have children or grandchildren (and perhaps they tried), they still offer so much to their private circle and community. And the way they dress, their style, can be just like what you describe and inspire others. :)

Even though we might not actually be a mother or grandmother, we can be a positive influence in someone's life because we have that level of maturity that only comes with age and experience. And I've always admired French women because they have that innate sense of style that comes with life's experiences and they never try to be anything but what they are - timeless and classic!

I do like the Coastal Grandma style, the clothing and the furnishings, (and those movies). Yesterday at my club (where I work out everyday) a friend said to me that her husband can always tell an older women because their knees are wrinkly. So she does not wear shorts. I was just incredulous about that. I live in New England and in the Summer it is hot and humid. Even though I am 68, I am wearing shorts... right now. I do not care what some older gent says about our legs. This is what 68 looks like and I fine with that. I do my best to exercise and eat right, but I will be darn if I hide myself or my knees away from the world. Geeze..... LOL Anyway, Thanks Kay. Lots of food for thought.

I love the Coastal Grandmother style. I grew up on Long Island, NY, near the Atlantic Ocean, and went to camp on a lake in Vermont. At camp we wore white blouses and navy shorts, with navy blazers on Sunday for church. Navy and white is still my style. I have added gray, taupe, and khaki as neutrals, with light blue, pink, and soft green as colors which go well with my pure white hair. (I do like brown but it doesn't look good on me any more.) I have started to clean out my closet of random outfits and currate a wardrobe which reflects who I am. Thank you, Kay, for your inspiring and thought provoking videos and blog posts.

She always looks put together and cool as we live here on the Texas coast. She does wear a lot of linen and loose fitting things and she has the figure that she can do that. She is 76. I am 74 and I do not have the figure for that kind of style but I do want to have a similar style that works with my figure. Seems like pants is where I have the biggest problem. I think more brands are making linen pants these days, so I’m sure there are some that would work for you. Take your sister shopping with you and get her to help you try some new things. Take photos in the fitting room with your phone. Then leave everything there on hold and go get something to drink. Sit and look over the photos together. You will be surprised at how much more you like some things that you thought you didn’t look good in. Try places like Soft Surroundings, Chico’s and JJill. If you want to wear this style I know you absolutely can. 💕

This video really resonated with me and finally gave a name to my style esthetic - classical, well fitting clothing with just a zip of inspiration from some of the current trends! I have things in my closet that are well over 30years old that still fit(!) And are classics that never go out of style like blazers, trench coats, round toe booties and animal prints that I have intermixed with all my current stuff. I love shopping at Chicos, Talbot's and Chadwicks plus shop the discount stores like Marshalls and thrift stores, too. Thank you, Kay, for showing us that we can be who we really are without being matronly or like an old fuddy duddy!

Thanks for sharing. It’s the beautiful breathable fabrics that I gravitate to. As we age, comfort seems much more of a priority. I live near the southeast coast, where it’s hot or hotter, humidity is intense, and finding breathable fabrics with a smart yet simple style is a priority. If only manufacturers could offer more affordable choices. I gravitate towards resale items for those vintage quality natural fiber option.

Good morning Kay! Thank you for this deep dive content into learning more about the coastal grandma style even though we’re not all mothers or grandmothers. The aesthetic of it is still casual and relaxing at our age. We still have our own story to tell. You always look beautiful no matter what you’re wearing! I appreciate you! 💕

Thank you for your site. Love the information you have shared. I'm 75 years old and have learned over the years I don't have to wear what others say is trendy or acceptable in their eyes. My mother was a young woman in the 1940s and she taught me how to have several basic outfits using separates. She also said accent accessories are key to making outfits special. I have subscribed to your site here and signed up for the emails. Thank you, again, for the great ideas.

I have to tell you, that you had a Very Important message with this video. I am turning 70 and I have been “ruminating” over many of these issues you talked about. Basically, this Is My Time. I’m ready to let the world know that , this is who I am, and I’m proud to be me. Thank you so much for this video, and I think women my age are possibly going to get a new appreciation from the world. We don’t Need it, but it’s past time that the world started honoring wisdom and agin* with confidence and grace. Great video and great thoughts to send out to other women! Thank you!

I hope women your age do get more appreciation! I absolutely love my Grandparents, my Mum’s Mum is the last one of them left so I really value our time together. There’s also some single women and women who don’t have children that are a similar age that I really look up to. They always brighten my day! I’m only in my 20s, but the time I’ve spent with older women has been extremely valuable to me. I’m sure there’s people who feel the same about you, even if they’re too shy to say it 💕 I’ll have to make sure I tell the women I know!

Then years & years later and I'm now 64, I self taught myself as a Digital Graphic designer online with my own Shop of apparel and Home Goods! Only that I'm alone, so I don't get any accolades? But I'm proud of my self and what I've created.🌸⚘️Thank you for your inspirational Channel.
