    The only thing missing from this is how there’s a surprising amount of IVE self-referencing in their lyrics, referencing the Sailor Moon live action series and Precure influence on the MV story :0 I’ve not watched a lot of Precure, but the evil IVE doppelgängers and switch to physical fighting stunts totally pushed it to the front of my mind I’m not sure who directed the MV or costuming but I hope they’ll release some kind of concept bible someday 😖 it would have been so cool to sell with the physical disc

    Damn it now I’m emotional too lol. I have a sailor moon inspired tattoo as well, I was born in ‘93 so I literally grew up to that anime. As soon as I saw the Switch promo, I was SO HYPE and I immediately saw the vision. Also love that Rei, the Japanese member, got to play the “main character” in this interpretation. I now feel like that’s exactly why she wasn’t just given the role of Rei bc if I was a creative director, my lazy ass would have taken that bait lmao. Also also love that my Ive bias Wonnie plays the role of my sailor bias Makoto. We’re both the tallest in our friend group with stunningly electric personalities so it just makes sense to me 😌⚡️💖

    Ooh, now I need to know what other magical girls media you have consumed (japanese or otherwise). In my case, my first magical girls story was Pichi Pichi Pitch (Mermaid princesses transforms into magical girls and use the power of music and their voices to defeat bad guys. It was super popular in Spain and I could sing you most of the songs without even looking). Then Winx (Italian show about a group of girls who learn how to be fairies. Aisha/Layla is my favorite and a great example of how to add a new main character after the first season. The first three seasons are solid, watch the first movie next and don't watch the rest). Though I've consumed more stuff (like Kamikaze Kaito Jeanne), my personal favorite is Puella Magi Madoka Magica, it's such an amazing show and I fall more in love with it everytime Ive rewatched it, specially Rebellion

    The amount of sailor moon refrences went over my head. Prolly coz Sailor Moon was out when I wasn't even born and the Crystal reboot cams out when I was pretty young, and also the fact that where I live Animes like Sailor Moon aren't common. Animes like Doraemon, Shin Chan and Kiteretsu are the ones that are on T.V. I can't even check it out now because I'll have school in one week 😭 This is really overthinking K-pop because I definitely didn't see many of these especially the disappearing wings at the end. This is enough motivation to watch any M/V 2 to 3 times to find LOOOOOOOOORE. I love this video sm! This and the Baddie theory are the best videos in my opinion. All your videos are amazing but these 2 are just the best ❤❤

    I was so looking forward to this and you really delivered, another amazing video 😍! I am in a pretty weird place, because I'm a huge magical girls' fan, but I've never actually watched or read Sailor Moon, I'm more of a Winx kinda guy, but I appreciate this video all the more, because I would've never found out and identified all of the symbolism. I find it pretty interesting that Rei and Gauel seemed to be the focus of the MV, but Wonyoung was the one creating a wand out of thin air, even though we never see it again, that's pretty interesting. Honestly I think if Rei portrayed Rei, it would be a bit too much, but I might just be biased, because my girl really rocks those pigtails. And finally I had no idea the wings from their hair disappeared in the end, so I misread the ending as a whole, very interesting attention to detail, you really outdid yourself in analyzing that 🥰.

    I'm so glad you still enjoyed it even as someone with no prior exposure to Sailor Moon! Unfortunately, I have had zero exposure to Winx because it didn't come out until I was in college, so I was way too old for its target audience. @nayeonchantix did an episode about Winx Club-coded kpop, though, so definitely check that out if you haven't already seen it!

    @@CatNagTaylorsVersion The most successful anime in terms of viewership are indeed the long-running adaptations of famous manga series, but downplaying the importance of cult classics such as Eva is very short-sighted. Anime wouldn't be where it is today if it weren't for fansubbers, then Adultswim, then Crunchyroll... promoting the more 'adult' stuff to US audiences, and leading to the current status of anime in most of the world. Also Eva's impact on the anime industry shouldn't be underestimated, it was the first big TV anime that was clearly targeting an adult audience, airing in prime time and garnering huge success. There's a very clear "before Eva" and "after Eva" when it comes to the production side, the show simply opened the door for adult anime on Japanese TV and thus directly changed the way the anime industry operates. Something being the most successful with general audiences doesn't make it "iconic", among the shows you listed only Sailor Moon and Death Note are in any way rewatchable, because the others are absolutely bloated with filler. Death Note is a faithful adaptation of a manga that's not overly long, and Sailor Moon manages to remain interesting throughout its run because the directing is effectively brilliant (Ikuhara's next show, Utena, went on to become one of the cult classics). I'm an old hag who grew up watching anime on French TV in the 80s, but the reason why I still watch anime in my 40s, is thanks to Eva airing back in 1995-1996. Because Eva allowed the other cult classics of the second half of the 90s to exist, and those are the shows I'll go back to if I'm feeling like watching old stuff, rather than the shows I watched as a kid on French TV. But hey, I'm not a nostalgic person to begin with, if I was I would listen to 90s rock on the daily, not kpop ^^;
