At first I didn’t get this ship, but hearing you read out the scene where it all started made me actually understand why people would get so attached to it. It added a bit more story to it and gave it a new context that’s really sweet. At first I thought their relationship would be full of conflict and stuff, but it’s actually about two heartbroken people finding love together one fateful night. I’m actually kinda intrigued now!

This ship and dynamic is just brilliant. The way they both have their hearts broken, very differently (Twilight unable to find love and Mordecai being rejected by his very own love, Margaret) they are similar but not entirely. They understand eachother. They complete eachother. They NEED eachother.

This channel for me as an outsider of depicted internet culture is basically "nature is fascinating" but for fandoms.

Yep, I remember seeing this way back in my early days in the MLP fandom (I was in college when the "brony" fanbase was taking off). Back then it was more of a "fandom in-joke" among just MLP fans, but eventually it became an ironic meme elsewhere, and almost a decade later it's bigger than it ever was.

I had never heard of the fanfic before but from the little blurbs you read the writing is pretty solid, especially for something written by a kid. Honestly I kinda miss the days of "cringy," massive crossover fics, I had a lot of fun writing some of my own.

I've been following Cartuneslover for years, it's crazy to see what gets picked up and what doesn't by the internet and its trends. Despite not even being interested in the ship I joined the group in 2013 and watching it evolve has been absolutely nuts, in a very good way.

Her talking about Earthworm Zim fic Me: Holy shit, so that wasn't a fever dream I had when I was 13!

Deviant art was a WILD time back in the early 2010’s. The things I saw that were made out of that era were so strange. The ships between characters on shows totally different from one another, and game franchises that had nothing to do with each other, mixed with people discovering weird kinks, kids just discovering how to draw, and those who were just hopeless romantics with a wild imagination. All of that spawned the most insane art I’ve ever seen. I had to leave that site a few years ago due to inactivity, but the artists on that site can get really creative and are super talented if they put their mind to it

My friend and I used to play a game around this time where we'd go Newest and flip through the pages of recently-submitted art, about 24 per page. If we found a page without any MLP, Homestuck, or Sonic fanart, we won the game. I think we won maybe twice. Eventually we added Lion King to the mix because that was starting to become totally ubiquitous for some reason. Of course, the real prize was the completely bizarre and hilarious fanart we found along the way.

@@RisingSunfish Oh geez, yep, going down memory lane, there was nothing but MLP, Homestuck, Sonic art, and the Lion King back then. But it was mostly the lion king that I saw people using bases or recoloring Kira.

My favourite thing about the Mordetwi meme is that a lot of artists/animators have put a lot of effort into their recreations. A crack ship this nonsensical shouldn't inspire actual talent but it does. Edit: thank you so much for reaching out to the writer of the fanfic because I honestly could not figure out what the dynamic between the two characters would be or why the thought had even crossed the writer's mind

From my own experiences growing up in early 00s internet, the story behind this checks out with how secular communities of weird little kids function. I can confirm that this was passed around in around 2016-18ish! For me, i found the airplanes image from a solar sands video of "browsing deviantart". unfortunately, i think the video is now lost to time since he deleted a lot of his old deviantart videos.

I honestly think there's two kinds of crack ships: 1. The type that's just there for laughs that would never work but are still great to have fun with. 2. The ones where they would never ever meet in cannon but still are interesting and fun to think about, most tend to even work if you show how.

mordetwi has been a meme since like 2014

I have a lot to say here (positive though, since I'm a lover not a fighter) first, the crude art reminds me of my own art style as a kid, I loved to draw things like people and animals. Second, I really loved late 2000's and early 2010 music. Third, as a young teen, I made the most bizarre fictional couples and people were afraid of me because of it. (I made some strange art choices as I used to post things on Deviantart back in 2015)

Hello there!! I drew the art at 10:36 ! I'm really surprised how it appeared on this video and I wouldn't have found out if my friend didn't send it to me! I didn't know the ship had such a following and only drew it for the trend and to see if I could still draw ponies HAHAHA mordecai was a plus. You definitely weren't imagining that MordeTwi drawing going around 2017 Tumblr because I remember that, too. I did a redraw and an additional piece of fanart for the ship back then, it was being spread around as a meme and in the MLP fandom.

I recommend the new mordetwi animation/cover of Somebody That I Used To Know. The artist (Makaryo) payed such close attention to detail when you watch it side by side with the original music video and it's amazing

You know, I never thought I liked makeup *this* over the top (okay not this video, it's probably one of the most "quiet" her makeup has ever been but you know what I mean) as much as I do now, she definitely proved me wrong. Her makeup is absolutely gorgeous everytime and that's fascinating, plus it must take so god damn long to apply, just how ?

The fact that people think Twilight would want Mordecai's emotionally immature ass. She on that grind set. 😤.

I think I saw someone on Twitter claiming to be the original artist of the Mordetwi picture. They said they were a kid at the time and mainly made the picture because they thought they'd get some attention and popularity if they did. Which I mean, I guess wish granted, though probably not in the way they were expecting lol.

I didn’t have this *exact* thing happen to me… but when I was like 10 I took the strangest picture of some of my toys posing together, and I somehow found someone’s old Facebook post with that photo I had taken, with the caption “lol what the hell” and I’ve no clue how they even found it cause I don’t remember posting it. It was like, a plushie (forgot what exact plushie it was though), with a bunch of MLP figures standing on those miniature finger skateboards surrounding the doll. It was funny lol. But still creeped out wondering how some rando online got that picture of mine 😕

You are not alone. I definitely remember this meme being passed around a bit before 2020 around 2018 and 2019. I first saw it around then posted as memes on discord servers.

Honestly crossover ships being separate from shipping drama is my favourite thing about them. The way shipping culture has moved steadily from "I like these two characters together" to "I think these two characters should be together in canon" in terms of discourse is kind of annoying, and the way crossover shipping sidesteps the issue because everyone knows they'll never really be together is part of what makes them so appealing for me.

I remember meming about this back in 2015-2017 a few times. Seeing it as “cringe” and what have you. Now I unironically love it and all it stands for.

It was definitely around circa 2017-2020. I remember seeing a redraw of it for a ship popular in one of my fandoms back in 2019 - 2020

Reminds me so much of Non/Disney . A group that ships Disney characters with other franchises or other Disney characters but instead of just art, there is so so much editing that it’s honestly impressive. Recently I got a video in my recommended that was a Non/Disney mep. (Multi Editor Project), they are still growing bigger and it’s a nice rabbit hole to go down. It all started with Jelsa (Jack Frost x Elsa) but they don’t only do ships, they love to do crossovers too. The thing that really stands out is how well they edit things together to make it look like real footage.

Samd here, i was part of both MLP and Regular show fandoms in DA back in 2012-2014, i always knew ships like these existed and i was like "meh". I dont know why people are so hyped about it now
