Put simply, Detectorists is absolutely wonderful on all levels: the writing, the directing, the acting, the characters (there are no bad characters, even the bad guys are good guys) the whole thing has a laid back vibe to it; during lockdown (and I know this sounds a little sad) I watched all three series around half a dozen times and was elated to discover a Christmas 2022 special was on the cards. I'd love a fourth series, I really would, because there's something spiritual, something calming, it's a joy to watch and it really makes me feel good.

During lockdown wandering around an empty field on your own with a metal detector was against the rules, think about how stupid that was, we must never forget what they did to the world population. There never was an "emergency", yet many people are still believers, but there IS an ongoing campaign to remove freedoms and control every aspect of our lives. " Get the coil to the soil" while you still can.......

I agree. When I first laid eyes upon the 2 antagonists, I immediately thought...Simon and Garfunkel and when they ever played a few bars of their music, I cracked up! The writing is so clever. I'm trying to find the 75 minute "final" episode after it was decided not to have a 4th season. Would you know where I can find it?

I think there is plenty of scope for a 4th 5th and 6th series. It would be cool to see more of the other characters too. The one character i felt a bit sorry for was Sophie.Certainly didn't deserve that pint over her head :)

The most beautiful programme on TV. Wonderful arc of story, driven along by a brilliant script. Superbly cast. Inspired acting. Apparently effortless direction. A hymn to humanity and nature. I was lucky enough to spend a day with the crew and cast filming on the Christmas special. Mackenzie was nothing like I expected, a real down to earth chap and I spent 20 minutes chatting to him about the process of writing it and producing it. I told him how my other half was sceptical about it but after one episode was totally hooked because of his amazing writing. He was truly appreciative of the reception the programs have been given. At the end of the day I was even officially given a couple of props from the filming!

The perfect show for our troubled times. An escapist antidote to the silliness of our politics and economic situation. Everything about it is good - scripts, cast, location, pace, music and not forgetting the beautiful B roll of wildlife. A celebration of quirky Britishness. I'd love a Detectorists film but I fear it would be taken over by awful American filmmakers and therefore lose its gentle qualities.

I'm from Maidenhead, UK but have been living in Boise, ID in the USA for almost a decade now. Every time I feel homesick, I put on an episode of Detectorists and it transports me right back. Such a warm, well written and shot programme.
For those that haven't given this series a look yet, do so, it is wonderful. The directing and casting excellent. The story lines are beautifully written poignant and funny. We all have our individual reason why a given thing appeals to us, for me what shines through is Mackenzie's humility, both his real life character, the character he plays and those he has cast. The above footage reinforces that, but it was evident from the first minutes of episode one. This like a classic novel will be returned to often.. Thank you.
@Paversongs

I discovered this series by accident. It completely flew under the radar in the beginning, but I absolutely love it. From all of the characters to the theme tune. It is pure brilliance. Mackenzie and the team should do their dance because this is 24-carat gold.

Oh yes. I forgot to mention the theme tune. It's a perfect fit for the show, and really quite lovely.
I have been detecting on and off for 30 years plus. This little series of adventures are so closer to the truth than non detectorists probably realise. Just wish i could find something worth mentioning....Wonderful stuff ;0)
Understated comedy perfection. The Exec Producer summed up Detectorists perfectly - the characters aren't yobs, aristocrats, careerists, geniuses, or stupid - just decent people. I'd guess most viewers have most, if not all, of these characteristics. I think that's why it's so popular.
Detectorist has been one of the most refreshing, amusing, honest, clean programmes. I have loved watching the series and have watched it twice. I love the characters and the brilliant script.

I love Worzel too, and feel it's very much 'of a piece' with Detectorists. The lingering shots of wildlife, the perfect evocation of a lazy English summer, and, as you say, the feeling that behind the sunshine and laughter, there's something of medieval England and 'the old magic' hanging around to give it a slightly sinister edge. Did you clock the shot of Lance's car in Worzel?

A beautifully writen and acted series showing how a simple life can be so gratifying and take you places you never dreamed of. Life really doesnt have to be 100 miles an hour to be rewarding. Frienships people, a happy life is all about friendships.

Louise you summed it up , it is the simplicity of the characters lives doing not very much in their lives that really works. The show requires no nastiness no sex no violence but I find it a real treat. The characters are all believable and the lead two are absolutely perfect for their roles. Roger
I find it impossible to state why in a way that a critic would, but I just want to register that I loved these series and am a huge fan of Mackenzie in the roles he has played and the genius of his writing. I so love this program. Everyone is fantastic. Can't help but look forward to Sheila's performances too.
I love the character Sheila, such a sweetheart. The whole show is just so good, I wish there was more tv like this show.
Lines such as Sheila's in the pub garden can really grab your heart, and pull. And in another scene, there is softly, lyrically comical genius like "I'm thirty five." "Years of age!?" in the same show. It's astonishing.
A superb show an absolute treasure

It was such a relatable series ! Hopeful , lowkey and down to earth , always growing, evolving and moving up !

I know people who don't get the humour! Strange! Love the feeling that ancient history is just peeping around the corner. And the last 15 mins or so!! Genius!
On tonight BBC2 at 10.00pm. Watched them all. I will watch it in my warm bed, which for me is a just a relaxing way of enjoying the quality of it with the Suffolk countryside to boot. Quality writing and acting. Superb.
This series is on par with gone fishing by mortimer and whitehouse. And I think what it really hammers home is the beauty that we seem to have lost in the simplicity of genteel and wholesome hobbies like metal detecting, fishing etc

The nicest series that I have ever watched.
I discovered Detectorists just after s1 began, have liked Toby Jones' work. After 1ep I was absolutely hooked. Its best thing that's been on tv (as has also been Mac's revival of Worzel Gummidge ' - much better than the Pertwee era version). Have been trying to get friends and family to watch it. Have had mixed reviews but it's such a beautiful show. And as someone who has a BA + MA in History and been out detectoring many years ago when growing up living on the Isle of Wight and during my time at Durham Uni, I can relate to it. Mac is a genius and the casting is superb
I’m going to have to watch it all again. Looking forward to seeing Toby in Mr Bates in January.
Great video. I have worked on the opposite kind of shows to this. I was an archaeologist on various digs that were featured in documentaries. There was always a bit about the detectorists on site.
MC is an actual metal detectorist himself in real life.

In our increasingly strange world, this is brilliant, grounding stuff!!!
Really love the show and it was great to see the characters thank you for making this video
I saw this show the first year it was out and I loved it! I didn't want it to end, but I also absolutely loved the ending. I had only ever seen Mackenzie Crook in Pirates of the Caribbean, and I'm not sure I had ever seen Toby Smith. They weer both perfect for their parts and then to find out the Mackenzie Crook wrote the story !! What a bonus. I think I watched it on Acorn in the US and I no longer have than channel.... I'll search Britbox, Netflix, Prime and see if I can find it anywhere. I'd love to watch it again.
Didn't notice it at first then found it on iPlayer and binge watched it all, wasn't aware McKenzie wrote it.We want more !!!

Really great show hope it comes back for another series soon very funny and sad at the same time.
Brilliant series, beautifully scripted and acted. Gerard Horan is perfect as Terry - admired his work since first seeing him in The Singing Detetctive all those years ago. All the cast are great in their roles.
Detectorists is a fantastically whimsical place to escape to - I love it and its the best comedy on TV - even the theme from Johnny is calming and guides you in to events in a warm meadow in England - love it.
Wonderful really enjoyed all the series and was so pleased to see we had a Christmas Special. Have watched them all again and never get fed up with it.

Absolutely loved this show. So, so good ❤
Love this show. Wonderful characters.
The best show on TV....period!
Just love these series' nice gentle pace and escape from the world. Naive maybe but I would love to live like this.
Since getting to the end of series 3, I have been watching one video after the other about the show. How it was made, how it was received, and will there be a series 4? I knew from the start of series 2 that I was going to be bereft when I'd seen the last episode, and I was. The acting is so good, and the characters are sympathetic. I grew up in Essex and explored Suffolk and Norfolk most weekends racing motocross bikes (we called it scrambles back then). I have discovered, and been amazed by, finding that is Simon Farnaby's real hair - I'd assumed it was a wig to make his character look weird. I have found that MacKenzie wears hats like Andy's in real life and that Sophie Thompson's real voice is the same as Sheila's. A wonderful program that I will watch again.
I loved hearing from the farmers and the reason for the family living there.
