A DAY IN THE LIFE OF A VILLAGE RESTAURANT IN TUSCANY - WHERE TO EAT WELL NEAR LUCCA LIKE A LOCAL

We spend the morning in a hill top village restaurant kitchen in Tuscany watching and learning about the joy of running a small traditional trattoria serving locals and visitors. A great place to get the flavour of village life while living the simple life in Tuscany, Italy with great authentic food.
You can try authentic Tuscan food like: Tortelli lucchesi, home-made pasta with porcini mushrooms, ragù tagliatelle, stuffed pork with plums, almonds and walnuts, porchetta, fresh vegetables from the garden, venison, wild boar casserole, polenta with rabbit, farinata, ribollita, beef, baccalà with leeks.
P.S. SADLY THE RESTAURANT CLOSED ON SEPT. 30TH , 2023 DUE TO RETIREMENT
We hope a new traditional restaurant will open in our village
We are not sponsored by the restaurant. We only love to share the fun of the simple life in Tuscany.

Ciao Celia and Enzo! I wanted to thank you for the lovely videos on life in your special part of Tuscany. You have inspired my husband and myself to stay in Benabbio for a few days this fall during our trip to Italy. All of your short trips around the area are inspiring and insightful. We are looking forward to seeing the smaller town/village as you have so thoughtfully shown your viewers. Grazie!

Those noisy cicadas were in full working order ... fascinating to see and listen to the two in the kitchen as they prepared the meals. The sheer amount of work in running such a place needs encouragement and one can see why the owner is so motivated to keep going and to maintain standards when sincere commendations come his way. Benabbio is fortunate to have such a focal point for residents as well as those passing through. Quite how anyone does anything requiring either brain or physical power after having eaten a three course meal with wine on a hot summer's day, is wondrous to contemplate but best done in a recumbent position, eyes closed and on the cusp of sleep.

So good to see behind the scenes of your local Tuscany restaurant, it always amazes me how the restaurant, can cook, serve and source such wonderful ingredients at such inexpensive costs. Truly a devoted family, serving the local ( and some international) community. I especially enjoyed seeing the beef joint dish, preparation. Excellent video, thanks again for sharing this. John , UK

Bagni di Lucca is a forgotten gem in decadence with its grand villas. The spa establishments are starting to be restored and the nature and art even in the tiny villages is world-class. Sadly Cavallino is closed at the moment as Claudio and Alessandro have retired. We hope the restaurant will find a new owner with the same passion.

My husband had picked out this restaurant, Locanda Il Cavallino Bianco, a few weeks ago. He said he wanted to try it next time we visit. He was pleased when you stopped the last time. So, it’s definitely on our list for November. Pasta with peppers, sausage, onions, tomatoes and garlic is one of my favorite dishes to prepare and eat! The farinata discussion from last week…I responded with my family’s Tuscan Farinata with cavolo nero recipe but it never posted. Chestnut polenta with warm wine (farinata) is a dish my husband has heard of but never tried. I’m sure my husband will have questions about that dish and would certainly try it if Alessandro and Claudio prepared it. Italian men are great cooks! I grew up appreciating this quality. I had to point that out since Enzo shares that quality as well as my husband and father and father-in-law.

About 30 years ago, I was suffering from dairy and had substituted with soy products. That far back, I was accommodated in Italy. I even had pizza senza formaggio. Dietary restrictions and allergies can be dealt with easily. A visit later, I was eating pecorino without an allergic reaction. Maybe it was the sheep, the processing, the raising and being in Tuscany, who knows why I had no dairy reaction in Italy afterward.

@@PiazzaTalkLuccaWhat a good price! Here in Reggio Calabria fixed menu prices for Antipasto, Primo, Secondo, Contorno, not including wine... start around 25 mid week and average 40-50 weekends per person. I would say a la carte 50 - 70 per person. So quite expensive. But on the other hand can still get pizza for 5 euros each. Ha!Ha! Swordfish is in season now... but so expensive! 15 for a panino from a street food vendor. Good thing I love cooking at home using local ingredients!
