A day in the life of a nurse at SickKids

In recognition of National Nursing Week, leaders at SickKids had the opportunity to become Nurses for a Day by shadowing a nurse and experiencing firsthand the integral role nurses play in the care of patients and families.

This is great. I am a bone marrow transplant nurse in Detroit, I don't think people understand a fraction of what we do as nurses. It is so much more than passing pills or fluffing pillows. I worked a 12.5 hours shift yesterday. For one patient, I talked to 4 different doctor teams, ct scan department, the tech who does bedside echo-cardiograms, 2 different respiratory therapists, social work, pharmacy, physical and occupational therapists, relaying anything that was going on back to the patient and her family. One patient, 12 hours, and me at the center coordinating all of that care. And I had 2-3 other patients whom I was doing the same for. I think this should be required of all hospital execs who make decisions that impact bedside care, it is so important that they understand what it is we do, before say, cutting the staffing ratios to save a penny. Nurses are the center of healthcare. If you don't have us, you don't have any of it. #nurseproud

I am not surprised that the Sick Kids leadership spent a day with these amazing nurses and appreciated what they do! The compassion and professionalism of people in this world-renowned organization is outstanding. I worked as an RN at Sick Kids for 6 years in the 70's and have since worked in many hospitals both in Canada and the U.S. My daughter was also treated at Sick Kids for leukemia in the 80's. Without a doubt, Sick Kid's remains the best healthcare facility I have worked in and is one of the finest healthcare facilities in the world. I have a healthy daughter today because of the skilled staff of its hematology/oncology clinic and I had the best working experience of my career as an RN at Sick Kids as well. Thank you, fine pediatric nurses of my old "Hospital for Sick Children", for all you do!

I am starting nursing school in 3 weeks and I'm so nervous but also excited! I know it'll be hard but it'll be so worth it in the end. My ultimate goal is to become a labor and delivery nurse.

I absolutely cannot wait to become a nurse. I love being a medical assistant but I'll love being a nurse more. This video warmed my heart and I take my hat off to all the nurses, doctors, medical assistants and everyone else that play big and small roles in the medical field. God bless them all as well

I'm a nursing student and one thing I've noticed about myself, my colleagues, and nurses in general is how confident we are. I started out pretty shy but the challenges of nursing really build up your knowledge and experience and therefore build up your confidence when dealing with patients, their families, and other health care professionals.
