I'm of the belief that most mechanics are good guys and do a good job. But you don't tell your friends thst your mechanic did a good job, you just expect that. Like how the news always seems to portray the world as bad, if everything was all good it wouldn't be news right?

FREE things like what you do with battery terminals- is what brings Customers back. We used to wash & vacuum FREE at my Uncle's Shop, where I got my introduction to wrenching. I was the wash & vac kid! Hand wash with Ivory Snow flakes, Electrolux cannister vacuum. No cost. After engine work, oil changes, tune ups- would all receive a spray of kerosene then hosed off. Showing up with probable parts, and being able to diagnose, AND replace what you need- sets you apart. Knowing, or hypothesis (educated guess) helps to save time- something many of your Customers don't have lots of. A roadside Customer can't order a part and wait. You're not a "parts changer" like some say, while comfortable in their garage, Momma bringing out cookies and warm milk, parts delivered, while the Customer waits or Ubers home. God Bless you, Sir.

I spent 46 years in the automotive repair field, including a stint working as an instructor at Universal Technical Institute. I taught electrical systems, diesel electronics, Air Conditioning, and Transport Refrigeration. I taught a lot of theory as well as practical applications. A lot of guys can add freon to a car without understanding the laws of thermodynamics, and most anyone can replace a blown fuse without understanding Ohms Law. However, understanding the "why" behind what makes a system work goes a long way toward diagnosing and understanding what is not working and why. After watching this video, I wanted to share a little bit that might help you on the next charging system diagnosis. Most (not all) of the automotive batteries being used today still utilize a 6-cell lead-acid or glass mat or gel cell technology. Each of the six cells generally store about 2.0 - 2.1 volts for a standard reading of about 12.0 - 12.6 volts sitting stagnant with no load or charge present. If you just finished charging a battery, it is not uncommon to see it show as much as 2.2 volts per cell for a total of 13.2 volts for a very little while, but after it has a chance to cool down, most good batteries will calm down to about 12.0 - 12.6 volts. Today's electronic voltage regulators are set up so that they detect battery voltage and load at the same time and adjust the magnetic field as necessary in the stator and windings to allow the voltage to go up or down by a few volts as needed to keep up with the load demanded as well as charging the battery back up to normal after starting the car. In the case of jump starting a half-dead battery on a freezing cold day, it is not unusual to see an alternator kick out as much as 14.5 - 15 volts to try to keep up with the demand of keeping the cold engine running and also charging a seriously low battery at the same time. However, it cannot sustain that much of a charge rate for very long or it will boil the battery dry. The regulator has to "see" the battery coming up in voltage as it is charging so that the regulator will start to slowly drop the charge rate to protect the battery while still keeping the engine running. In the case of this vehicle, you had two things working against you: you had a "shorted" battery that read zero volts and probably had an open circuit inside the plates, so that it would never take a charge and retain it. Second, your jumper box was charged to 15 volts and even with it starting the engine and keeping it running, it was still showing in the 14+ voltage range, which your voltage regulator could "see" and was thus trying to "back off" of the charge to bring the battery voltage down some... and there is a good possibility that the car battery literally had a short internally that was causing the engine to die due to robbing the voltage necessary to keep the engine running. Wisely, you replaced the obviously bad battery FIRST, and then re-tested the system. Many shops would have simply installed the alternator, too, and made more money on the job. Like you, I want to do a thorough and comprehensive repair, but I do not believe in selling parts that I am not convinced need to be replaced. I like that you have a Power Probe and know how to use it. I have four of them, along with a plethora of other short-finders and test equipment. Once you understand how and why electrical circuits work, you will find that with a wiring schematic and a Power Probe, there's nothing you can't diagnose. I love electrical because it confuses a lot of people and I find it simple, and for the most part, it is pretty clean work. God bless you and your beautiful family, brother, and keep reaching for the stars. I love your honesty and your work ethic. I hope that this channel makes you enough extra money to help pay the bills and buy the equipment you need. I just subscribed today and will be watching all of your videos. I might even chime in with an occasional suggestion from my 46 years of twisting wrenches. Sometimes you can still learn a few new tricks from an old-timer like me...

I really appreciate how thorough you are and the fact that you don’t charge for every single thing you do. I think you look at things from a customer’s Point of view.

Earnest you are honest and do good work, so even though it is nice to explain that you do not charge to replace battery terminals, as a mobile mechanic, if it needs it, you can charge if you wanted to. A shop would not do that service for free!
