    A lot of older mechanics refuse to work on these. Some opportunity there to make some good money. Priuses, despite their reputation, are actually pretty easy cars to work on. A lot of guys pop that hood and see that inverter and all those heavy gauge orange wires and go stupid for some reason.

    A coleague of mine used to call when you almost finished and realise you forgot something to connect or put back: a mechanic's sorrow. Yes it happens to the best of us. Also I like to put marks on bolts and screw with a marker of different color so you put red per example on the place you got the screw from and mark the screw( of course you use permanent marker) if it has different size . Works fine for me. When I build in a reverse cam or whatever afterwards in my car, I label it with plastic write grounw, 12v , acc,ground and tiewrap it to the wire and what the cable bundle is for. So you don't search if something is not working like an idot,losing time. Some people find me weird, who cares if it works for me.

    I had no idea that Dorman is getting into HV battery replacements. Well done Ernest, nice to see this done by a regular mechanic. Of course you'll get the negative Nancy remarks, which are a lot like remarks about roadside brake work a decade ago. Professionals tried to conceal their technique for a while, but eventually honest and accurate work ended up being published online, by somebody. Then Professionals will shrug and slowly decide that it is more wise to actually show their technique, rather than simply complaining. This job scares me, if only because of the risk of dropping a screw onto critical elements. I think we'll be seeing a lot more of this in the future, it is probably wise to invest in a set of HV gloves.

    Los Ojos De HotSpanish There is a difference between older NiMH technology and cutting edge temperature regulated Li-ion systems. That difference translates to battery life and durability. A tesla isn’t a whole lot more expensive because it doesn’t have all those extra expensive hybrid components. Those systems (engine included) are heavy complex and require a lot of imported materials.

    No body does that. At the dealer you get the P0a80 code. The battery is on a stand in 15 minutes. You don’t have time to wait. You’d have different codes if there was a short internally where’d you’d have to be careful

  • @rj.parker

    @rj.parker

    The battery voltage has been off for hours or days before he even pulled the orange plug or the control cables. The hv battery has an internal ecu and power contactors inside the assembly. Everytime a Prius is shutdown the contactors open. So technically you could touch the dc cables at any time after the car was off. In fact the orange power plug does not disconnect the battery power at the cable connections directly. From a battery cell standpoint it disconnects the series connected cells in the middle. This is safe since the hv dc battery is not grounded to the chassis. The orange power plug also interlocks the contactor coils.

    Aren’t those refurbished? I see them coming back to replace them for oem hybrid batteries. Price on oem can range from 1500-2500 and 4-5 hours of labor. If you purchase a battery over the counter from a dealer they don’t offer warranty. So it’s your gamble.

Some sort of buick. Figured it would take a few minutes...... Couldn't quite figure it out so I looked up directions. Step 1 was to remove the front bumper. To replace a headlight.

    Was that a reman battery or a new one? I haven't heard good things about the remans. Apparently, they just replace the cells that are bad when it comes in and then ship it out. A few months down the road you can have more bad cells. Disclaimer: I've never replaced one so I'm just going on what I've seen from other Professional shops on YT. Don't even get me started on Dorman. I'd be very curious to see how this vehicle is doing in a year...if that battery holds up.

  • @rj.parker

    Dorman is remanufactured which means bad cells are replaced with other used cells. All cells are removed and load tested and capacity balanced but reman does not mean new cells. . There are one or two companies that provide new cells in kits with new bussbars and sensors. One is newpriusbatteries dot com HOWEVER, Toyota has reduced their brand new hv batteries to around $1650 wholesale, usually available installed by third parties for $2k-$2.5k while the new kits aftermarket are $1.6k. Remans like Dorman are available from many sources, usually starting around $1k. But they often fail again in one to two years. OEM can be expected to last eight to ten years, longer in cooler climates.

  • @joehomanick
    @joehomanick3 жыл бұрын

    Most of the time it is not a bad battery. . Each cell on the battery has a very small wire on each cell that corrodes and the wire comes off . When this happens the car can’t monitor the battery and will throw a code for a bad battery . Might be worth taking it apart to take a look for the small broken wires on each cell pack . Oh and to fix the broken wire issues it cost me $5 bucks for a pack of ring connectors and my time About 2 to 3 hours . And you won’t get shocked from fixing the broke wires . Just can’t happen

    Unrelated to the video, but have you considered offering services to fleets of vehicles? Companies with quite a few vehicles, but not enough to have their own maintenance staff. If you're willing to work the occasional odd hours, seems like their could be some money in that. Something like - I'll show up and replace all your service van's oil every few months outside of regular business hours so you don't have any down time". Could also considering offering to be their on call mechanic. Advertise it as getting things fixed and getting them back to work ASAP.

  • @rj.parker

    @rj.parker

    It has a small 12v agm battery for ecus, lights and accessories. If it is discharged the car won't go to READY (effectively it won't start). So jumper cables or a jump pack can be useful especially if someone has left a map or hatch light on overnight. They do not run a starter motor and are in the trunk space. There is a 12v jump point under the hood inside the engine fuse box.
