Yes this is right before spring clean up. Im 42 and for as long as i can remember lions club and the city buy bags of trash for a dollar and get entered into a drawing for bikes for kids. This is the thaw of 3 feet of snow

@ I was born there but raised lower 48 but returned as a young teen. That's why I said my birthplace. Majority of family still there. God chose I be born there so I choose to love it. I will always call it home.

I believe the signs are in Iñupiaq

it's been a long 18 years, it saddens me to see it continue to deteriorate, that is what legalizing the sale of alcohol does to an already dark, depressing, cold and difficult place to live, don't get me wrong, I love Kotzebue, I only wish the best for it, but the people who have been in charge for the last decade really don't want what's best for Kotz, they only want to line their pockets with profits of the alcohol business and everything else it brings to the "economy" so instead of the people using their Native Corp Shareholder checks on the future, their kids, cleaning up their property, anything productive, they are drinking it all, more violence, more trauma, more jobs I guess

Great to read your perspective on this, Jeremiah, thanks for taking the time to write it. Not sure how the town management influences private property clean up though? I would think, standards of front yards could be incorporated in the city code and then enforced. When it comes to junk cars, it's easier. For the rest of the personal belongings on front yards, the question becomes - what is used and what is not. You can't force people to throw away what is 'used', even if once in a long while. If you find another minute to spare, what productive you as a former resident would like to see the town doing?

I’m heading there in 5 days. I’m excited!! To be with my fiancée who’s been there almost a year now. Coming from Louisiana.

Kotzebue is a place to be, but rather than showing all of the houses that are not taken care of and junky would have been a better view on our town. There’s a lot of other place that could have been shown rather then what you portrayed my hometown to be. Kind of annoying that an outsider came in made out town look like it was t great on the eyes when there’s a lot of other areas that are. I wonder did you get permission from the owners filming their property? Do better.

Hi Vera, it is always great to receive a comment from a local! I respect your opinion and apologize if the video appears this way, this was clearly not the intent. If you read the description, it doesn't convey your point of view. I loved Kotzebue and among my travels it will always be a special place. Kotzebue's people - due to the remoteness and unavailability of MANY things - have a completely different sense of practicality than those on the mainland. What appears as 'junk' is needed, time will comes and it will be reused. For the places that look better there's of course the Northwest Arctic Heritage Center but it looked almost out of place to me. I'll remember Kotzebue by the roaring aircraft motors and barking dogs, I genuinely liked it. I'd love to hear more what you expected to see in a video like this. Next time I'm in town, I can do a different shoot.

Small towns and villages in Alaska on the west and Arctic coasts are supposed to be unsanitary and full of trash with the exception of Nome.

As I watch more I'm sorry this happened I'm still very excited

It's rough place getting rougher because loss of Native food. Lots of pollution in paradise. I hope plane don't crash to cold nothing to eat

I loved Kotzebue! One of the most unique places I've been to. Plenty of options of eat, including local dishes like reindeer stews etc. All that's missing can be ordered from the lower 48.

It’s the only large bush town in Alaska without a swimming pool and their crime is higher than any other bush town. Unless it’s work on a rotating schedule and you live elsewhere, stay away from this horrible place!
