A Dance with Dragons - Chapter 32 - Reek III
From George RR Martin's "A Dance with Dragons"
If you like what you're hearing, be sure to check out my channel, where you can find all of my A Song of Ice and Fire recorded chapters in order in playlists! And leave a comment! I don't care about any youtube algorithm reach nonsense but I love hearing from people who are listening!
I am in no sense a professional reader, voice actor, or what have you. I began this audiobook project some years ago when some friends of mine jokingly said they'd read A Song of Ice and Fire (my favorite fantasy series) if I personally recorded the whole series in audiobook form and sent it to them. Having now made my way almost through the first two books in the series, I decided to join the small community of people who post their own amateur audibook readings to youtube, and share my efforts.
I have no intention of profiting off of the work that is copyrighted to George RR Martin. This upload is a tribute to a series I deeply love, and I strongly encourage you to purchase these books. You won't regret it.
Also I should give full credit to my cat, Claudio, for the frequent background meows and purring sounds you hear throughout.

One of my favorite chapters in the entire series, so I hope I did it justice! Westeros just sucks. Even when the realm was at peace and the Stark family whole, the Boltons and any other vassal with the inclination could do basically whatever they want, including raping women tied to their lands, killing and mutilating smallfolk for little to no reason, and generally behaving like completely depraved libertines, provided they met their formal obligations to their liege. Sure, Rickard Stark might have punished Roose for his abuses had he known, but there was no mechanism for him to know, just as there's no real mechanism for the Starks to force the Umbers and mountain clans to stop practicing the Droit de Seigneure. If that reality doesn't put you in the mood to see Daenerys - with her three fighter jets - establish a centralized, autocratic, REFORMIST state (in the model of her forebear Aegon V) over the ashes of Kings Landing (if you want to make an omelette......) I don't know what will.

This is one of my favorite chapters. We know so little of Roose but we get a in depth character analysis of him and how scary he is through Reek's eyes. Roose knows Reek is broken and delights in making him cringe and squirm and even laughs aloud (which we NEVER seem him do). Roose knows everything is who is like to betray him and is so much exponentially smarter than Ramsay is. It's like comparing a a rapid dog to Hannibal Lecter. He's just as vile as Ramsay he's just much more subtle about it.
it's interesting how we see Ramsey respond to being called "Lord Snow" in contrast to Jon's acceptance of the title

I love how when Thorne first comes up with that nickname, it's mocking his lordly heirs despite his bastard name and birth. When he actually later becomes Lord Commander, that's his literal title and polite way to address him. Brilliant writing!
“They’re dead, Lord Wyman had them killed. That’s what I would’ve done.” Not gonna lie Big Walder might be one of the smarter Frey’s despite being so young, while he can’t know for sure that Wyman killed Jered, Rhaegar, and Symon he at least has the sense to guess it. Honestly, Big Walder might be more dangerous then he seems. Unlike Little Walder who was ending up more like a sadistic brute like Ramsey, Big Walder might end up being more like his Uncle Lothar or Tyrion, a schemer and better with coin and daggers then with sword. Honestly I do kinda think Big Walder killed little Walder just to start shit between the Manderly’s and Frey’s, since maybe he wanted Wyman dead since he was a clear threat. If Big Walder survives he might end up becoming quite a player in the game of thrones.

Reading Roose this way makes it all the more creepy and evil. Well played.
Roose is a very interesting villain and one of my absolute favorite villains in fiction. What makes him feel extremely scary is how polite but cold he is whenever he talks about anything, and the fact that he is the only person in westeros who isn't scared of his bastard son. I love northern tywin.
Reek Reek it rhymes with... bleak.
Hmm re listening to this, I guess it’s kind of an obvious point, but I just realized Theon gets some twisted respite/relief from his guilt by being Reek.

Thanks! I made that choice with Ramsay for a couple reasons. One was that I didn't want either of the Boltons to sound at all like they did on the show, because while both actors were great, I hated basically every adaptation decision the show made with those characters. I think its a very interesting bit of characterization and indirect storytelling from George how Theon’s dance chapters are stuffed with people who don’t respect or even fear Ramsay at all, when he is a genuine satan figure to Theon (seriously - Ramsay as “Reek” tempts Theon down the path of damnation in Clash, then “punishes” him for his sins with unending torment). But if you haven’t spent time in Ramsay’s dungeons or under his flaying knife of with his dogs at your heels, he’s just some asshole.
This is the best chapter in the series. Roose is ice and Ramsay is fire. Also how Theon is basically happy to be Reek because he can't bare to be the man who killed the Miller's boys, who are probably his sons.
Wow...so fascinating especially the Reek backstory; Did Reek corrupt Ramsay or did Ramsay corrupt Reek?

Maybe both, I knew a similar “friendship” in real life, 2 guys I knew at high school both were as horrible as the other and when they befriended each other they became much worse people so I do believe 2 people can corrupt each other and I imagine it’s the same case for Ramsay and the first Reek it’s implied Reek was already a cruel perverted person and Ramsay was growing up wild and unruly before Reek was sent to him

Reek raped a corpse yet Ramsay was the one who let him. It's clear they were both insane to begin with.
Your Roose is damn good, great work, thanks
ok Roose Bolton does not make any sense. He's fussy about my lord/milord - so I presume he noticed when Arya said my lord? so... did he know she was Arya Stark, but just didn't care? Did he know, and intended to keep her, but just wasn't expecting her escape? Did he assume she was highborn, just not a super important lady? Then when he took no action when Domeric died - his kinslaying excuse makes no sense, given everything else he's done. Nor does his certainty that its for the best that Ramsay kill any of Roose's future children? Child lords aren't great, nor are civil wars between trueborn and legitimized children, but i would think you could find some alternative (one branch gets winterfell, the other gets the dreadfort; a solid capable regent like a frey uncle serves until the kid grows up). Roose just seems so accutely aware of Ramsay's flaws that I think he'd at least be open to some alternative - any alternative. Unless he's lying to Theon? in which case, why? Why does Roose want to talk to Theon here in the first place? Why does Barbary want to see him? Part of it is practical, that Theon is our PoV so he's gotta be there when exciting things happen, but I gotta believe that grrm put some thought into character motivations. I guess Roose is gauging whether Theon is fit to play the part of Theon, and give away the bride? Dustin is maybe thinking the same - we know that later, she's interested in Theon to find the crypts at Winterfell, but why tell Roose you're interested in him, and why do so (presumably) before she knows that they're heading to Winterfell for the wedding? Also, is it out of character for Roose to conceive Ramsay in the manner described? It sounds impulsive, hot-blooded and violent, which doesn't match at all with the soft-spoken, cold-blooded, thoughtful, calculating Roose who very rarely personally commits violence (he kills Robb, and he orders that a bunch of people be killed, but I don't think he revels in torture the way Ramsay does?) So with the theory that he's a vampire... I don't know, on its own, it doesn't really explain all of this very well? Also if Roose was some sort of immortal skinhopping dude whose been impersonating every member of house bolton for centuries, one would think that there'd be some hint of that in F&B? instead, there's 1 bolton in the entire book (a girl at the maiden day ball who doesn't make much of an impression). also not too sure how that would tie into the broader story in a manner with compelling themes? I guess if Roose was a parallel to the Others in some way? Though i gotta say, despite all the contradictions and weird characterization, the roose and ramsay duo are such good foils of each other, and make for really compelling villains! And the way Danid brings them to life in these chapter is just soooooo amazing!!!!
