The first game reminded me of this fucked up thing you could do in Harvest Moon DS. If you manage to cultivate a level 100 toadstool and bring it to the Harvest Festival to add it to the communal meal, you basically poison the whole town and get a game over. Your character eats it, falls, and then the screen turns white and you get end credits with happy music. It's really surreal.

They're not poisonous unless you eat a lot of them. Amanita muscaria, a.k.a. fly agaric, is the red-capped Mushroom with white spots that you see in Mario-also, the mushrooms that Manly picked for the NPC. Sometimes the cap is more of a yellow color rather than red. A lot of people think A. muscaria is psychedelic but that's probably untrue, at least, for humans consuming the mushroom itself. In my experience, a rather large dose caused some very mild visual distortions and made me feel sleepy. That's all. Some groups, namely the Saami of Russia, and other arctic peoples, have been known to feed these mushrooms to Reindeer and collect their urine to boil, concentrate, and consume, and they swear it's psychoactive. The chemicals of import in A. muscaria are ibotenic acid and muscimol, both of which pass through the human body and are excreted unmetabolized, however, it's possible the reindeer's liver processes these chemicals differently and metabolizes them into something that IS active when consumed by humans. Not enough research has been done on these mushrooms to know for certain what the deal is, but scientists who have self-experimented mostly all report the same thing-the mushrooms are not, themselves, psychoactive. They're certainly not poisonous unless you eat a lot of then, but then again, table salt is poisonous if you eat a whole cup of the stuff. The dose makes the poison.

For once, the red-with-white-spots mushroom was picked for a reason! Amanita muscaria, also called fly agaric. Like most things in nature, it's obviously colored because it's poisonous. Luckily, it's not nearly poisonous enough to be deadly to humans in small doses, but it's enough to make you sick. It packs some psychoactive compounds too, because the best time to start tripping is when your entire body feels bad. Of course, it's probably a different story if someone ate 10 fly agaric that are larger than their arm...

i mean if you apparenly parboil them they become safe to eat in some cases but yeaaaaah- that cat villager is seeing whatever counts as a deity. literally and figuratively. but I was wondering why those mushrooms looked so familiar. thought he'd somehow spiked the entire festival party meals!

you can only eat em prepared a special way too, by heat treatment that includes fire, feeding them to reindeer and drinking their piss or soaking it in milk but that could of just been a early fly trap people are still unsure, or yes the poison will give you a bad time. if done right its gonna be a very powerful mushroom. eat enough normal shrooms you have a very bad time body and trip wise too. your body feels fine if prepared correctly and you didnt eat to much

Yeah Ikr
On the second game, it almost feels like there's a potential on the 'enter a name' to enter the 'deadg4rl' name that gets given to you. Or 'Jiko'. But it doesn't appear to change anything. Since it's a 'player name' input, I figure it might allow you to bring Jiko back over, or download her over. Though given the ending... maybe that happened anyways? Kind of weird how deleting a character apparently deletes the 'memory' of them. That, and the "We made the NPCs so realistic you can't distinguish them from real people. Wait, you fell in love with one? Well, gotta ban you, and fix the NPC, because that's glitches!" Well, unless the 'neural network' that Jiko actually is, is separate from whatever the NPC system is. And I get the feeling that the 'CATGOD' character might be an AI as well. After all, 'convert the world to something readable by a user' has implications, with it apparently being fine for 'CATGOD'. And although that might be explainable with 'staff get a different interface', it doesn't make sense to be able to convert it into a user viable space in that case. At a guess, at least some of the glitch-y stuff is due to it literally not being meant for the VR headset/displayed on screen. Given the physical sensations, I'd guess it's the former, more than the later, despite the final segment implying that it's on a monitor setup. Some other horrifying implications, outside of the dreamlike qualities of the aesthetic. And how even skipping the stop there probably wouldn't have stopped them from getting caught. Though how that works on logging out I'm not sure... the Jiko makes about not wanting to be left again, not sure if that's what the 'logging off' is, or if they managed to reunite on a different server. Though again, the memories deleted from the server... Which I guess might have been 'sentimental items'? Mementos, rather than the actual memories. Which was more what CATGOD did at the end.

its either too deep that we dont understand it yet or simply "not that deep". Like, at first they talk about how the admin prevent any personal exchange and them creating new account multiple times, i really thought both of them are "player" but somehow the latter storyline imply that Jiko is an NPC. How did she have any personal real life information? How did an NPC creating new accounts multiple times? She should be an independent AI instead of an in-game NPC so we can meet again in another serv- right, she might be server-locked, sigh... Also, if the player are really just a normal user, with normal headware, under normal circumstance, how could they glitch into a back end server for employee only? Honestly, i like the premise of the story, i just think it was too short. There isnt much time to actually know Jiko, not much time to experience the normal world, not much time to experience the "glitch" world, not much time to see the silly shenanigan that the dev made (aside from the fishing pond), and its sad because the game seems pretty nice. Can you imagine if the story were to start with MC dating Jiko for few minutes, peacefully?
@woomod2445
Жыл бұрын
@@vanzeralltheway8638 They don't allow data sharing to conceal which players are actually AIs like Jiko. Ooh! I just had an idea for a harvest themed horror game. So it'll be a Stardew valley type farming game, you'll play as a farmer planting and growing crops for a measly amount of money, just barely enough to get by, but then one night a loud crash wakes your character up! A meteorite crashed on the outskirts of your farm, and it seems to be bleeding green goo. The next morning your crops are grown and better than ever. When you sell them they go for way more money. You buy more crops, are able to fully upgrade your farm faster and even get some cosmetic items. The crops keep growing, and growing until they get out of control. The crops have taken over your farm, and the town. There is no one left. The crops took them.

First story one of the cats has a fate from mythology (don't know if that's the right word- it's a fairytale). About the wolf who ate the kids (young goats not human children). The mother goat found out and while the wolf slept she cut open his stomach and rescued her children. In order that the wolf didn't notice something had happened she filled his stomach with stones so he'd feel full still when he woke up. Then when the wolf went to the water to drink the weight of the rocks dragged him down and he drowned. I was not expecting to see this story alluded to here. I wonder why the creator chose it? Are the other deaths also references that I am not aware of?

If people know about Lain, Boogie Pop Phantom, Gate Keepers 21 or Ergo Proxy, then they def know about .hack //sign. I used to love watching it as a kid and didn't realize just how much of Tsukasa's story + themes were similar to my own. 10/10 recommend people dive into some early - mid 00's anime~ Would also recommend Betterman (1999), s-CRY-ed (2001), Infinite Ryvius (2003), Big O - Big O II (1999 - 2003), Silent Mobius (1991) and Armitage III: Poly Matrix (1995). There are more but these are the ones I can remember off top, I included the year since some of these might have gotten recent reboots. Happy hunting.
I always think of the line "Welcome to The World" anytime .hack is brought up.
It's kind of a shame that dot hack isn't really a thing anymore. There's a lot they could still do with the series.
I don't know why but watching someone play horror games is actually entertaining, you actually make your videos entertaining and fun! keep up the good work Manly!!
9:40 can't believe manly missed that lol
Your upload schedule is insane, remember to take breaks :)
i think the fact that the voices of the Harvest Festival residents end their dialogue with a lil meow sound, completely adorbs, i love the lil (probably in a cult) fellas
enupishi definitely has a second ending. I think it depends on what you type into the black box before you start he data deletion process.

Yeah, they give you three names. I think just entering anything gets you the ending manly got but entering one of those three names probably deletes the entity in questions (yourself, deadgirl or kat) giving a different ending. I'd have to download it to be sure but it just seems pretty blatant that they go out of their way to highlight the names and then give you a terminal to enter them into. Edit: Further thought made me realize you also get the name for other assets though I'm not sure what deleting them would change. However there's also the untranslated Japanese characters on the walls after you're initially (and afterwards) being teleported to Kats domain that may also hold secrets to unlocking an alternate ending that are lost on those who can't read it.
The second game makes me miss Haseo and Tsukasa. .hack walked to SAO could run and poop everywhere

Honesty the first few episodes and chapters of the SAO series had potential. But it seems like the editors convinced the the author that a death game harem would sell better...and they were right. Which lead to the author eventually being fully onboard with the change to the point he actively enforces there being a harem element in any SAO game that's made. But the first like 6 episodes (aroundish) looked like they were going in an interesting direction, posing questions different but not unlike .hack only for money to get involved and ruin everything.

Log Horizon even though it’s more trapped in the game world than SAO it feels more gamelike kinda like what I saw of .hack from the one review I watched. Like it deals with pk, guilds, npcs, guild wars, etc. I don’t remember what you lose if you die, but you do get revived in the last town you registered with so if a pk guild takes over you’re getting spawn camped. SAO felt less game like and more death game with some game elements.

@@anthonynguyen1289 Log Horizon is probably the best "trapped in an MMO" with a focus on worldbuilding that SAO *looked* like it was going to try and then dropped like six chapters in. It's just unfortunate that the LN was never finished because the creator was caught on tax evasion causing the series to be dropped lol. *Spoilers* - What you lost was your memories. At first they think there's no consequences to dying but they start to realize they're slowly forgetting stuff, first rather inconsequential but the more you die the worse it gets. This was doubtlessly going to be explained as why they were stuck in the MMO later as they did start to explain what was going on but then the whole tax evasion thing happened very publicly. I do wonder if it might be picked up at some point in the future though since that was almost a decade ago now and it was pretty popular while it was being published.

@@Goldenkitten1 I know season 3 somehow happened within the last 3 or so years so maybe the author or series still has life/second chance. Otherwise I don’t know why they would produce a third season if the series was completely dead
i watched someone play this a little bit ago already, but i sure as hell am watching manly play this again
No matter where you go, everyone's connected.
the second game is so beautiful, it reminded me of the show serial experiments lain with the aesthetics!
enupishi is the japanese phonetic transcription of NPC :)
God, mentioning .Hack nearly knocked me out with the force of my nostalgia
I love the voices
