A Cruel Christ? The Canaanite Woman's Dogged Faith When Jesus Says "No"

Not only does Jesus repeatedly reject the Canaanite woman, he calls her a dog! Where has the gracious, compassionate, sinner-welcoming Jesus gone? In this video, Chad Bird positions this story in its broader Old Testament context. He explains Tyre and Sidon’s ancient bad blood with Israel, why Matthew calls her a “Canaanite,” and how this woman took a page from the play book of Moses to catch Christ in his own words.

This text was my first exegesis in the Seminary. This text is amazing! I like this idea of divine providence in this text. The woman said: give me the crumbs, because the crumbs its enough for me. we can say that: Only crumbs are enough! But, God give us much more than crumbs. Luther said tht God provide all necessary for the body and life, and more, not because we deserv, but because your divine and patern grace and mercy. In explanaition in this video, i like so much this ideia were the woman, like Moses, remember God of you promisses, this "God, be God!".

The master talks to individuals, knowing them more than they know themselves. Sometimes a master is misread because of this. Only the individual will know and have the impact of the master's words, but when the master talks to all, then he addresses all but only as individuals, some will will hear his words, and some will not understand, for the master talks to the heart and not the mind.

Thank you so much for your commentary! It was greatly helpful! When I first read that passage, I admit I was quite stunned as it revealed a side to Jesus I did not know. I am happy that she knew how to navigate the situation and also that he softened his heart to her plea. But still - his initial and repeated reaction to ignore her plight simply because she was not a Jew is something I struggle with. And the disciples asking Jesus to ghost her followed by His little dig about the dog seems a bit beneath them all. Do unto others....?

Yes. But I see Jesus as true human as well as true God, and that the true humanity includes - initially at least - some cultural and social norms. Jesus, like any sincere Jew of his day, saw the Jewish race as the focus of the YHVH God's actions. He transcends this sole salvatory commitment through encounters with people who are not Hebraic, finding on more than one occasion that these people can see him for what he is: someone beyond humanity. (Such is the case with the Centurion whose servant or son Jesus heals. He knew of the transcendent power of the Lord - that he could heal without needing to visit his home (an environment a Jew might find grim indeed), In short, Jesus the Jew transcends Judaism.

I found it strange and distressing that God insults a helpless woman who seeked him in distress and hardship, that God can be persedued not to go back on his promises, to remind God!! Very troubling and I am a believer 😢

this teaching is way off on all counts first off the term "little dog" is a term of endearment like a beloved house pet Jesus was saying you will get feed but after the children eat first. The insult was to the children of Israel because he called them lost sheep which have gone astray & need to be found but the "little dog" was in the masters house at the masters table waiting expectantly to be feed it wasn't outside being lost she asked for a crumb & Jesus furnished her request notwithstanding that she would receive the greater feed after the children had eaten but this crumb would suffice her in the meantime also his teaching of having to remind God of his promises & hold him to account is almost heretical it's like he's saying Moses saved God from making a bad decision......how presumptuous can you be the arrogance of even thinking such a notion God furnished Moses request but to the leanness of his soul because those same people Moses pleaded for ended up causing him to sin & not enter into the promised land. Should've kept the mouth shut & trusted Gods judgement God knows what he's doing do we really think God can't see all the pitfalls angles the in's & outs of any situation. Moses got ahead of himself & so is this guy

Does this basically mean that Jesus desires us to basically take abuse from people compare ourselves to the lowest comparison the other person can make whether it be dog flea spec pest whatever we just got to go along with it and somehow not get upset or feel insulted?

In English translation, the Hebrew letter י, a yod with a "y" sound, is consistently replaced by "J." So calling him Jesus instead of Yeshua is simply a translational or linguistic choice.

Good preaching. One thing though, Luther and protestantism doesn't fit, it was clearly inserted, it was not even remotely connected with the verses. Try also to watch the same passage preach by Dr. Brant Pitre.

The reference to the ancient history of Tyre in relation to this woman is non- congruent. The ancient Phoenicians were Hamitic, the Bible states the woman was Greek, living in a Canaanite city. The NT is clear, the most Judeans, certainly the Apostles, abhorred the Greeks and Romans (Gentiles).

This made me lose my faith. I don't believe in a God who needs to be "reminded " by people to be God. Also the way Jesus acted towards the woman was childish and petty. Her child is suffering, begs for help and he calls her a dog? Is that God? Were they racist towards her because she wasn't Jewish? God is racist? I think we shouldn't shut our brains off when we read or hear things like this.

I don’t understand the concept of how Jesus or God is reminded.. I don’t grasp that concept. I tend to think it’s more of a test and contention from God to seek truth. Not human beings reminding God of who he is. Elaborate if you differ in opinion!

Chad, your interpretation of Jesus' silence or "calling the woman a dog" does not line up with who Jesus was/is. I don't think Jesus is calling this woman a dog but comparing her "faith"; heathenism (dog) to that of Judaism (the children). She uses a wholly Jewish term, "Son of David" when trying to get her way but Jesus won't be manipulated to act when she really has no idea what she is saying. Will she do anything for her daughter? Of course! What loving mother wouldn't? However, Jesus, I think, is getting the woman to understand who she is speaking with. If He is Lord instead of simply the Jewish "Son of David", then she has a need as great as her daughter. Her acceptance of that fact and her understanding of "I was sent to the lost sheep of Israel" is what moves her to say, "...house dogs eat crumbs that fall from the table." Now, not only is her daughter healed, but she is now someone that will, "...come from...the west...to take their places at the feast (eat at the table) with Abraham...".
