A Crisis for Democrats
After his disastrous debate performance in June, President Biden faced calls from Democratic lawmakers and power brokers to step aside. But with the president firmly committed to staying in, what recourse does the party have? How would the Democratic Party replace the presumptive nominee? Would such an extreme step be possible? And would it ultimately help against Trump?
Guest host Adam Harris is joined by staff writers Mark Leibovich and Elaine Godfrey to discuss.

"The anti-Trump coalition in this country is far bigger than the pro-Biden coalition." This says it all. What are we even doing thinking about keeping him on the ticket?
The West Wing folks are drunk on power. The driver has the wheels well onto the shoulder, and isn’t turning away from the ditch.

Biden is like that senior pilot of planes that you have to let go
Self-inflicted and myopic. The voters are fine.
Very dull discussion. Regurgitates comments that have been made for 2 weeks now. Waste of time.
Not sure where your information is coming from but Biden is losing every swing state.
Don't forget the Democrats successfully did this with Dianne Feinstein, and everyone knew she was literally out of touch with reality when she got reelected in her 90s.

Nancy Pelosi had the gravitas and humility to turn over the reigns (and I'm absolutely sure NOBODY had the leverage to push _HER_ out!). Ruth Bader Ginsberg didn't. Joe Biden seems determined to follow the latter example, and his legacy will be handing democracy over to Trump and MAGA.
What a shock to the intrepid investigative “journalists@ of The Atlantic! No one could have known!
Very helpful. But a correction/caution: One of you suggested Trump would have only one more term. He could unfortunately have more. The 22nd amendment text only prevents a third "election" so Trump could intentionally run for VP with, for example, one of his offspring (residents of NY) running for president while openly committing to switch places immediately. It's against the spirit but not against the text of the 22nd amendment. And the current supreme court majority would likely allow it or side-step it long enough that the issue went away. I don't even doubt the current court majority would be willing, ahead of time, for the benefit of Trump and themselves, to interpret the 22nd amendment to mean: "No person shall be elected to the office of the President more than twice [in a row]." They are opportunistic textualists.

The left has discussed this same idea, running Obama as VP, IMO this is a much more likely scenario than Trump running as anyone's VP in the future, Trump is not well liked by the GOP establishment, while Obama is revered on the left and would make any Presidential ticket immediately stronger.

@@kevinwoolley7960 I hadn't heard that. I value the Constitution above my political preferences but, if this were the only likely way to prevent the end of democracy and the suffering of millions that Trump will/would cause (and, if we calculate how badly Trump would exacerbate climate disaster, then the horrific suffering of billions in extended 125 degree heat waves without air conditioning and without water cool enough to cool a human body), I would support this. Obama could even remain VP, to follow the Constitution, rising to president only if president dies or becomes unable-or, in direst need (for example a war or to prevent a war).

@@beemaningi If Trump wins in November, he would likely never leave. Like other dictatorships around the world, when Trump passes, one of his sons would no doubt take over.

A savvy Democratic candidate would consider this for sure. It's kind of a variant of people who would like to run Michelle Obama as the Presidential candidate, which last I saw polls at a couple percent in Democratic voter polling.

Will Trump worry about the constitution? He has already mentioned terminating it. Would we even have a 2028 election? Also, the Supreme Court has given him a long leash.
Too much horse tace, not enough pragmatism.
Of course Biden is old and slow, but I am voting blue no matter who.

This is a real world example of the Prisoner's Dilemma. If this is really an existential crisis and a crisis of democracy, Biden would have resigned.
