A Court of Wings and Ruin has plot & PoC but NO substance | | ACOTAR rant review

Ойын-сауық

Today, after days of filming, hours of editing, and a series of premiere pro crashes, we can finally conclude the initial trilogy of the #ACOTAR series. Feyre’s story (or at least her POV) ends here. I don’t know if I should be thankful or fearful for what comes next.
The video above contains my unfiltered thoughts on ACOWAR, the “best” book in this series. Please enjoy. Like actually please. I’m begging you to enjoy and share bc this was way too much work.
P.S. if you made it to the end my favorite character is Nesta! Although I figure she’s going to be beaten into being a shill for the inner circle which will make her my enemy. If that is that case I place all my love on Lucien and the rest of the blacks™️ until they inevitable get ruined by that evil woman.

I’ll say that one thing I’m honestly confused about is why people didn’t expect Tamlin to try and get Feyre back considering the reputation Rhysand had deliberately curated for himself. Tamlin doesn’t know Rhys isn’t evil.

Okay, but Rhysand *is* kind of evil. He had to have done *something* to cultivate the image of being an evil SOB, and his actions in ACOTAR and manipulations in ACOMAF further prove this. Like, my dude did not need to terrorize Feyre during their second meeting in ACOTAR. He did not need to get Claire Beddor killed. There was zero reason to torture her in order to force her to accept a pact while they were UTM. He tries to act like it was all a mask, all a ruse, but he still killed and tortured people. He still did that. Does that. Gleefully.

Cassian murders an entire village with the help of Rhys and Az, and this is supposed to be some compelling part of his story and trauma. Umm, ok? Tamlin makes poor decisions in how he (attempts) to protect Feyre, and struggles with managing his emotions and PTSD, and is deemed an irredeemable monster by all of Prythian. Lucien is treated like shit by the entire (sanctimonious af) Night Court because he “didn’t do enough” to protect Feyre, EVEN THOUGH he continually risked his life for her Under the Mountain. Like…please make this make sense.

I used to want a Tamlin redemption arch but after thinking about it I don’t want it anymore. Now I love Tamlin and I’m super pissed about what Maas did to him. I don’t see him as a bad guy all I see is author intervention so that she can make him an asshole so everyone likes Rhys better. The reason I don’t want a Tamlin redemption arc is because EVERYONE hates him. His redemption arc isn’t going to be like Nesta’s at all. His redemption arch isn’t going to change people’s minds and make them love him again. There is no way for Maas to undo or change all of this hate and bitterness towards him because then she’s going to have to point out the faults of Feyre and Rhys and we all know Maas isn’t going to do that to her fav retconned babbies. So I used to want one but now I just want her to wither kill him or leave him alone.

Completely agree. Atp, if SJM even tries to redeem Tamlin, I'm sure she'll do it by having him grovel at the feet of her precious court of dreams. I'd rather she forgets about him. Which is a bit sad to say, because Tamlin's story still has plenty of potential... in the hands of a better writer. Feyra fell in love with him while he was still beautiful and beloved by his people. Now he's broken and alone, struggling with a ton of trauma no one seems willing to acknowledge- a literal beast most of the time. If she were to give him a second chance with someone else, she'd be writing a far more convincing beauty and the beast retelling than she did in ACOTAR.

It's because this is so obvious that it's frustrating when she drops worldbuilding hooks like the idea that the rest of the world is allying with Hybern against Prythien and then deflates it almost immediately. It's like SJM thinks so little of her readership's intelligence that she thinks she can trick them into thinking her smut novel has real worldbuilding when it doesn't.

Honorable mentions to Nesta, because I think her meanness is funny, and Elain, because I always have a soft spot for weird girls. My least favorite might be Feyre? idk I just remember getting real pissed when I first heard about the stuff she did at the spring court in this book. iirc, didn’t she try to set it up so that she would get caught with Lucien in a compromising position? Just to make Tamlin lose it a little more? Like, the spying and the sabotage is fine, but taking a guy who’s in a precarious position and who’s just trying to be as good a friend as he can be, and using him to trigger your ex-who is also his boss and friend-is so unnecessarily cruel. Like, honey. You’ve moved on. You’re married to hashtag feminist rhysand. You do not need to inflict this kind of emotional damage on these people.

The whole "let's kill Lucien because of succession" shit makes no sense... First, he's the only one they're trying to kill. Second, he's the youngest sibling, so why would he be a problem for succession? and third, somewhere in the books it's said the magic "chooses" the next High Lord (how that happens is never really explained), so... And it's implied Lucien is the son of the High Lord of Day, so him being targeted because of succession issues makes no sense.

A 2 hour long video roasting this overhyped trashy series that Hulu thinks everybody loves? Yes please! What bothers me about Feyre being High Lady of the Night Court is that the courts are tied to the magic of their High Lord. Feyre has no magic tying her to the court or it’s inhabits because she MARRIED into thr “family”, she doesn’t directly come from there and so her title is just a title her rich husband gave her that holds no weight. Also can I just say that Rhysand being so f*cking rich has always bothered me, he’s supposed to be the most powerful High Lord and yet you can’t control the Hewn City or the Illyrian camps just cuzzzzzzz tradition? And Feyre’s father who only has like 5 lines and then comes in out of nowhere and immediately dies is so stupid. And Feyre and Rhysand f*cking in a camp surrounded by dead or dying soldiers is so f*cked up Also also, spoiler for Acosf, Sarah wrote Rhysand putting a shield around Feyre so no one or nothing could touch or harm her which is exactly what Tamiln did in the second book so Rhysand becomes the new Tamlin Sorry for my rant!

Feyre's status as High Lady is just really funny, because at any second Rhysand could revoke it, and if she ever tries to use her supposed authority as High Lady and someone disagrees with her, they're going to run to Rhysand, because *he's* the one with the power, the godess-given authority to command Night. Feyre has no personal power beyond the power she was given by others. Her faerie powers are other people's powers. Her title was given to her. Her money is actually Rhysand's. Her house is Rhysand's. Her friendship circle are Rhysand's first and foremost. Also, no. While the shield Rhysand put on Feyre was consented to (it was a compromise, but I'd love to see that conversation), what is really funny is Rhysand and Feyre locking up a traumatised *Nesta* "for her own good."

I just finished a marathon of your videos cause they were so entertaining! I have one thing to add: After careful consideration, I don’t think Illyrians are supposed to be POC. here’s why: a) if you google illyria, it’s an area around the adriatic sea that actually exist. It basically is albania, the balkans, and a region of southern Italy, so they’re probably white in the way most Italians are, just naturally darker skin tone but still white. b) I think the description of skin tone is too inconsistent over the books to relate it to race, I don’t think she wanted to make it a thing, her main attempt of making a parallel to racism imo is when she talks about the lesser fae / higher fae situation. c) as a POC who technically is also from illyria (this is so funny to type lmao), I don’t see how the culture reflects on the traditions of these places, historically Albania (plus nearby areas) was considered by the Roman empire as an area full of fierce soldiers with badass armies and weapons (they were also said to use elephants in battle which was shocking to romans and kind of a big deal at the time lol). So that checks out with the insane training and how they’re fantastic warriors and everything. From that perspective, the cultural bigotry would be a reflection of the 100 BC warrior mentality (misogyny, rape culture etc.). If this was never what you thought and if this doesn’t make sense, I’m so sorry! Just wanted to add my two cents lol

I find tamlin relatable to an extent in the hate he receives for decisions he had to make in a lose-lose situation while also submerged in the blinding forces of love and trauma, then naturally turning out as a result to be abusive and broken as anyone in his position would. I find him to be one of the most interesting and realistic characters. Less about supporting his choices and more about him making sense to me despite him being a total dick many times.

Hello again. Continuing from my last comment on your video on ACOMAF. I've mentioned before that Tamlin's physically abusive trait is kind of muddled by the fact that he's not personally doing anything, that he's not You can say "he does the usual abuser thing of apologizing and saying it's not going to happen again, even though it will," but it's literally not something he can control, and this whole "exploding" thing happened *once* naturally. The second time Tamlin exploded, Feyre was specifically needling him, trying to provoke him. It's even worse because Tamlin is currently under a lot of stress, being the double agent against Hybern, and Feyre is just throwing kerosene onto the fire here. Your point that Tamlin is believing people with "high authority" than his sentries, than the people who serve him, is one interpretation of events. A different interpretation is that he's a double agent, and his plan requires a positive relationship with Hybern in order to do the most work as a spy. He can't punish Ianthe, because that would damage his relationship with Hybern. He can't punish the Prince and Princess of Hybern, because that would damage his relationship with Hybern. He's stuck between a rock and a hard place. He *knows* Ianthe's a lying snake, but he can't *do* anything about it because that will damage his relationship with Hybern. Feyre isn't helping, constantly pushing him into situations where Tamlin must choose his Hybern over his own people. This all comes to ahead with the realisation that Tamlin's non-aggression pact with Hybern is the only thing preventing wholesale slaughter of Spring, and a violent invasion of the neighbouring courts -- something Tamlin is trying to prevent. Of course, Feyre fucks this all up. She doesn't so much destroy his court as push Hybern to decide that the non-aggression pact with Spring isn't worth it. Spring is destroyed. Summer is attacked. People were tortured, murdered, at best simply displaced. The High Lord of Spring has lost everything, despite his best efforts, and now the border between the Faerie world and the Human world is left to rot.

I did like Cassian but then silver flames ruined him and Az (I like him bc he seems to be the only one with a brain, and is quiet and shy like me) is teetering off into dislike because of silver flames and I am worried what his character will be like in the next books.

Also now that you’ve brought it to my attention Azriel and Eris should also kiss because the tension between them would be sharp enough to split the atom Rhys is my least favourite and Feyre’s a close second because she apparently sees anything in that detritus-shovelling slime of a man

The hilarious thing in the novella is she severely judges Nesta for drinking and sleeping around and SJM makes ZERO connection between Nesta doing this and Mor doing this. I read the book! I think Tamilin DID try to protect her. Dude literally sent her back with money to her family before Amarantha came to claim him and his court. He knew he would be powerless UTM to do anything so he did what he could before then. It was Feyre that made the CHOICE to come back and put HERSELF utm for Tamiln. I really can't stand the flack every one gets around Feyre and Rhy from Tamlin, Lucien, and Nesta like they dont have trauma of their own to sort through. No lets act like they dont have a right to feel the way they feel about what happened to them. SJM really wheeped their trauma under the rug do feyre can swoon guilty free over rhysand.

So like, I love to jump on any deep dive into this trash fire of a series because it feels so validating to hear actual, rational perspectives and criticisms that a lot of the devout fans like to sweep under the proverbial rug. I actually stopped listening to a podcast hosted by two straight white married women who gush and goosh over each chapter recently because they just kept straight up ignoring the actual issues and valid critiques and it got tiring listening to them give SJM the Gluck Gluck 5000 treatment every other week, lmao. But based on yours, Cindy's and Cari's vids (and admittedly, even the podcast) on this series thus far, Nesta is by far my favorite because she seems to be the only person in this universe that understands that Rhys and his Round Table of Homies are full of cum and bullshit lmfao. And, tbh, she's the better protagonist than Feyre could ever be, and her books are only bogged down because SJM's sex scenes are cringe af.

Oyo, just here to say that abuse is abuse no matter if it’s “instigated” or not. Saying an abuser wouldn’t abuse if the victim didn’t instigate insinuates that it’s the victim’s fault, when the abuser has full control over their actions and reactions, they just choose to react with abuse. Victim blaming is icky. Ok that’s all bye!

  • @AvatarNaty

    @AvatarNaty

I think the key issue with this is that Tamlin just doesn't have control over his actions and reactions. You cannot compare him to an abuser taking a swing at their partner, because an abuser *chooses* to lash out, but Tamlin *doesn't*. His *magic* lashes out and, while his magic is part of him, it is also *separate*. It's a *very* common trope. It's called Psychoactive Powers over on TV Tropes. Magic is tied to emotion, no conscious choice needed. If someone becomes so blind with rage, their magic will lash out destructively. If someone is terrified of being hurt, their magic will defend them. If someone running for their life, their magic might give them an extra speed boost -- or teleport them away. Feyre, herself, experiences this, as well. She describes it thusly: "I stopped hearing the words. Stopped hearing anything other than my heart, my breathing. Fire exploded out of me. Raging, white-hot flame that blasted into Beron like a lance. ... Beron shielded barely fast enough to block me, but the wake singed Eris's arm -- right through the cloth. And the pale, lovely arm of Lucian's mother." Feyre didn't choose to lash out at Beron. She experienced an extreme emotion and that emotion triggered her magic to lash out. Oh, sure, she follows that up with an intentional attack, a conscious decision to hurt the man. She also hurt the Autumn Lady when she did that. An innocent woman who just happened to be standing by. The Autumn Lady, who is in a horrible relationship with Beron. Worse, she hurt the Autumn Lady *using Beron's own power*. Yet, nobody treats this like how they do when Tamlin does the same thing. So, yes. While you're right, it doesn't change the fact that this situation is too fantastical for it to map one to one on a regular abuse narrative. You can map it, but it's like using the wrong puzzle piece that still somehow fits to complete the picture. There's something distinctly wrong about the whole thing. If SJM wanted to make him physically abusive, she should've just had him take a swing at her, push her up against a wall, something like that. No. SJM chose to write him as she did, so now we get Tamlin being a physical abuser because he nearly hurt / hurt Feyre with his magic, which, unlike traditional physical abuse, he had zero control over. This isn't to say that Tamlin doesn't have responsibility for what his magic does. He absolutely does. He should apologise, he should try and get therapy, because therapy is the only way he can regain any control over his emotions, but to compare him to an abuser taking a swing at their partner just doesn't work. It also *does* make Feyre incredibly toxic in this situation. It *is* her fault. She willingly walked up to a traumatised Bruce Banner, pushed every single one of his buttons, and welcomed the Hulk's fist to her face. She opened the werewolf's cage and threw herself at its claws just to prove how monstrous the man inside truly is. She gleefully provoked Aang into entering the Avatar State, before he could control it, and let herself get burned.
