A Conversation with the First Black Rockette
Ойын-сауық
In 1987, Jennifer Jones became the first African American Rockette. This month, she sat down with Danelle Morgan, current Rockettes Dance Captain, to chat about their experiences as pioneering women, all that has been accomplished toward creating greater diversity within the Rockettes, and looking to the future of the line.

Another reminder of how hard it is to be the first. I so appreciate that Jennifer Jones persevered and made it so that other Black women and women of color could see themselves as a Rockette and realize their dream just as she did.

The story about the tights upset me so much. Also I realize that I must definitely be the next generation down because to me, to see the Rockettes lined up with different skin tones I still see everyone as one unit moving and appearing the same- the same but different in a gorgeous way.

I remember my family saving the magazines she was featured in as the first Black Rockette.. It was then that my family started taking us to see the show. As a kid, I remember watching their legs looking for brown ones while they did their famous kicks. We were so excited every time we spotted the ones who looked like us! Thank you for breaking barriers!
It’s insane to me that it took that long to have a black Rockette. I’m glad they are making strides in the right direction. Also, is she aging in reverse? She is several years older than I am but looks decades younger than me 😂 She is stunning!
I remember the whole black community went up in the hood for her when she became the first Rockette! And she was right the black community did start to go to the show after she was hired! I went on a class trip! An unforgettable day! ❤
I'm not crying, *you're* crying. ...The sheer number of New York's traditions and institutions is so moving. What a tremendous conversation this was; two strong artistic athletes bringing - for me - a new level of appreciation for institutions like the Rockettes. It took some time, obviously - it hurts to hear Jennifer Jones's story around the tights and "accommodations" not made (I put that in quotes because it was not about making accommodations - i.e. special treatment - at all, but about common sense, not to mention common decency in staff-performer interaction). I hope that dresser has changed (or at least retired - hah!), and I can see that the Rockettes have begun to do so. ...Again, I just circle back to these two women. I've run out of words. But I will hold this interaction, and the conversation, with me for a long time. Thank you.
As someone who’s worked in costumes, I can’t fathom telling a performer that that simple accommodation can’t be made.
Wonderful interview. The Rockettes are such a great tradition. I cant wait to see them in person.
Thank you.... this was amazing and inspiring... from a fellow black sister
This was moving on many levels. Thank you! Absolutely beautiful.
Thank you Jennifer Jones. Thank you Radio City
Thank you Radio City Hall! Thank you for the changes and moving forward with love for all mankind. Thank you to that beautiful young woman and for the courage it took to be the first. Her telling the story brought tears to my eyes, something I was not expecting. God Bless you all!
This is absolutely beautiful!!!
She’s amazing 🥰💖
She doesn't look a day older than when she was 19!
Thank you for this video 💗
Super happy that we have more then one sister join the rocketts
this brought me to tears, wow
Wow. She still looks really young.
I look forward to seeing body diversity in future Rockettes members.
I'm not sure if it is deliberate or not (you know, to show the diversity and to show everyone can become a Rockette), but is the girl most on the right (at 3:05 ) missing her left hand? Or is it just the position she's holding her hand and the angle the picture was taken from? I truly hope they will start to accept even more diversity within the company. Not just skintone, but also dancers with disabilities (like the photo suggests). And talented dancers who do not reach the 5,6 height requirement. And dancers who are not (born as) female. Etc.

You are not seeing things, she is Sydney Mesher, and she was born with only one hand. She is a wonderful dancer.

Representation Matters
KZread is preventing me from saying what I would like to say, and it has to do with good things for people, nothing evil. BEWARE KZread is censoring. And I loved this segment. So happy to see opportunities for all people, especially people who are this beautiful and talented and seek to entertain and help others!
A 15-year career, from age 19 to 34.

Yes some i follow one of them on IG and she's not only a regular Rockett but a lead, which means shes one of the choreographers right hand.
Radio City heads need to find a way to prove they can be a more inclusive institution. This will lead to more people of color and disabled people auditioning which will, in turn, lead to a more diverse dance group.
spread the word about god
Y vuelve la burra al trigo con el 'progresismo'.
Since we’re pandering, let’s start letting men in there, too. What about short people with short legs they’re not allowed to dance and kick? If you’re gonna change, such an iconic ensemble really go all out. Let’s sprinkle in some really overweight girls as well.

Implying that it is pandering to include other dancers other than whites is crazy to me.
