Fascinating conversation. Thanks for posting. Didion’s writings have always captivated my attention because they capture an iconic era in the Golden State. CF is one of a handful the writers for the Atlantic that keep me interested in this publication so I was delighted to run across this dialogue. Currently reading CF’s collection of essays on thinking for yourself. Thx.

I grew up in Pismo Beach, and adore Didion. She captured the paradox of California better than anyone.

Thanks. Caitlyn Flanagan wrote two of the best essays about Joan Didion - the one on which this essay is based (The Atlantic, May 16, 2022) and another (The Atlantic, Jan 10, 2012) describing events around Didion's 1975 residency at Berkeley. At the time, Flanagan was the teenage daughter of Berkeley's Chair of the English department. In a humorous set piece, Flanagan describes a departmental dinner her parents put together for their visiting soon-to-be literary star.
