If this makes you feel any better about your grandad,s watch, try looking at it this way. For the first week that most people get a new watch they are constantly looking and admiring it. There is this excitement that is just kind of universal about getting a new watch. You have now brought the watch back to the new, shiny condition that made your grandpa so happy in that first week.

If a watch has exploded in value since I bought it… Either I’ll wear it as if nothing had changed, I paid what I paid, as long as I was happy with that purchase, that’s all that matters. Or I’ll sell it, and buy other watches with the money. There’s no point owning a watch you’re scared to use IMO

I agree with this but also guess other people get enjoyment out of owning something but not using it. That seems odd to me. Like buying a car and not using it or buying a hammer and never hitting any nails or buying a nice rifle and never shooting it. I don't even get the investment thing either, as there are better ways to invest and realise a better ROI than on most watches, especially attainable ones. First and foremost, a watch is a tool and for me, the joy is looking at it to tell the time. I am ok if it costs £10 or £20,000. If you feel you cannot afford to wear and potentially damage a watch, then it is probably above the amount you should be spending on it in my view. I look after my stuff but I don't nanny it. Use it, enjoy it and cherish it.

  • @BabyJesus66

@@Hixyboyblue I would argue some people look at watches or cars as art. I have an art collection which hangs on my walls and I never "use" it for anything other than the enjoyment of looking at it. Some people are the same way with watches and cars. They get enjoyment from owning and looking at them. There's also the people who have 150-200 watches. So you might wear each one twice a year... At what point does it become "not using" the watch. If this applies then you should only own 1-5 watches give or take a few.

Hi Jenni, thank you very much for answering my question, and the MASSIVE plug for my IG. I’m with you on being apprehensive about wearing a watch that has exploded in value. When I pay X amount of money for a watch, I have a reasonable expectation on how/when I would wear it, how careful (or careless) I would be to it etc. A watch that appreciated massively would suddenly throw that balance way off.

Sure the obvious is that you still have it, but Im sure your grandfather would be very proud of what your doing here, and I just feel like its no mistake if you haven't sold or mechanically damaged the watch. I think its beautiful that you have a watch from someone significant in your family.

4:52 I recently got a Longines from my grandfather, who passed away 10 years ago now. It is from the 70's. It was in a really good state, with just a few scratches, I got it revised and the watchsmith was luckily persuasive : he told me polishing it would make it lose its vintage look, and also all the memories behind it.. I thank him very dearly for convincing me, because it was obviously the best choice.

At least you still have the watch which is great! When I was probably seven years old my mother gave me my grandfathers old watch to wear, I have no idea why she gave it to me when I was so young. My grandfather had recently died and I had never met him. He was a navigator in a Lancaster plane during World War II and the watch was issued by the RAF and I was told years later that he used to use it for timing during his duties. Having no idea of its history I swapped the watch with a school friend for some pretend glass diamonds which seemed like a great deal for a seven-year-old 😞🤦🏻‍♂️

My biggest regret is buying a Universal Geneve “Space Compax” for $200 from a guy before the internet developed circa 1987. Then using the early internet to sort of find out and research that I had a nice watch. And then finding a reference on a bulletin board post (you don’t know what that is, you’re too young) to sell the watch to guy in Switzerland for $1000. I was so proud of myself and he had to do a wire transfer!😆😆 and I bought a quartz a Seamaster Bond😏 which I still have? And then realizing for the rest of my life that a Universal Geneve “Space Compax” is sort of a “Holy Grail” watch to some and just goes up in value every year. It’s haunted me ever since but definitely has driven me to enjoy watches and love them . Currently wearing a Tudor “Pelagos” I’m a big fan of your channel and keep up the great work!

Hi Jenni! I love your videos and the fresh perspective you bring to things. You just seem so darn nice and genuinely a sweet person. I want to ask why do people always ask what an alternative to Rolex? It disregards the quality and offerings of other brands.

That is one of the reasons why I almost always wear my gold wedding ring and never spare it. It collects the marks of my life as we progress through the days. That said, I do polish it lightly from time to time. It just looks better kept that way and there are plenty of deeper dents and scratches that make it retain its character. It even makes those stand out more. Just like memories, you can't retain them all and only the most important leave their mark permanently.

The best Moonphase under 10K is the Christopher Ward Moonglow. Also I have the Omega Speedmaster 38 in black. It is a great watch, it fits perfectly and can work as a sports watch or something more dressy. It has one the the best bracelets ever - a "presidential" style bracelet that melts on your wrist. Plus it comes with box sapphire crystal, rhodium plated hands and indices, 100m water resistance and a date window that disappears with the dial so is not distracting at all. The big bonus is that it houses a real modern co-axial movement and is a real column wheel chronograph with a silicon hairspring. It is seriously the most under-rated bargain in the watch world right now considering the technology inside the watch along with the heritage of the Omega Speedmaster line.

You did not ruin your grandpa's watch. You hit reset on the patina. Everything he ever experienced with that watch is still there. But the patina from here on out is yours. No shame.

Nice G-Shock teaser :). I like my Casio solar analog/digital watch. The lume on the hands is great and it runs without any winding or battery while being thinner than a G-Shock. I don't get the Rolex craze and the premium is beyond me, but ok if that's what you like. My favorite brand right now is Breitling. I don't buy watches for investment, but have made money on them. I buy what I like and don't care where it goes from there.

Another enjoyable conversation !!! It's a touchy subject, but don't judge anyone for their interest on watch collecting or appreciation. However those that are dealers or flippers that take advantage of those who love watches. Fake or modified to be sth it is not, tor even masking or misrepresenting condition or flaws again to take advantage of us, his is where I draw the line.

I got my first salaried job a while ago, and would like to buy a watch to celebrate. I’m looking at a black bay 36, but I was wondering what you think about new vs vintage in the ~€2-3000 range. Is something like a used Polerouter or Patrimony a good buy?
