Sapphire rollerball is where it's at. Fountain pens are nice, but it's like comapring a Gull wing Mercedes to a GT3RS. Room in the collector world for classics and modern substitutes that outperform them. You can love a 60 year old Patek or a MB&F.

“Timepiece” is borderline obnoxious, like calling a pen “a writing instrument.” It sounds much more appropriate when a company like AP or Mont Blanc is marketing their products, but pretty pretentious for the everyman to throw around in normal conversation Love this content btw, always a lot of fun!

A college professor noticed I was wearing a contemporary(at the time) Omega Seamaster Pro 2531.80 that i had spent a summer working to primarily put aside money to buy, and asked me what the difference between a watch and a timepiece was. I responded, “a decimal point on the price.” I later wrote a well regarded comparison (back in PMWF days) between it and a Seiko SKX781 “Orange Monster” where I pointed out the Omega was a nicer watch, but not enough that that Seiko didn’t knock it into a cocked hat when value was considered. I mostly collect mid-high solid gold vintage pieces these days, but doing it right in life is being happy, and looking down on anyone that manages that is probably proof that you don’t.

Excellent video, as always. I’ve been a quiet observer on KZread for some time now, you can be proud of the fact that your video was interesting/compelling enough for me to “create a channel” so I can comment! I wanted to chime in briefly about the EDC discussion. This is a complex issue for sure, but there is an inextricable link between watches as tools and the pivotal role they played in conflicts throughout history. So there is at least a valid narrative link between an interest in a firearm as a tool and a watch as a tool. I also find discussion and themes amongst many KZreadrs whose content I have come to enjoy, such as yourself, TGV, Teddy, MadWatchCollector, TimeTeller, etc., to have a common theme, that of individuality and personal freedom. Not to make a false equivalency, but the way I see it a person who is otherwise following the law and comporting themselves in a magnanimous and ethical manner towards others/society, can feel free to post a photo of their EDC, have a hobby involving firearms + “time pieces”, and consistent with the idea of freedom/individuality enjoy doing so as long as they are not harming themselves or others. For example, to some, a firearms hobby is entirely consistent with a like of watches, but it would be just as easy to judge someone for conspicuous consumption of things like timepieces as it would be to say that someone who likes firearms is odd/off putting. From where I sit, I think one of the more positive things about social media can be an opportunity to digest and be exposed to a diversity of viewpoints, perspectives, and so on, maybe that is the case with the viewpoints of those making such posts. Just some food for thought! Sorry for writing a novel, keep up the excellent work.

Wanted to take my new 8900 diving last week when I was in Aruba but the conditions weren’t good for diving so I didn’t go. Still wore it in the pool and ocean though! For me it’s not about using it as a dive tool, it’s just fun.

It's great that some people know the history behind the brand, but you don't have to lambaste someone for not knowing a watch company's past. Do you know the history behind your wrangler jeans? Or your hyundai car? Or your converse shoes? You can just appreciate the watch and design without getting into a history lesson

I have been watching timepiece/watch channels since the pandemic started, I do admit to being a bit weary of it now, and that is probably down to the ‘collective neurosis’ of some of those within the community (not you Jenni) making their petty observations.

The worst trait is when people assume you are a “collector” when you have more than one watch. If you have a car and a truck, you aren’t a car “collector” you just have more than one for different uses. If you have more than one shirt, you aren’t a shirt “collector” so if I have a couple daily watches and one dress watch, I’m not a watch “collector”.

When you buy a watch, whether it is a $20 Timex or a $100K AP, it should make you happy. If it makes you happy, anyone else’s opinion shouldn’t matter. But if you put a picture on social media, you open yourself up to possible criticism. Someone, somewhere will not like your watch for whatever reason, no matter what. And unfortunately many don’t abide by the old adage “if you don’t have anything nice to say, don’t say anything at all.” If you are buying watches strictly for getting approval and affirmation from others, you’re going to be disappointed. The one person you need to make happy is YOU.

What a great topic! Regarding "watchpiece," it's perfectly fine; there aren't a lot of synonyms for "watch," so it's bound to be used when discussing watches on literal watch fan forums and pages. Sort of like using "sofa" instead of "couch" etc.

Snobs - both regular and reverse variety - are everywhere, in every hobby and profession. They quickly reveal themselves. The only people I have heard say “timepiece” are behind a counter selling watches. I have everything from an F-91W to a Rolex in my collection, but the most valuable watch i own is the one my daughter made as part of a build-a-watch event at the jewelry store she works at - surprised me with it on Father’s Day this year.

I love watch and knife pictures! I think there are quite a few people who are passionate about both and many peoples' passion for knives has nothing to do with "weapons". I think it's wrong to assume that any knife is immediately a weapon. A knife is primarily a tool, an incredibly useful one at that. Yes, there are knives that were specifically designed as weapons; however, I would say that the majority of pocket knives were simply designed as tools and many even as useful "pocket jewlery"" (and most knives (pocket knives, kitchen knives etc) are also used as tools, not as weapons).

Never tell law enforcement you are carrying a knife for "self defense" that makes it a "weapon". If you say it is for food prep. cutting boxes, tape etc. then it is a "tool" most laws about knives are now about "intent".

In the U.S. the love of watches has a good crossover with other mechanical hobbies like cars and guns. Guns are obviously a huge part of the U.S.A.'s founding and culture so a lot of people carry a firearm everyday just like we carry a knife, flashlight, and wear a watch! Most of us have our license and train at least on a semi regular basis. We carry to protect our loved ones, and we dont mean to intimidate or be aggressive in these photos. The guns are just a part of what we love and carry every day! I totally get how its a foreign concept to most outside the U.S., and they often have a negative connotation, but I hope to break that misconception about gun owners. Maybe I'll do a video on the subject. Great video I love this type of content!

  • @TheAnzel360
    @TheAnzel360 Жыл бұрын

I can see how European and some American audiences would find the watch/weapon thing surprising. But it's really not. In Red America, carry a gun is totally normal. So for the status obsessed, posting an expensive weapon next to an expensive watch seems natural (but we can probably all agree conspicuous consumption is obtuse). I think what would surprise non-gun cultures, is the demographic crossovers in sub-gun cultures to other more mainstream cultures. Examples: People who are into precision shooting and car racing, people who are into german guns and watches, people who build furniture and also build custom firearms. I derive similar satisfaction from admiring the engineering of a mechanical watch and a well made firearm.

One of the annoying things I find are the watch enthusiasts who have plenty of high-end watches but sit there spruiking up the cheapest Casio's and G-shocks as the best watches ever. Hi Jenni. The only point I would like to comment on is the grey market Rolex. I have personally experienced awful treatment from official Rolex channels and vendors. They are the epitome of so and so's, snubs and bellends. So thank god for the parallel markets and secondary markets. What other options do I have? Beg to be placed on a list and wait for years to get my hand on something so common as a Rolex? It is just a matter of price, as Rolex have lost the plot and cannot deal with their own success. Some would say "you are crazy to pay bigger prices for this Rolex" but these are mainly Scottish tightfisted folk who shop 1 tomato, 1 cucumber and 1 carrot every other forthnight and bathe in the same water for 4 consecutive days to save money. If you are after a luxury watch you have to pay for it. It's part of the intrigue and the excitement to outbid someone else.I hope you get my point! Lovely work by the way. I am a fan of yours!

Timepiece vs Watch - Who cares. Both accurately describe what is on your wrist. Wrist roll - Annoying only when drawn out an absurd length of time (more than 30 seconds).

Hi Jenni. Fun video. Considering resale value in the collecting equation is OK but shouldn't overshadow the less tangible factors of loving a watch. Using watches as an investment strategy is OK too, while watch flipping as a avocation isn't. Car shots are OK, but not the ones with a pair of blurry shoes in the background.

I wear what I want - don’t give a $h!te about what anyone thinks. I have watches in the 30s and 40s and prefer the smaller ones because they are way more comfortable. I love my cheap watches especially when I travel to sketchy parts of the world. Nothing screams “rob me” like an expensive watch plus I beat the hell out of my watches. Scratches? The first hurts and as time goes on and the more scratches accumulate on my watch it gives them character, battle scars acquired on trips around the world. Lastly, i love watching Jenni. Such a welcome change from all the men who put out these videos. She has great presence on camera and her personality really goes a long way to making it a positive experience. Yeah, I can relate to the Disdain comment - I own TAG, Invicta & Glycine along with a few others. All the comments come from people HIDING behind a monitor & keyboard; never face to face. Haven't had issues with any of my TAG's, Invicta's or Glycine's. 1) Haven't researched the hate for TAG. 2) Not all Invicta's are over the top. Mine are more on the conservative side of design. 3) Glycine watches are still high quality even though Invicta now owns them. Invicta is providing $$ backing & nothing more. Should we start bashing & disrespecting all the brands under the Swatch umbrella? These brands obviously couldn't survive on their own & had to be taken over by a company that makes plastic watches in order to survive. (NOTE: Bashing only hypothetical. I own some from those brands).
