A Comfortable Seat for Standing Desks - $99 Ikea Lidkullen Review

Ikea's $99 Lidkullen Stool is the perfect addition to your standing desk. It reduces fatigue and increases movement which can improve focus and creativity. The 360° tilting-seat allows you to comfortably perch and sit.
It's the most versatile and well-built seat for standing desks under $400 that I've seen. It's a great second seat to your task chair or if you're comfortable with active movement, the Lidkullen works well by itself.

🌟 UPDATE: MAY 4 🌟
The Trollberget has a higher minimum sitting height - 26" / 66cm than the Lidkullen - 23¼" / 59 cm. I incorrectly said both had the same minimum height. Apologies. This adjustment makes the Trollberget less appealing to me.

OTHER USEFUL SEATS & ACCESSORIES FOR YOUR STANDING DESKS
1️⃣ ErgoImpact LeanRite -
A seat that allows you to sit, perch, and lean. The Leanrite supports your standing even better than the Lidkullen. I use this seat a lot right now. Great upgrade. Supports a wider range of user heights from 5' to 6'4" (152 to 193cm).
See my review here: • The ONE Seat you NEED ...
Link: www.ergoimpact.com
Amazon: geni.us/LeanRite
Note, the PerchRite is NOT made by ErgoImpact. It's a cheaper leaning chair with reduced functionality. Made by Lumi who makes many other ergonomic tools like desks and chairs.
2️⃣ Guitar Footrest - $15
This is a great accessory for helping you improve posture, productivity, and comfort while standing. Raising a leg up in a "captain morgan" position takes a load off your lower back helping you to reduce pain. Rocking it back and forth keeps blood from pooling in your feet and the fidget movement helps you focus. See my review here: • This $13 Footrest Impr...
Amazon:
$15 Neewer Footrest: geni.us/NeewerFootrest
$20 Herc Footrest: geni.us/HercFootRest
3️⃣Imprint Commerical Flat Mat
I've been using this mat for several years with very little wear and tear. It also grips the floor quite well. Avoid the "Imprint CumulusPro Professional". It's cheaper, less supportive, and generally an inferior product.
Amazon: geni.us/ImprintCommercialMat
4️⃣ ErgoDriven Topo Mat
This mat has raised surfaces that help you move around throughout the day. I love being able to stretch out my calves and massage my feet on the raised edges. The TopoMat is more supportive, less slippery, and larger than the popular AmazonBasics mat.

Really good review mate. Helped me make a decision between the Lidkullen and the Trollberget. Both seemed similar when I tested them in the outlet. I was leaning towards the Lidkullen after testing, but your considered analysis really helped me finalise my decision. Well done and keep up the good work.

Thanks for this! I stumbled upon this stool on the IKEA website. I currently have a Nilserik but I’ve found that the curved seat is uncomfortable pretty quickly, so this stool seems like a good option. I have a desk chair that works really well for me but I like having that pelvis angle you mentioned, I do the same when meditating on a cushion on the floor and it makes all the difference in having a good active and comfortable posture. Now that we can only do order pickups and not test the product in store this review is really helpful.

@@ProductivityTherapy you can definitely see the work that went into it. You made the kind of review I would want to both see and make myself. Great slider work. If you do this level of production into a once a month video on posture and productivity vs doing a review you'll mostly certainly blow up in success! I went out the day ikea opened and bought this chair and it was exactly as you reviewed it.

Hey, sorry for the late reply and thanks again for the feedback. It's nice to know I'm hitting the mark on what some people wanted out of a review video. The slider was surprisingly well made, got a motorized one from Neewer with remote control. There are some issues with occasional jerkiness but for 1/3rd the cost over something better I'm incredibly happy with it.

I am always amzaed at the quality for price that Ikea delivers. One of the reasons why like half the furniture here in German households is from Ikea. And this review was great. Really made me decide on getting that one for work. I work at a small store and due to how much consultation I have to give and the "checkout" area being more like a bar than a normal cash register I can´t really sit down on a normal chair as it´s too low and getting up every 5-15 minutes would be quiet bothersome. But this is basically made for it.

Excellent video to tell me everything I needed to know when deciding whether to buy the LIDKULLEN to replace my hard wooden chair for working from home. So helpful seeing you demonstrate all the different ways you sit on it and move about on it and snappy, no-fuss explanations. This is a very good review. What company is the red wobble stool ? Can you do a deep analysis of the just the difference between that and the Ikea Lidkullen. Also I saw the wobble stools have a round seat and some has triangular seat and I want to know if the seat shape of the wobble stool makes any difference. (may be a round one will keep you seated more stable and less fatigue on legs ?) I almost bought a wobble stool, but I saw your review and now I am not sure about it. Thanks

Thanks for this info! I'm hesitant to order from Ikea because they no longer phone customer service lines to correct for delivery mistakes. They only delivered half my order in the fall and I'm out hundreds of dollars :( So... Needless to say I don't totally trust them! BUT this is exactly the type of stool I'm looking for. I was wondering if the foot ring can be adjusted. I'm a shorty with a fixed height standing desk and I like to pop my feet up on a high ring when I sit, but it seems like only the larger standing desk seats have those. Would I need a foot rest, or does this rise up? Thank you!

Thanks for the review. I am curious how this stool would compare to the Qor 360 Ariel stool which has a moving seat.

Yooo so happy to see you're familiar with Gokhale! Do you think the slope on this chair is suitable for stack sitting?

I think I will in the future. There's a lot of great content on the Aeron, less so on the leap but it's not a chair that makes me super excited. I personally am not a fan of expensive foam chairs as they breathe as well. I'll have to do some research to see if there's some good uses for foam besides "I like it more".

Thanks Machi! Glad you liked it and thanks for that feedback. I was using Nexstand's K7 to test it out for that gaming laptop. It works as that laptop is thick but for a thinner laptop I would get Roost's laptop stand or a knockoff version (not Nextstand's). I'm definitely going to do a review of them in the future for remote working tools once this pandemic clears up.

So the best and safest would be a lithium-iron-phosphate battery. They charge quickly and can hold a charge overnight. They're also safe under high-temperatures and won't combust like lithium-ion cells if they're overloaded or overheated. Thinkware has the cheapest one but they're expensive unfortunately. $250+ There's no other good options for consumers. You can technically buy a smaller 12V lead-acid battery and charge it on the side but most people won't do that. I do not recommend using lithium-ion battery banks, they're cheap, compact but not stable and I wouldn't want one in my car where it could catch on fire and your car along with it.

This was really helpful, thanks! But why wouldn't you get a stool-height task chair as the best of both worlds?

I don't have a standing desk (yet), but was wondering how practical one of these would be - for now at least - for sitting at a fixed-height sitting desk for long periods. Even with high-end chairs (e.g. Steelcase Leap) I find that armrests, back supports etc eventually make me conform to the shape of the chair, and sooner or later slump. Switching to such a minimal setup seems daunting, however, as I'm looking for one chair to use all the time: I don't really want to have several chairs cluttering up the place so I can switch between them.

@@thibaultdhaese4739 Not yet, I went to Ikea with a tape measure and found that the stool is a little higher than a standard chair in its lowest position, so there's very little clearance for my thighs under a fixed-height desk. That in turn restricts movement, so kind of defeats the object... The other model (with the leather cover) is even higher and actually doesn't fit under the desk at all when in use. So, I'm just going to wait and buy the height-adjustable desk and stool together.

Hi, I’m on a low budget side so my intended setup is fixed standing desk (no height adjustment) and Ikea Lidkullen. My question is standing (w/o chair) all the time has major impact on my body, beside of tiredness?

Thank you for your review! I bought one too, but sadly after 2 months I always feel that there isn't enough cushion. I feel the edge of the piece of wood inside the seat cutting my blood circulation, so I ended up by not using it anymore :P It would be perfect without that problem ( in my opinion).

I wouldn't use it to perch all the time, in fact it's not that amazing at it. Instead it's the versatility to go between the different positions while standing upright that might help you out! Glad you liked the review.
