A Comedy of Rectangles: Jean Hélion and Meta Painting
Do self-referential qualities limit a work to being art about art, or can they say something about art AND life? Looking at self-referential or 'meta' qualities in Jean Hélion's pictures of his studio, his multi-image 'study' sheets, and the 17th century tavern pictures of David Teniers the Younger.

@@liamcawley6570 Sorry for the late reply, and thank you! Main Hélion publications include: 'Hélion' (Philippe Dagen, Hazan editions 2004, French), 'Hélion' (Rene Micha, Bonfini Press 1979, English), 'Jean Hélion' (Insitut Valencia d’Art Modern /Tate Liverpool 1990, Spanish and English), 'Jean Hélion' (Centre Pompidou/Paul Holberton Publishing 2004, English). They all have very creative titles...
"In death, I'd see my young face again from rot. In life, I've known the foggy faceless old man in bed. In truth, I don't know what's real than what I had believed. In reality, the righteous saints shall unveil the flesh of our flesh & bone of your bone. In all, the void echoing a resounding bell of manifestation & trasendental. That's what I called 'medium'."
