A closer look into QUALITIES OF LIGHT for food photography
In this video, I discuss the different light qualities as they pertain to food photography, and I go over an often misunderstood aspect of light when describing a certain quality.
Learning food photography lighting techniques can be great, but being able to describe and adequately explain light in photography is the single best skill I've learned in my growth as a photographer and I want to share it. I hope it's helpful!
Thanks for watching!

You’re one of the best teachers out there, hands down. Sidenote: I can’t be the only one who laughed out loud at “I’m not going to photograph an insect.” That was so left field! 😂😅
How are you not the biggest food photography youtuber. I'm pretty new to any photography and have spent the last eight months trying to figure this stuff out watching other vids and reading other stuff. I swear half the time the videos just do things and never actually explain how or why they did it, or when you should do it. This video is the opposite of that, in depth, easy to comprehend and understand, and maybe the most important, there are actionable takeaways that I think will make a difference right away. If you understand the underlying principle of what you are trying to accomplish then you can understand how to apply it in any situation Cheers man, great video.

Even 1 year after, this still a MASTERPIECE video. Thank u
This is CRAZY! I use my camera for 10 years and I had no idea about this. Thank you!
This was such an eye opener! I’ve been struggling with this very thing! Gonna go practice these new skills now! Thanks so much for the video!
That video is in depth, and I love the way you explain light qualities and categories, I'd love to see a live food shoots for you where you apply these concepts on field giving different examples of what you just talked about, cheers, and keep it up.

Agree! I would love to see examples on how to achieve them. Soft and diffused and hard + specular are usually simple. But I struggle to produce soft + specular like the photos of Bon appetit! What are your recommendations? Thanks Soo much for all your info!
This video is a life saver! I've been struggling with taking better photos of my food products but you explained food lighting so well that I'm more confident now to take photos 📸😊
Thank you, another beautiful and very useful video. Also digged the difference between technique and a principle.
Another awesome video! Thank you!

I'd love to see a video on all the props you use for food photography / table-top product photography. You've got some effective items in your arsenal! 👌🏻👌🏻

Also, one thing to add to the mix is the distance of the light. I've been studying and trying to master light from many different resources (yours being one of my favorites :) but the closer the light to the subject the more contrast it will have. So if you see an image that looks "soft" but has a lot of contrast, it's more than likely a very large, soft light, placed close to the subject, slightly lower in exposure.

Totally agree. I didn't mention distance cause I think I made a separate video on the inverse square law somewhere. But you're right. The closer a light source is... the more light fall-off (and contrast) it will have. Thanks again Steven!
you're a hidden Gem... I can see you being promoted by youtube very soon. Excellent content.

Very Good Video.
Does this apply too on natural lighting? And if yes how ? It depend for example on the time of the shooting ?
How would you label a light diffused or specular when used on humans?
Thanks for the vid! Wouldn't you say that specular and diffused are qualities of the materials, more than that of the light?

That's my view. I agree
Hello, dear friend, I am watching your videos from Iran. I would appreciate it if you could enable the Farsi language in the subtitles of your videos, thank you.😊😅
