BRAM STOKER'S DRACULA / Gary Oldman and Winona Ryder star in the tortured tale of a charismatic vampire, based on the tale of the Prince of Darkness. / Gary Oldman, Winona Ryder and Anthony Hopkins star in director Francis Ford Coppola's visually stunning, passionately seductive version of the classic Dracula legend. In BRAM STOKER'S DRACULA, Coppola returns to the original source of the Dracula myth, and from that gothic romance, he creates a modern masterpiece. Gary Oldman's metamorphosis as Dracula who grows from old to young, from man to beast is nothing short of amazing. Winona Ryder brings equal intensity to the role of a young beauty who becomes the object of Dracula's devastating desire. Anthony Hopkins co-stars as the famed doctor who dares to believe in Dracula, and then dares to confront him. Opulent, dazzling and utterly irresistible, this is Dracula as you've never seen him. And once you've seen BRAM STOKER'S DRACULA, you'll never forget it.

I like how Gary Oldman's performance gave us so many different sides to Dracula. The heroic knight, the charming young nobleman, the decadent old vampire lord, etc.

Such an interesting insight. The castle can be considered a carachter (not to mention it acts way better than Keanu Reeves), so I'd say it reacts to Dracula like a servant would react to their master. Another way of reading it is that the castle represents the way the surrounding world reacts to Dracula's presence: through the movie is always underlined that he is a creature repelled by Nature herself, so I guess it would be a logic consequence.

The shot of his eye when he recognizes the cross is one of my favorite shots in the movie. Up until then he is poised as a civilized and reserved old man who even tempts himself with the taste of blood, but his true identity as a vicious member of the undead came forward when he recognized the gold emblem that represents his sworn mortal enemy. Brilliant creativity from Coppola.

The shadow thing and then Dracul floating toward him would clinch it for me and I'd find some kinda way out of that dark castle. Scary stuff and well made. I usually do not care for horror flicks but this was well made and melded fiction with fact as well drama of love, loss, death and so on.

Neto Cuellar Dracula’s servants in this film are human; they’re just gypsies. One of the companions (probably Jonathan himself) says so, later. Judging by how the flick presents them as subhuman, Dracula likely considers them unfit to feed on.

We read dracula in high school. It may just be a fog of memory, but I vaguely remember my teacher saying that it was actually dracula who picked up Harker to bring him to the castle. With that freaky long reach maybe he was right?

Makes sense being that the wolves were hellbent in following the carriage the whole trip and even seemed to be waiting by the castle all night every night, being their master was indeed Dracula.

That's true. During Harker's whole stay Dracula tries to convince him there are other people in the castle - coachman, majordomo or kitchen servants, but they don't want to be seen. Later Harker saw Dracula preparing meal for him and concludes there are only him, vampire and his three "concubines" in the castle.

I know almost all of the effects were old-school in-camera, but I had no idea that when Keanu is shaving, he's actually looking through a cut-out in the wall at a body double so that when real Keanu turns around, Dracula can still be standing at the door.
