A Classic HeroQuest Fan Unboxes Hasbro's Retail Edition of HeroQuest and Shares His Thoughts

Ойындар

Always Board Never Boring was never one to turn up to the party early (he doesn't turn up to parties at all, usually), so in this video he's going to unbox his retail copy of Hasbro's edition of HeroQuest and spend some time comparing it to the original edition that he spent over a year restoring. You may want to pop the kettle on.

    Exactly. I still have an original copy + Kellar's Keep that I got in about 1992, that my Dad and I painted together. I will NEVER, NEVER part with it- Dad started me on what is currently a 30-year miniatures journey with it. But if my kids like a few demo adventures playing my old copy, I may just go ahead and rebuy the new version for as far into the expansions as they are willing to play it, even if buying the base set and Kellars Keep duplicates what I already have.

    As a kid I saw kids playing this game at school in '93 and was utterly amazed, unfortunately I never got to play it until 30 YEARS LATER. I was ecstatic when I heard the game was being reedited in 2021, I bought the base game and Mage of the Mirror in January of this year, and I just ordered 5 extra expansions. This game is freaking amazing to get people to play some kind of D&D without scaring them off with 17 rulebooks and a week to create a character hahaha.

    Also used the hairdryer trick to remove the adhesive from the box. And I did it with 3 boxes (the main game, Kellar's Keep and Return of the Witch Lord expansions). So I had to remove 12 adhesives in total. I did similarly as you demonstrate in the video, but I realised that the box was getting hot. So while opening the third box, I changed the strategy: I cut the adhesives carefully with a small knife, removed everything from the box and then proceeded to use the hairdryer to remove the adhesives. I'm not sure if the hairdryer's hot air was hot enough to mess with the plastic material inside the box... But it's better to be safe than be sorry. Fortunately it didn't damage anything in the first 2 boxes, as far as I can see.

  • @AlwaysBoardNeverBoring

    @AlwaysBoardNeverBoring

    It doesn't hurt to be cautious, especially when handling valuable games, but you'll find the adhesive melts well before anything got hot enough to hurt material on the inside of the box. I've been using the hairdryer trick for an incredibly long time, not just on modern games but on charity shop finds that the tape monkeys have got at, and I've never once had anything harmed by it.

    I think this new edition has done really well (and it deserves to). Hasbro have said they have lots of expansions planned, and so far they have already released Kellar's Keep, Return of the Witch Lord and the Guardian Knight hero. Furthermore, we have seen the box cover for a new edition of the Frozen Horror expansion, and some of the images in one of their videos hinted they might be remaking the Elf Quest pack as well. I think we can all look forward to quite a lot of new HeroQuest stuff coming out.

    It's a shame the retail edition didn't come with the other female character options, but I do think they will turn up in the expansions down the line. I think it's great that they created the app to allow for solo and pure co-op play, but I find it a pain to use. I will use it if I do any more solo runs on the channel, but I would always play with a Morcar player if I had the chance.

    Absolutely. Given that the component comparisons were also between painted and unpainted I thought the new sculpts won hands down. Couldn’t see anything in the old version that was preferable. Yes, round cornered dice roll a little better, but the new heavier dice with debossed icons are nicer. I find the fixed HQ board a major constraint. The D&D Fantasy Adventure game has large square tiles that allow more variable layouts, and also some of the best dice and combat mechanics you’ll find in any dungeon crawl. The tiles used in the D&DACG series are even more varied and really appeal to kids.

    Thanks for the unboxing, even though there were some people who had already done that, I still preferred your way, way more relaxing. So, since Im an old fan and also player of A&D 2nd Ed of course, when it comes to talking about artwork, I can say that the old one is something I used to see in every book that had such content, meaning epic fantasy content. I remember it in many rulebooks of wizards of the coast as well as in early MTG cards, which I think was the style of the era, 80s style. Miniatures are definitely GW style, I had a copy of Warhammer and 2 army packs, elves and empire, plus a few scattered army pieces here and there, way expensive back in the early 90s. Though I can say that the new ones are good and they reflect the new "style", this cartoonish one. To sum it up, i also still prefer the old game compared to the new, even though I never owned it, but still played it a lot with a friend who did, so the new one is gonna fill some of the space that old the one didn't. Anyway keep it up, and thanks once more.

Just a shame they don't make an appearance in the relevant quest that Artwork is based on as it would have been an acceptable update to the original if they'd made that change (I love that Artwork and was always disappointed those beasts never got explained or sppeared in game). Interestingly one of the Mythic only quest packs (The Prophecy of Telor) does also play into the idea of Abominations having a somewhat otherworldly nature (being summoned in what seems to be a ritual and being able to house a long dead spirit for a limited amount of time). Would be interesting if they leaned into this different background a little more in any other new quests they put out as I do feel it fits them better than how they appear in the original quests where they've been copied into the Fimir role of bossing Orcs & Goblins around. Certainly some story / quest potential there.

    Heroquest was the game that got me back into gaming about 14 years ago. I was given an original copy and it was the inspiration to start painting minis. Just before Hasbro announced the relaunch, I sold my painted copy with four expansions. Because I had just sold it, I wasn't interested in the new version. 12 months or so on and I have just bought myself a retail copy. The continued support of the game, with new expansions coming out has got me interested. As a big dungeon crawler fan I just needed to have it in my collection? Still prefer the old zombies, skeletons and mummies though!

    There are basically two main choices - Battlefoam and Feldherr. I've never bought any Battlefoam, but have several Feldherr sets that I really like. I did a video on the Feldherr stuff for the new edition of HeroQuest, which does allow for the whole Mythic pledge to fit in one box. You can find the video here: kzread.info/dash/bejne/X394vLObdc2ZeMo.html I believe the Feldherr set has a few spare slots so you could slip in a few extra miniatures like the guardian knight. Once Hasbro starts to release things like the Frozen Horror you will have to buy extra sets (Feldherr will almost certainly make a new insert for each new expansion that comes out).

    @@AlwaysBoardNeverBoring both the Battle Foam and Feldherr options look good. What I would quite like is to keep stuff in its original boxes as we already have them, the Knights could be added somewhere else I guess. But I will say these are both quite expensive for what they are, especially being a Mythic tier backer it costs almost as much as I paid for the game in the case of BF and that will be a hard one to get approval of the Wife lol But I do want to protect my minis for the long term and certainly play with my kids once they are old enough. What about card sleeves? Is there a particular one which you think is best? And all those before I even get to the painting....

  • @AlwaysBoardNeverBoring

    All custom foam options are expensive. I don't consider them for most games, but I wanted them for my original HeroQuest and Space Crusade. I doubt I will buy one for the new edition, but if I do I will go with Feldherr, which works out cheaper than Battlefoam (Battlefoam's Mythic set is about $112 while Feldherr's is 50 Euros, so less than $60). Both the Battlefoam and Feldherr sets fit inside the original box too, although Battlefoam has separate trays for Kellar's Keep and Witch Lord, while Feldherr only have options for putting it all in the core box. I don't tend to sleeve my cards, so I don't have any recommendations. I would suggest just measuring up the cards and doing a search for sleeves that size, then getting a brand with a high micron count (look for something at least 60 microns, put preferably higher).

  • @AlwaysBoardNeverBoring

    @AlwaysBoardNeverBoring

    Жыл бұрын

    Nobody uses a specific set of house rules with HeroQuest. I've said in other videos, that I doubt any two people use exactly the same rules, as they customise the experience to their tastes. However, Avalon Hill have published some "official variant" rules, some of which are quite nice. The best one is "unthreatened movement" which states that when there are no monsters on the board you do not roll for movement. Instead you can move four spaces for each dice you would normally roll (eight spaces, for most people). Once monsters turn up, you go back to roll-and-move to simulate the chaos and uncertainty of fighting in dark, cramped conditions. I use this rule in all my online playthroughs. They also published some "playtest" rules for animal companions, and there is an online adventure where you travel with a helpful wolf. The HeroQuest companion app recently added a number of options, like allowing goblins to break up their movement with an attack (rather than attacking before or after moving) and allowing skeletons to attack diagonally with their scythes. There are also options to give monsters more defence, more body points, and things like that. In short - everybody tinkers with HeroQuest, and even Avalon Hill are playing around with new variant rules.

    Nice quick review! Do you think there is any salvation for the plastic tray, considering that the owner _might_ want to paint the miniatures? I didn't own the original back in time and I've been wondering for weeks if I should purchase it or just buy the first 3 Dungeons & Dragons board games instead. This game is so expensive and the fact that they made a shitty plastic tray and didn't even bother to put a plastic wrap on the box are some of the reasons that's holding me back.

  • @AlwaysBoardNeverBoring

    @AlwaysBoardNeverBoring

    2 жыл бұрын

    It's not that they didn't bother with shrink wrap. They made a choice to use zero shrink wrap. The cards and tokens are wrapped in paper, and the box is sealed with stickers. They aren't the only company doing this - Ravensburger springs to mind - and I think we will see more companies doing this in the future as a small step towards reducing plastic waste in the industry. You definitely wouldn't want to use the insert as-is; even if you aren't painting the miniatures they will eventually get damaged by the inserts. I have done numerous videos on my channel about reshaping the insert, replacing the insert with a purchasable option from a company such as Feldherr, and making a custom insert. I chose the custom insert option, using rubber steel and magnets to store the miniatures upright. I love the D&D adventure game system and own Castle Ravenloft, Wrath of Ashardalon and Legend of Drizzt. They are really good fun but a completely different experience to HeroQuest.

    @@AlwaysBoardNeverBoring Thanks for the reply. Yeah, I support the idea of reducing the plastic waste. But I think that the shrink wrap helps to protect the box from scratches and some damage. I've seen a LOT of people complaining about their boxes being damage. And considering this game costs about 120€, this is really disappointing in my opinion. And the fact that we are forced to replace the plastic tray is yet another reason to be disappointed. Not only we have to pay 120€ for the game that might have a damaged box, but now we need to spend extra money (or time) to replace the plastic tray. I _really_ want to support this game, as I always wanted to own it (I just played it _once_ some years ago, in 2015, when I was 31 years old) due to it's popularity and my interest in RPGs and Fantasy settings. Just out of curiosity: do you remember how much did you pay for your D&D board games? And would you mind to elaborate how they feel different than HeroQuest, as both are Hack'n Slash board games? Thank you.

  • @AlwaysBoardNeverBoring

    @AlwaysBoardNeverBoring

    The D&D games used to be around £40 on Amazon in the UK, but I've had them for years so I would expect to pay more these days. The D&D games are pure co-op (no dungeon master), you explore randomly generated dungeons and they feel more like race against time puzzles where your hit points are the timer. You are constantly forced to keep moving or the dungeon punishes you. HeroQuest is more casual, you can explore at leisure, and dungeons aren't random. I have some Castle Ravenloft and HeroQuest playthroughs on the channel which should make it clear how very different the games are. By the way, the D&D games don't have a storage solution for the miniatures either - they are all just bagged up floating around in a single large compartment. Mine are magnetised in separate crates with my other miniatures now. In fact, very few of my miniatures games had an insert that I would use, and some didn't even come with inserts at all. Even the original HeroQuest didn't have storage for the miniatures, so my original set is housed in Feldherr foam now.

I had no hairdryer at the time. I agree with the abominations. I hate them and think they don't go well at all with the nature of a dungeon crawler. They're aquatic creatures that belong to more a lake or swamp setting. We played the first 6 quests and as always I have to play the evil wizard as no one except me knows how to fill that role. I was nearly always the evil wizard player when I was a child too. Some things never change. Up side is I got to kill the dwarf, wizard and elf in those first quests. Only the barbarian got away. Love this game and I wish I had a group of people to play with on a constant basis but no one except a few like board games anymore. I will always treasure this game, it brings so much nostalgia for me.

    Interesting you had the same crumpled corner. It's a lovely-looking game; I do just wish they had picked something else instead of the abominations, although I am sure lots of people love them. And well done on killing all those heroes. Making a barbarian run away is almost as good as killing one, too.

    Casinos use sharp-cornered dice. They should be fairer, more random, with less chance of anomalies. They won't travel as far, which reduces the risk of them constantly rolling to any bias. There is reduced risk of cocked dice, too. The new ones are also larger and weightier than the old wooden dice, so they just "feel" better when you roll them.

    Swapping to the new bigger board will help significantly with the overcrowding that tends to happen with the original. I don't really see myself mixing furniture and miniatures between sets though. I will probably use my classic HeroQuest stuff when playing the UK rules, and the Hasbro stuff when playing the US rules. I do see them all getting used together in D&D and Rangers of Shadow Deep, though, along with my Mantic furniture.

    I would say the original is far less cartoony - compare the classic Les Edwards cover art to the new cover art, for example. The new edition has a much more modern, almost video-game inspired, aesthetic, it feels very much in the style of things like World of Warcraft and a lot of current fantasy art. The original has a more classic style that was indicative of that era. I think both styles are good, and the art direction for the new edition makes perfect sense - a modern aesthetic that still pays homage to the original. It doesn't surprise me when people prefer it to the original.

    @@AlwaysBoardNeverBoring Well, for the cover art I prefer Les Edwards as well. Grew up with Conan and loved the D&D from the era accompanied by art from Larry Elmore or Clyde Caldwell. But for the miniatures, the new one does it for me more. Maybe cartoonish is a bad way to express it. What I meant to say it's more more stylized, super-deformed look. But like I said, if I saw and played the classic, I would have probably preferred that as well.

    @@superspecky4eyes Fimir live on moors and bogs, and shroud themselves in magical mist. They are inspired by Celtic mythology, and are very magical. Of course, none of that was used in the HeroQuest setting where they were just big hitty lads to boss the orcs around. The new abominations lean much more into the aquatic design and they look more like they should be living under the sea than in wetlands. I don't think Hasbro picked the abomination design because they thought of fimir as being amphibious (they are only ever described as lizardlike in the game). I think it was more a case of needing a large "green" monster and wanting to put a unique stamp on one of the creatures like GW did with the unique fimir.

  • @AlwaysBoardNeverBoring

    @AlwaysBoardNeverBoring

    2 жыл бұрын

    I'm actually working on a video at the moment talking about the differences, and this obviously features in it. I think it really comes down to how the game was designed to be played. The European version is a lighthearted, competitive romp, with everyone out for themselves. Rewards aren't shared, monsters are weak enough that a lone hero can tackle several at once, and you are supposed to block the other heroes and even cast spells on them. The NA rules encourage a more cooperative style of play which I believe is how Baker really wanted it to play, and most of the competitive stuff is taken out. I think they may also have been aiming the NA version at a slightly older market.

  • @superspecky4eyes

    @superspecky4eyes

    2 жыл бұрын

    @@AlwaysBoardNeverBoring That's an interesting perspective. I suppose it doesn't help that the some of the rules are somewhat "loosely" written. Most of the time when it says "player" you don't know if it means specifically an "opposing player" or literally any player on the board.

  • @AlwaysBoardNeverBoring

    @AlwaysBoardNeverBoring

    2 жыл бұрын

    Yeah, the NA rules set approaches the game a little differently. It's funny to compare the spell sets. In the NA version the wording is always "monster" while on the Euro spells it specifically states "monster or player." And the movement rules for the Euro version require permission for heroes to pass through other heroes, which isn't a thing in the NA version.
