Both Till and Richard did not have a good relationship with their mothers. This has nothing to do with abuse. Even less to do with genetic testing. Only with emotional distance. That's why this song is very intense. @ UN7ITLED I appreciate your reactions. You don't just sit there and let the music/show affect you. You question the intention behind the song and translate lyrics even if you don't know the language well. Respect! This is so much better than the reactions of people who just celebrate everything that is suggested to them.

The song was written in particularly close collaboration between Till and Richard (one of the guitarists). Whether Till really had such a bad relationship with his mother is not really known - there are people who say that, but there are also people who say he is very close to his mother. Richard, on the other hand, said himself that he never really felt loved by his mother and that his childhood was quite lonely. By the way: For me (as a guitar fan) it is Richard's guitar in particular that gives me goosebumps.

This song still gives me the chills, especially when Till yells mother and Richard plays the solo, it's made me tear up a couple times as well. Still a favorite from the Mutter Album. Oh and this song also has some background to it because both Till and Richard had bad relationships with their mothers.

Till Lindemann's texts are always ambiguous and can be interpreted in different ways. He has a good and loving relationship with his mother, who often sits in the audience at Rammstein concerts. At Madison Square Garden she had a place with the stage technicians. She said in an Iterview that she is very proud of her son and is a huge fan of the band. "Mutter "is probably about a motherless child or a clone.

Yes, nipple is the same in english and german. In german its just written Nippel, but sounds the same. Also the litteral german translation for "birthmark" is "mothermark", so it makes more sense in german that he want to cut it off even if he bleeds to death.

Despite having a bad relationship with his mother, Till also raised one of his daughters on his own, as a single father, so this could also be a comment on that. He thinks that having both parents present is crucial for children to properly develop. Also, fireworks hurt as hell. But it is not new that Till often sacrifices himself in the name of his art. For example, in Mein Herz Brennt music video piano version (which I deeply recommend, it is very emotional) there are visible cuts on Till's arms. They are completely real, made by himself for the sake of the music video. He has visible scars from this to this day.

Everytime when Til cries severeral times after his mother and then the guitar starts i get goose bumbs all over my body. You also have to think of clon technology cause e.g. "In meiner Lunge steckt ein Schlauch, hab keinen Nabel auf dem Bauch" means "There's a tube in my lungs, I don't have a navel on my stomach" or "Gezeugt in Hass und ohne Samen, niemand gab mir einen Namen" - "Conceived in hate and without sperm, no one gave me a name". They aren't. Flake's book talks about the sparks and how painful they are. I think you would love Morgenstern from Volkerball. It's breathtaking musically - almost a Latin dance beat - and that performance, in particular, was one of their best ever. You can see them smiling at each other, just vibing off each other. Even Flake smiles genuinely. It's a joy to watch. And no one ever reacts to it since its not their showiest. It's just perfect. And the subject is deeply personal - it's about a girl who is so ugly she only goes out at night so she doesn't frighten the daylight and prays for beauty - I won't give the ending away, but it's not what you'd expect. Till first wrote as a poem it in his book Messer with himself as the irredeemably ugly one, scarred from acne and rosacea. It's one of their most underappreciated songs.

I know Keith Richards of the Stones has written about how one of those landed on his hand and burned down to the bone. So you have to be careful. @Un7ttled Many times we see Rammstein give us true stories with metaphors added.. He may be talking about feeling his parents never loved one another, that he was created without love, or he feels so detatched from her that he can't believe he was birthed. A lot of people describe the feeling that they were not birthed, but hatched. He could be talking about fertility clinics and the new kids with 3 biological parents. I wish we could ask Till what he means. He'd probably tell us to explore it for ourselves.

Yes we use nipple but it's more a kind of a slang word. The 'official' name is 'Brustwartze' what translates literally to breast wart. German language is very descriptive and it's common to combine substantives (nouns) into one word

The translations are a little iffy at times. For songs in Rosenrot album and earlier, I recommend the lyrics on the website herzeleid.

The song deals with the possible effects of cloning on the cloned child. This is of course hypothetical, but sheep can also be cloned.

Zwitter and Spiel Mit Mir are pretty good as well :) Zwitter is about hermaphroditism and loving yourself, and Spiel Mit Mir is about... Um... Well I'll let you figure it out lol I'll just tell you it translates to "Play With Me"

The problem with these literal word by word translations is that Rammstein (and a lot of other german artists) use more of a.. poetical symbolic way of wording and writing. That way translating it directly often times doesn't make much sense.
