When I first picked up this piece of Jacaranda, I had intended to make it into a yarn bowl. As I put it on the lathe, I found a large bark inclusion. I had two choices, continue with it as a yarn bowl, or chuck some resin into it and turn it into this bowl. There was also an ant colony living in the wood, that I only found as I was turning it. When I added the resin and put it in the vacuum chamber, I found many ants floating to the top.
Jacaranda is an Australian hardwood known for the purple flowers that come out every spring. It is easy to see a Jacaranda tree as they really stand out. The wood is light in colour and was easy to turn. I added the purple resin to represent the flowers that sprout on the trees.
The bowl is 17cm in diameter and stands 11cm tall.
