A Challenge to the Mainstream Comparative Approach to post-communist regimes | Bálint Magyar

The development trajectory of post-communist countries cannot always be described in terms of liberal democracy. In order to understand socio-political metamorphoses in states with a totalitarian heritage, it is necessary to abandon the generally accepted approach, convinced Hungarian politician and sociologist Balint Magyar.
The scientist developed his methods of studying the modern political systems of Central Europe, the post-Soviet region, and China.
How did the regimes that can be described as "patronal democracy" and "patronal autocracy" form in individual countries of the former socialist camp? How did Hungary go from a liberal democracy to a patronizing autocracy, and why is China a "dictatorship that exploits the market"? How do autocratic regimes neutralize democratic institutions? This is far from a complete list of questions, the answers to which you will hear during Balint Madyar's lecture for the #GlobalMinds4Ukraine project. His research includes concepts and theories for analyzing post-communist democracies, autocracies and dictatorships.
