"Hey Martha, quit wailing in my EAR!" :) Seriously though - this is very interesting. This footage was part of a promotional film made by New York-based director Michael Chumburg circa September 1980 and is also available on the recent CD "Early" It should be noted that at this point ACR were rather publicity shy after a certain UK journalist made up that salacious story about Tony Wilson giving Simon and Jeremy thigh massages before every performance.

A film from Michael H. Shamberg (1952-2014) "The tangible legacy he leaves is impressive enough, including music videos featuring such artists as New Order, Patti Smith, the B-52s and REM, as well as directing a feature film, "Souvenir," that Indiewire.com praised as "a feast for the senses" that "deserves a look by anyone interested in seeing how far the film medium can go." "Souvenir" played the inaugural Maryland Film Festival in 1999; 12 years later, his short film "Tribeca," an early chronicle of the post-punk band A Certain Ratio, was screened at the festival."

@tie32101 That was American singer Martha Tilson who briefly joined ACR in 1982. She was "discovered" by the band while they were touring the East Coast.

@zombiekicker You're exactly right about that. They did. The film "24 Hour Party People" makes it clear that within the Factory Records circle (I hesitate to say offices), ACR was considered the equivalent of the Gang that Couldn't Shoot Straight. It's a shame. Perhaps if they'd been supported when they needed it most, the band wouldn't have been encouraged to pursue the darker, grittier, edgier sound they demonstrated so well here.

good description: the blackest white funk;), I've been just discovering them - amazing, I'd never thought so much had been already said and played in music, they're so modern, so contemporary...

Beautiful synergy. I learnt to move beyond whiteness thanks to ACR and 23 Skidoo, amongst others. Indie was a very white age in the 8Ties! 🐼

I think Martin Hannett mixed the sound at this gig, giving it his own unique flavour.
