Note: If you get bored, at the end of all my videos there is a sort of tl;dr or review that is useful if you're just passing by or have a test coming up, etc.

This is by far the best presentation that I have watched on this subject: concise, coherent, cause and effect..., all in clean-cut, no redundancy at all. Thank you!

Glad to hear it! I designed these to fill that dearth. I've been very busy unfortunately (full-time student and then some) and that seems unlikely to change for the immediate future, so I can't say for sure. Though I do have access to better software now. My e-mail is a.siegal@columbia.edu

Avignon was much closer to Rome than Paris in the 13th & 14th centuries. It was in the Kingdom of Arles which was growing weaker and smaller at this time but Avignon belonged to the Kingdom of Naples and the immediate surroundings, the Comtat Venaissin, was part of the Papal States since 1274. Charles II, King of Naples, owned Avignon when the Curia first took up residence. It was Joanna I, Queen of Naples, who sold Avignon to the Papacy in 1346. The city was combined with the Comtat and the area remained under Papal authority until 1791.

Avignon and Rome both look like amazing places, as does Piza, all three look worthy as the center of Catholicism to me! I hope to see them all one day. The Schisms certainly have always kept me cynical of Catholicism but I feel like there's something deep within my birth faith past all the political drama.

Yes - - sometimes it is hard to "keep the faith" when you realize that many imperfect people have had authority over religion. God has a perfect plan and allows imperfect people to be a part of His perfect plan. Adam and Eve were imperfect, and the Jews were imperfect. The Catholic Church is just another chapter of God using imperfect people as part of His perfect plan. Now there is a new chapter - imperfect Protestant Leaders as a part of His perfect plan. The best thing to do is focus on The Perfect Man - Jesus. Jesus was, is, and always be the Perfect Man - Perfectly Man AND Perfectly God. Pray his prayer every day: DEAR JESUS YOU KNEW I COULD NEVER DO ENOUGH GOOD THINGS TO DESERVE HEAVEN SO YOU SAID "YES" TO DEATH ON A CROSS SO THAT I CAN BE FORGIVEN. PLEASE SEND THE HOLY SPIRIT TO HELP ME BECOME MORE LIKE THE PERSON YOU WANT ME TO BE. AMEN.

This was great. We're playtesting a diplomacy/strategy game with some heavy RP elements and I am restoring the Avignon papacy in the late 1800s while Rome is under French rule. This was a great backgrounder.

Question: Why did the Papacy move to Avignon out of Rome, other than that Rome is a bad, dirty city?

The problem was not the church. The problem was the Kings and Queens who wanted to reign freely.

4:42"Rome is kind of a terrible city at this point in history, it's chaotic, nasty, not what you think of it today" Hmm I've been to Rome quite a few times already, mostly outside of the touristic spots and "chaotic and nasty" describe it pretty well even today hehe

Please check for accuracy. For a start, the real John XXIII, was Roncalli who started Vatican II, and is a canonised saint. +

I thought that you, or someone, must have lost count of Popes John.... but I didn't know there was even such a thing as an antipope, or that it would take another 550 years before another pope would dare to assume the name of John XXIII. Which leads me to wonder.... if they had been alive at the same time, and actually met face to face, would Pope John XXIII and Antipope John XXIII annihilate one another?

Actually during the Schism almost all european countries (except Portugal and Holy Roman Empire) choose whitch Pope was legit on the basis of politics and rivalries of the time -as is clearly shown in 9:31. For instance an englishman believed that the one in Rome is legit while a frenchman believed that the one in Avignion is legit. And of course all believed that the supporters of the other Pope are going to hell. And sure a frenchman believed that the englishman is going to hell and vice versa, as the 100 Yeras War has already begun.
