    Thank you, Ido. Weights are not the enemy of weightlifting but the gift, basis, and opportunity for lifting itself. Meaninglessness is not the enemy of meaning but the gift and opportunity for the one who means through movement. It reminds me of your speech about the moment, the divine spark of acting in the moment-- we have so many excuses "Oh I am tired," "Oh this is pointless" "Oh where is the meaning" "Oh, oh, oh"-- we miss the opening for discovering meaning between us and the meaningless. Philosophically, this is very much the point of Schelling on freedom.

    I think I understand. Goals make us focus on destinations. Simple things put the focus on ones' self. On the journey. Being present. The process of being alive.

    100%, you got it. We become so involved that everything we do becomes so steeped in meaning that we have to escape it. We need the pendulum to swing, and sometimes we have to swing it ourselves towards meaningless. Ultimately we find meaning again. What was obstructing the way, becomes the way

    what may be meaningless to some may not be meaningless to others. beginnings and endings are great when you can go forward and backwards to learn again. A continuous circle is a way of balance. (while sitting at my desk reading and stretching my fingers because it feels right in the moment.) Thank you for your time Ido

    For about 7 years I have been on a crusade to do as much nothing as humanly possible. I decided to do this after doing volunteer work for 2 charities. I can successfully argue that these charities do as much to cause the problems they claim to be trying to help as the stated causes by the experts. So I stopped. I shall continue to keep stopping.

    I'm all for this, but it is harder than it seems. By directing intention to the meaningless, the pursuit of the meaningless may became another form of meaning seeking. It feels similar to the challenges of living out Daoist teachings. My own example is telling myself to stop over thinking things, or stop going so deep into philosophizing. But, i fall into the trap of over thinking my over thinking, or realizing that my urge to stop philosophizing is itself a philosophy. Truly letting go is difficult in the conditioning and comfort of modernity.

    Meaningful is existing and well understood hence not innovating. We have so many subconscious actions those are just building blocks of something constructive but if they are not queued together to form a pattern then they stay stale in our consciousness but active in our subconciousness, it's okay to play around with those building blocks meaninglessly but with a hope that they will resonate along with your wish and form something constructive to you meaningful and hence meaningful for others who surround you.

    I think the real challenge is to not find any meaning in anything we do. You can example try to draw perfect circles on a paper and all of a sudden you found some meaning and fulfillment in the activity of doing seemingly boring and repetetive motions. The only limitation is your mind basically. I think self awareness often kills the art.

    So... any goal you set in advance is a function of your current understanding and awareness. To expand you awareness and understanding then you need to get lost, to allow the suggestions of your body and environment to influence or choose your direction of enquiry. In general this tends to deliver your conscious goals more efficiently than any plan you might envision in advance of exploration. Why is this relevant ? Well a lot of people are busy getting injured with callisthenics right now, the advice on youtube is rather efficient in achieving this goal..... The reason they get injured is that they believe that they must follow advice and demand that their body confrom to that advice. If you listen to your body and follow it's advice and suggestions then you really can't go wrong. Evidence ? EVERY LIVING CREATURE SAVE DOGS AND HUMANS MOVES WITH TREMENDOUS FREEDOM AND EFFICIENCY.

    I think being present is pragmatic to the self, and by extention my connection to everything and everyone around me If the "meaningful" stuff leads me to veer too far off from being present, then i'm all for the meaningless stuff -- otherwise i feel like my thoughts and actions are drunk, and at risk of sinking deeper into that If it leads to being present i'm all for it

    What’s meaningless to one person could be meaningful to someone else, there’s nothing wrong with that, as long as doing it actually and truly makes you happy. I’m lazy AF, and I am proud of it 😂. I engage in climbing my rooftop at night and look at the stars for hours, I go look for bugs in my backyard when it rains, pay attention to the tiny worlds created wherever water flows, filling my bathtub with water and just sit there enjoying the movement of it on my skin until my hands get wrinkled 😂. I hate shopping, I hate working, i hate paying bills, I hate this adult life so I just try to be a kid on my days off.

    We give things meaning. It doesn’t exist without us making it up. We are the universe recognizing itself. So, find meaning in those things that bring you joy and express your love. Then you’ll no longer need to search for meaning in this world.

    I think this is a reaction to people calling his movement training "worthless". Look, there are TONS of things an athlete will do that, if taken in a vacuum, will seem worthless, to other athletes from that same sport. As for something to have "value" that is deeply subjective, many people I know look at MMA training (for example) as worthless, because you are spending $1,000 a year, getting injured, and not having fun.

    Quite paradoxical, but doesn't the act of turning something into a practice immediately endow that act with meaning? I do meaningless things because... I want to endow myself with meaning, as Ido said, ... [or whatever your reason is]. The problem is that the average present-day mind is trained from the onset to figure out and be aware of what role its actions play in the grand scheme of things. I would even content that humans are predisposed by design to do that. Therefore, the true meaningless practice would be any act that doesn't fall under the conceptual framework of a practice. Embracing the chaos between practices.

  • @formyeve

    @formyeve

    Which is kind of badass, because even if the most meaningless things we do - things that on the surface look like utter chaos - have meaning as a result of us making it into a practice of sorts... everything we do suddenly has meaning. We in effect, become *meaning*.

    If doing "meaningless stuff" brings meaning to the person itself then is not meaningless and what you are presenting isnt actually a case for meaningless stuff, because the establisment of the dichotomy meaning/meaningless collapses under your own definition

    That’s a very interesting thought trap you’ve found yourself in. It’s a paradox. The first part is true, but the second part is not. What you’re describing, is holiness. Some call it the presence of God. It’s the same idea, that all of mother Theresa’s acts so good for humanity, because she does them for her self, not for them. If she did for them, it would not be of benefit. There’s a wonderful story about this in the book, big magic, where dancers in Bali were made to perform traditional dances, and when they became too Indicative of their spirituality, they were made to make up newer lighter dances, which ultimately turned into wholly dances. It’s inescapable
